  4. Elsewhere...published at 18:45 British Summer Time 24 August 2021

There's more games than you can shake a stick at tonight - with 14 not involving Premier League sides.

QPR face Oxford in a repeat of the 1986 Milk Cup final, while Sheffield United (one point from four games in the Championship) look to put their league problems behind them as they host Wayne Rooney's Derby County™.

Fulham, unbeaten Championship leaders, go to Birmingham City.

Wigan v Bolton is a local derby of sorts between League One rivals in decent form.

  5. Murphy back at Elland Roadpublished at 18:42 British Summer Time 24 August 2021

    Leeds v Crewe (19:45 BST)

    Luke MurphyImage source, Getty Images

Crewe haven't had the best start to the season. They currently sit 22nd in League One, following up an opening-day draw with three straight defeats. The latest of these was a 1-0 home to loss to Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

Tonight's game will see Crewe skipper Luke Murphy return to the club that parted with £1m to sign him from Alex in the summer of 2013.

He made 111 appearances for the Whites, scoring seven times, including on his debut before having spells at Burton and Bolton.

He and his team-mates will be in for a raucous atmosphere, with Leeds having sold all tickets for the game. So expect 36,000+ inside Elland Road.

  6. Whose unbeaten start will end?published at 18:39 British Summer Time 24 August 2021

    Cardiff v Brighton (19:45 BST)

Both these sides have had unbeaten starts to the season, with Brighton on two wins from two in the Premier League.

Championship side Cardiff are on eight points from four games - and beatn Sutton in the first round of the cup.

Brighton boss Graham Potter, who used to manage Cardiff's rivals Swansea, is likely to make changes.

He said: "Mick McCarthy has done a good job at Cardiff, he's a very experienced manager. They play to their strengths well and they have got some dangerous players."

Bluebirds centre-back Aden Flint has scored four goals in his past two games.

  8. Much-changed Villa target smooth ridepublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 24 August 2021

Barrow v Aston Villa (19:45 BST)

There was, of course, one very noteworthy departure from Aston Villa in the summer with captain Jack Grealish departing for Manchester City for £100m.

The Villans used the money to strengthen across their forward options and will hope to build on last season's 11th-placed finish in the Premier League.

It's likely that they could in fact name an entirely different XI for tonight's game in Cumbria to the one that started Saturday's 2-0 win over Newcastle.

Brazil international Wesley could make his long-awaited first start since January 2020 and talented youngsters Carney Chukwuemeka and Jaden Philogene-Bidace are both in line to start the first match of their professional careers.

Villa reached the final of this competition in 2020 and, with no silverware won since 1996, their fans will hope that however changes they do make for tonight's game it still leaves them with enough to get through to the third round.

  9. Forshaw fit againpublished at 18:33 British Summer Time 24 August 2021

    Leeds v Crewe (19:45 BST)

    Adam ForshawImage source, Getty Images

Tonight represents a good chance for Leeds to get a first win of the season on the board. It also gives Marcelo Bielsa the chance to test out a few younger players and give some of those who've spent time on the bench so far a run out.

Top amongst those will be midfielder Adam Forshaw, who has spent two years out with persistent injury problems, mainly to do with his hip. His last first-team game was against Charlton in the Championship on 28 September 2019.

Leeds have played Crewe once before in cup competitions. This was back in 1994 in the FA Cup, when United were a Premier League team. They beat Alex 3-1 thanks to two goals from Jamie Forrester and one from Brian Deane. Since then they've met eight times, Leeds winning four, Crewe two.

  10. Rose set for Watford debutpublished at 18:30 British Summer Time 24 August 2021

Watford v Crystal Palace (19:45 BST)

Danny Rose is likely to make his Watford debut today - over a year after his last game of senior football.

The 31-year-old did not feature for Spurs in his final season at the club - and last played for Newcastle in July 2020.

“He is ready, and I will say that he has worked really hard this pre-season,” Watford boss Xisco Munoz said.

“I can say congratulations, because I know what he has given in the last eight weeks. I wish him all the best on Tuesday and he will for sure play and he will give a good level for us."

  11. Rafa to shuffle his pack?published at 18:26 British Summer Time 24 August 2021

    Huddersfield v Everton (19:45 BST)

    Rafa BenitezImage source, Getty Images

Everton boss Rafa Benitez insists he will name the strongest side available to him for tonight's trip to Huddersfield, and will no doubt hope the weather is better than the Toffees' last visit to the John Smith's Stadium...

That was a snowy, midweek January evening two years ago, when Everton won 1-0 as the Terriers continued their plunge towards the Championship.

"I would like to go through,” said Benitez. “I would like to play a strong team and compete and go through.

"Yes, I would like to do that. Can I do it? We will have to wait, because we have to see if we have any knocks, injuries or any problems."

  12. Vieira planning to put out strongest sidepublished at 18:24 British Summer Time 24 August 2021

Watford v Crystal Palace (19:45 BST)

    Patrick VieiraImage source, Getty Images

Patrick Vieira is planning to name a strong Crystal Palace team against Watford for his debut as a Carabao Cup manager.

Palace are yet to win or score since Vieira replaced Roy Hodgson in the summer.

"I see that it is important for us to win football matches because it will give us confidence for the rest of the season," Vieira said.

"We are at the beginning of the season, players are feeling strong and feeling good. There are two games before the international break and we will play these two games with the best starting XI I have."

  13. Bees buzzingpublished at 18:21 British Summer Time 24 August 2021

Brentford v Forest Green (19:45 BST)

    Brentford fansImage source, Getty Images

If you'd offered Brentford four points from their opening two Premier League games I'm sure they would have snapped your hand off. Now, though, Thomas Frank's side turn their attention to the Carabao Cup, where they are one of the big fish looking to avoid a nasty surprise.

The Bees went on their best ever run in the competition last season by reaching the semi-finals before losing to eventual runners-up Tottenham. Their list of victims was impressive - Southampton, West Brom, Fulham and Newcastle.

  14. No red zone release for Premier League playerspublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 24 August 2021

There were reports that this might happen, but now it is official. Premier League clubs will not be releasing players for international matches in red zone countries next month.

This will apply to around 60 players, across 19 top-flight clubs.

The players would have had to quarantine on their return.

  15. Bluebirds hope to be on song on big nightpublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 24 August 2021

Barrow v Aston Villa (19:45 BST)

    Holker StreetImage source, Rex Features

There's no doubt about the hottest ticket in town in Barrow this evening.

The Bluebirds sold out all 5,400 tickets for the game at Holker Street yesterday.

The Cumbrian side won promotion back to the EFL in 2020 but, with last season having been played almost entirely behind closed doors, tonight will no doubt see fans in a celebratory mood pre-game.

How long that feeling lasts for is hard to say but with the Premier League side likely to field a much-changed XI could Mark Cooper's men spring a surprise on their big night?

  20. Cherries eye EFL repeatpublished at 18:09 British Summer Time 24 August 2021

    Norwich v Bournemouth (19:00 BST)

    Scott ParkerImage source, Getty Images

Bournemouth opened their campaign with a 5-0 win over MK Dons in this competition in July and Scott Parker has since navigated his side through an unbeaten start to the Championship season.

The Cherries sit seventh after four games, following two wins and two draws and have scored exactly two goals in each of those league games so far - so travelling supporters will be hoping for value for money again this evening.

Bournemouth have previous against their upcoming opposition in this competition, seeing off Norwich en route to the quarter-finals in the 2018-19 season.
