If it stays this way, City are going to reflect ruefully on these chances.

For a top-class striker, you just need one opportunity and that is all Karim Benzema has had. He tucks it away so calmly.

Benzema has now scored 40 goals in 41 matches for Real Madrid in all competitions this season.

He is the fourth player to score at least 13 Champions League goals in a single campaign, after Cristiano Ronaldo (17 in 2013/14, 16 in 2015/16 and 15 in 2017/18), Robert Lewandowski (15 in 2019/20,13 in 2021/22) and Lionel Messi (14 in 2011/12).

Karim Benzema has joined Robert Lewandowski (both 13 goals) as the leading goalscorers in this season's Champions League.

This is his eighth goal in this season's knockout phase. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (10 in 2016/17, 8 in 2013/14) and Lionel Messi (8 in 2011/12) have netted as many CL knockout phase goals in a single campaign as Benzema in 2021/22 (8).

Best striker in the world right now? Don't think anyone can touch him at the moment.

City have obviously identified a weakness in the Real Madrid side that they don't like defending crosses. Don't be surprised to see more balls go into the box in the second half from Manchester City.

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will settle for that given the way Manchester City over-ran his side for most of that half. Riyad Mahrez might want to sit a bit away from Pep Guardiola in the dressing room. The manager was in a full-on rage when he shot instead of playing in the unmarked Phil Foden with the score 2-0.

It's been relentless from end-to-end. Real Madrid couldn't get the ball off Manchester City for the first 20 minutes and were punished for it. It was inevitable with the quality Real Madrid have up front with Karim Benzema they would get back in. Pep Guardiola will be so angry they didn't take those chances. But it's been an incredible game. It's been fantastic.

What a half!

City absolutely belted out of the blocks to lead 2-0 in no time.

But as PSG and Chelsea know and City have found out, this Real side are very tough to shake off.
