  1. Swansea target Southampton's Obafemipublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Dafydd Pritchard
    BBC Sport Wales

Swansea City are targeting Southampton striker Michael Obafemi on a permanent transfer.

The Swans had been interested in signing the 21-year-old Republic of Ireland international in January.

Obafemi's contract expires at the end of this season so could be available for a reduced fee.

  2. 'A successful two-fold operation;published at 18:08 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    Aston Villa

David Michael, My Old Man Said podcast:

"The summer transfer window has been a successful two-fold operation for Aston Villa. Firstly, in providing Villa with a squad that has a legitimate chance in qualifying for Europe, while also doing a PR damage limitation job in regards of the departing Jack Grealish.

"The arrival of Danny Ings, on top of other big spending on Emi Buendia and Leon Bailey, certainly dispelled a lot of concerns.

"Villa fans have been hoping there would be an upgrade in central midfield, but with Morgan Sanson bought a transfer window in advance, John McGinn made vice-captain and a 23-year-old Douglas Luiz still developing, it was perhaps unrealistic.

"The Grealish money has been spent and both Dean Smith and Villa CEO Christian Purslow have repeatedly declared, there would be no more major signings coming in this window. So, it’s likely to be a quiet deadline day.

"A back-up experienced keeper would be useful. Younger players may be seeking loan moves, although with Villa’s recent luck with Covid, squad depth could be key."

  9. 'It is every kid’s dream' - Bamfordpublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 31 August 2021

    England

More from Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford on his England call-up:

“I arrived super early. I had a chat with him [Gareth] Southgate. He said I was unlucky last year I just missed out but he was really happy for me to be there. You can tell with the atmosphere and culture he has built. You can see the togetherness already so it has been easy to settle in.

“He’s [Marcelo Bielsa] has not said too much to me. He wanted to keep me level headed and working hard. After the game at the weekend he came over and congratulated my parents.

“He has improved me no end and that goes for the whole squad. There were areas I’d never thought about. There were certain aspects of my game I had never noticed needing improving, he is very meticulous with detail and always wants you to improve."

On similarities to Harry Kane: “I’ve not modelled my game on Harry {Kane]. For me he is the best striker in the world but there are certain aspects I obviously look at and see I can improve."

On possibly making his England debut: “It is every kid’s dream. It is very cliched to say that every kid dreams of growing up playing for England. It is something I have dreamed about from being very young.

"It has always been an ambition and it was a goal I set myself for this season. Now I have to try and take the opportunity."

Chelsea are having a late attempt to sign Atletico Madrid midfield Saul Niguez.

The Blues had thought there was little chance of completing a deal for the Spain international.

However, the impasse between the parties has been broken and now there is a confidence that a transfer can be concluded, probably on loan.

The 26-year-old made 33 appearances last season as Madrid won La Liga.

    BBC Sport

Ainsley Maitland-Niles will stay at Arsenal following clear-the-air talks with manager Mikel Arteta.

The England international thought he was going to join Everton on loan before the transfer window closed.

However, Arsenal refused to sanction the move which triggered a social media post from Maitland-Niles, saying ‘he just wanted to play’.

It is understood the 24-year-old spoke to Arteta about his frustrations on Tuesday afternoon.

The talks went well and Maitland-Niles will now remain at Arsenal.

He has made two appearances for the club this season, coming on as a substitute in Saturday’s 5-0 defeat at Manchester City.
