    FT: Chelsea 1-3 Real Madrid

It was all about Karim Benzema to be honest. Absolutely world class. He showed everyone watching what a world-class striker he is.

His movement, his finishing, what he brings to this Real Madrid team, it was just breath-taking to watch him at times.

In the first half, Real Madrid were far better tactically and I thought Carlo Ancelotti got one over Thomas Tuchel which is very, very rare and they just took their moments - two fantastic headers from Benzema.

To be fair Chelsea got themselves back in it with Kai Havertz's goal but one minute into the second half, a huge mistake from Mendy - and it's a massive mountain to climb.

All the reaction to both upsets - I think we can call them that?! - in the Champions League tonight to come, get ready for a few "it's just half-time in the tie..." quotes.

All over! What a win for Villarreal but it is one they have absolutely deserved.

Bayern will fancy their chances of overturning things in the second leg but they will need a BIG improvement in performance.

You are thinking it has to be a goal and it's literally just inches over.

    Courtois is thinking thank goodness.

    Oooh, chance for Hakim Ziyech!

It's a nice touch and lay off from Romelu Lukaku with his back to goal, and Ziyech stings a snap-shot over the crossbar on the bounce.

Kai Havertz and Nacho clash heads when going up for the ball and both are down and needing some treatment. Both seem to be OK.

Gareth Bale flicks the ball up and boots clear on the turn, more defending than attacking for the Welshman in these final few minutes.

    Villarreal 1-0 Bayern Munich

Huge chance to get a second for Villarreal as a great move ends with Alfonso Pedraza firing wide when it was perhaps easier to score.

Villarreal could have won this by three or four goals!

What a performance from Benzema, he's just been outstanding, coming deep, running in behind - before we even mention the hat-trick.

The goals were all brilliant too - the two headers, I still can't decide which one was better. He's been an absolute class act in everything he has done tonight.

The Real Madrid fans give Karim Benzema a standing ovation, not a bad night for the Frenchman.

He's the first player to score hat-tricks in successive Champions League knockout ties since Cristiano Ronaldo did so for Real against Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid in 2017.

Decent hit from Reece James and it is met with a good save from Thibaut Courtois. Again Chelsea are reduced to having to try their luck from outside the box, though.

Good feet from Mason Mount as he gets in down the left of the penalty area, but there are too many white shirts between him and the goal and his effort is blocked.

Cheers from the Real Madrid fans as they knock the ball around nicely, but the visitors are unwilling to overcommit late in the game.

Kai Havertz has been good tonight and tests Thibaut Courtois from distance, but it's comfortable for the former Blues stopper.
