There were loud boos from the home fans all around us here as Martin Atkinson made his way down the tunnel - they’re absolutely fuming about his decision to disallow Timo Werner’s goal for a soft looking foul. Thomas Tuchel looked furious as well having been booked for his reaction to the decision.

Everton

Everton manager Rafa Benitez, speaking to BT Sport: "I am really pleased, to come here and perform in the way we did, we were really close. You have to be really proud of the players.

"We were doing well, it’s a pity we conceded as we were working really hard. In the second half we reacted well and had chances to win the game.

"Andros is doing well, but the team has won, not just one player doing well, and he was fantastic. The rest of the team worked hard with a fantastic performance.

"Mentally it's like a victory, with the players we had who were not playing."

Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, speaking to BT Sport

On the match itself: "Part of it was really good, we started well and scored a fantastic goal. In the second half we lacked a cutting edge to get a second. From our corner we concede five seconds later, which is too much to have.

"We had enough players behind the ball, but did not deal with things. We didn’t regroup and reorganise well enough.

"We gave them a few counter attacks, they didn’t play through us, and it was the same last Wednesday. We need to be better at when to risk it. They created big chances on the breaks."

On Martial: "Anthony did well, he could have had one or two more, and it was a very good goal how we switched it. We didn’t concede many chances today but we conceded a goal. We had moments where we had to deal with them but we didn’t. You can work all day on systems and defending, but you have to deal with it there and then."

Everton

Everton goalscorer Andros Townsend speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I am loving my football at the minute, I am so happy to have the opportunity to play for Everton, to contribute and to score goals.

"I have said many times in the past, I should be scoring goals on a more consistent basis, for one reason or another I have never really done it over the course of a season. It has been a good start I have scored five goals, I am capable of so much more.

"I have to keep going, keep working hard, keep listening to the manager and hopefully I can hit double figures."

It is 0-0 at the break but the lack of goals is not for the want of trying. Both sides have had opportunities although the home side have had the better of them as well as a couple of penalty shouts waved away. Referee Kevin Friend is certainly not making many friends in Lancashire at the moment. He was booed as he left the pitch at half time.

Wolves fail to build on their lead - and are punished. Newcastle will be the happier of the two teams.
