  3. More from Gerrard...published at 22:23 British Summer Time 16 September 2021

    FT: Rangers 0-2 Lyon

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard on BT Sport: "We only feel the pressure and demands we put on ourselves, we’re well aware of what the staff and the club demand.

"We expected them to have a few moments in the game and we knew we had to try and push their inverted wingers wide.

"There’s no criticism of the players today and this week’s too important to dwell on this result.

"I don’t think we’ve hit top gear yet, I’ll openly admit that. We’ve had to deal with certain things but I’m not going to use any excuses.

"We can still get out of the group; Lyon came out of Pot 1 and are a good team, but I don’t think there was much of a gap in the teams today."

  4. 'Scoreline slightly harsh' - Gerrardpublished at 22:19 British Summer Time 16 September 2021

    FT: Rangers 0-2 Lyon

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard on BT Sport: "I think we gave a lot to the game, I don’t want to be too critical because for large parts of the game we competed.

"We created some decent moments without them being clear-cut. I think the scoreline is slightly harsh on us. We made two mistakes for their goals.

"Not to be too harsh, at the domestic level, you can sometimes give the ball away in certain areas but not at this level in the Europa League."

Lots of goals conceded for the Scottish sides tonight which is disappointing. Rangers with home advantage would have settled for a draw to avoid the defeat but in the end, it was a comprehensive defeat. Celtic conceding four away from home, they have a problem keeping the ball out of their net.

  7. Lyon enjoy left flankpublished at 22:11 British Summer Time 16 September 2021

    FT: Rangers 0-2 Lyon

Lyon had joy down Rangers' left-hand side today. Borna Barisic was caught out a few times. Karl Toko Ekambi made them pay for it in the first half.

Rangers were exceptional last season. But they had to face very little adversity so it will be interesting to see how this group cope. It's a short turnaround and they have to come back and go again. People say that winning a title is difficult, but retaining it can be even more difficult.

Lyon showed why they're the number one seed, a class act. They had important players missing and they still put in that performance. Steven [Gerrard] will be disappointed. A lot of effort from Rangers but very few efforts on target. You expect a lot more than that, Morelos was very quiet too.

It finished Brondby 0-0 Sparta Prague in the other group game.

On paper, Rangers should beat those sides. But second in the group doesn't get you a last-16 place. Instead, it's a meeting with a third-place side from the Champions League groups.

  12. FULL-TIME - Rangers 0-2 Lyonpublished at 21:53 British Summer Time 16 September 2021

All over. A classy Lyon side inflict Rangers' first group-stage defeat since October 2019.

They were just too good. Karl Toko Ekambi's stunner got them up and running in the first half, and James Tavernier's own goal made it 2-0.

From there, the French side saw it out pretty comfortably.

Lopes hasn't really had anything to do tonight. Rangers have struggled to fashion their good moments into real chances. Lyon look content now.

    Rangers 0-2 Lyon

Leon Balogun has been clattered by Sinaly Diomande as the pair challenged for a header.

No penalty, though. They both launch themselves into the air and come together.

Good delivery from James Tavernier, a better leap from Leon Balogun but his header grazes the top of the net.

Fashion Sakala balloons the ball into the stands from 40 yards. Not ideal.

Alfredo Morelos does better by drawing a foul from Emerson out on the right. A good chance to stick the ball in the box here.

    Rangers 0-2 Lyon

Scott Wright and Hassem Aouar are having a right ding-dong. They keep fouling each other.

Wright nudges the Frenchman over right in front of the referee. Lyon's midfield have been too good.

    Rangers 0-2 Lyon

Connor Goldson gets something on the corner, but Lyon clear.

Manager Peter Bosz has got his tactics spot on tonight. His teams usually love a goal-fest too...

Hassem Aouar goes in late on Scott Wright. Probably should have been a yellow card.
