Kevin de Bruyne puts the ball in with no second thought but there was nobody there to get on the end of it. It's a really clever ball in.

    Man City 2-1 Real Madrid

Kevin de Bruyne plays a peach of a low ball into the corridor of uncertainty. Gabriel Jesus and Phil Foden are in the box but the ball rolls too far in front of them.

If it stays this way, City are going to reflect ruefully on these chances.

Riyad Mahrez takes the ball off Eder Militao. He just has the keeper to beat and it's another huge opportunity missed by Manchester City. That should be in the back of the net again.

    How is it not 3-0?!

City get away as Riyad Mahrez nicks the ball past Eder Militao. He is in on goal and beats Thibaut Courtois but hits the far post.

Phil Foden looks certain to finish, but his first-time follow-up is blocked near the line by Dani Carvajal.

Alaba was a doubt ahead of this game after tweaking his hamstring at the weekend.

Nacho is going to need to be on it from the off.

  8. 'City wasted some chances'published at 21:03 British Summer Time 26 April 2022

HT: Man City 2-1 Real Madrid

Ex-England midfielder Steve McManaman, who won the Champions League with Real Madrid twice and also played for Manchester City, speaking on BT Sport, said: "City at 2-0 up you thought they were going to go on but they wasted some chances and Madrid started to get back into the game.

"The goal came out of nothing but Real have the best centre-forward around in Karim Benzema."

For a top-class striker, you just need one opportunity and that is all Karim Benzema has had. He tucks it away so calmly.

HT: Man City 2-1 Real Madrid

Benzema has now scored 40 goals in 41 matches for Real Madrid in all competitions this season.

He is the fourth player to score at least 13 Champions League goals in a single campaign, after Cristiano Ronaldo (17 in 2013/14, 16 in 2015/16 and 15 in 2017/18), Robert Lewandowski (15 in 2019/20,13 in 2021/22) and Lionel Messi (14 in 2011/12).

  11. Postpublished at 20:58 British Summer Time 26 April 2022

HT: Man City 2-1 Real Madrid

Karim Benzema has joined Robert Lewandowski (both 13 goals) as the leading goalscorers in this season's Champions League.

This is his eighth goal in this season's knockout phase. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (10 in 2016/17, 8 in 2013/14) and Lionel Messi (8 in 2011/12) have netted as many CL knockout phase goals in a single campaign as Benzema in 2021/22 (8).

Best striker in the world right now? Don't think anyone can touch him at the moment.

  12. 'City have identified weakness'published at 20:57 British Summer Time 26 April 2022

HT: Man City 2-1 Real Madrid

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

City have obviously identified a weakness in the Real Madrid side that they don't like defending crosses. Don't be surprised to see more balls go into the box in the second half from Manchester City.

    Man City 2-1 Real Madrid

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Etihad Stadium

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will settle for that given the way Manchester City over-ran his side for most of that half. Riyad Mahrez might want to sit a bit away from Pep Guardiola in the dressing room. The manager was in a full-on rage when he shot instead of playing in the unmarked Phil Foden with the score 2-0.

  16. 'It's been relentless'published at 20:51 British Summer Time 26 April 2022

HT: Man City 2-1 Real Madrid

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's been relentless from end-to-end. Real Madrid couldn't get the ball off Manchester City for the first 20 minutes and were punished for it. It was inevitable with the quality Real Madrid have up front with Karim Benzema they would get back in. Pep Guardiola will be so angry they didn't take those chances. But it's been an incredible game. It's been fantastic.

  17. HALF-TIMEpublished at 45+1 mins

    Man City 2-1 Real Madrid

    What a half!

City absolutely belted out of the blocks to lead 2-0 in no time.

But as PSG and Chelsea know and City have found out, this Real side are very tough to shake off.

    Chance!

Fernandinho nips in to win the ball and set up Riyad Mahrez. His low ball is into the corridor between defenders and keeper but hacked away by a Real defender.

Another City free-kick. For a trip on Gabriel Jesus.

This is even better placed, near the left corner of the box.

    Surely Kevin de Bruyne territory.
