Another splitting pass. The full-backs get dragged in the middle which leaves a overlap. A couple of errors and watched the goalkeeper make a mistake. She was never going to miss.

This is in danger of getting very messy, very quickly for Italy.

Their full-backs seem to be really struggling to keep up the pace with France's attackers and there's no surprise to see Marie-Antoinette Katoto on the scoresheet already.

The latest goal, a predatory strike, takes her international tally to 26 goals in 31 games.

Another poorly dealt-with cross gives France an easy goal.

Sakina Karchaoui runs down the left and puts in a low cross which takes a deflection and then the keeper palms it straight to Marie-Antoinette Katoto, who isn't missing from six yards.

Let's be honest, there was no way this was staying goalless after such a frenzied start.

Both sides have been very open at the back but France have created the most opportunities and they take the lead, Grace Geyoro running over to the pocket of fans in the corner to celebrate.

First goal and I very much doubt the last we will see tonight.

Not looking entirely comfortable at the back this early for Italy. Too easy for France to get through them. Not enough bodies as options.

And then out of nowhere Italy should score!

The ball breaks for Barbara Bonansea on the edge of the box and she shoots. Goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin has gone the wrong way but she sticks out her boot to keep the shot out.

    Breathless start.

I don't think hearing these two national anthems being belted out inside a stadium will ever not be enjoyable.

A decent crowd here, not quite capacity but the enclosed stadium makes for a good atmosphere.

There can't be many players with eight Champions League trophies, 15 league titles and more than 130 international caps who have played in Rotherham - let alone playing three group-stage games of a major international tournament there.

But that is exactly what will happen when France's Wendie Renard - one of the most decorated players in women's club football - captains Les Bleues in their opening Euro 2022 match against Italy at Rotherham's New York Stadium on Sunday, which has a 10,400 capacity for the tournament.

Against the backdrop of a debate about the size and profile of some of the grounds chosen to host the Euros, Leigh Sports Village - which holds 7,800 for the showpiece - hosts defending champions the Netherlands, featuring superstars including Paris St-Germain's Lieke Martens and Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema.

However, 68,871 fans watched hosts England beat Austria 1-0 in Wednesday's opening game at Old Trafford, setting a new record for the European Women's Championship.

And with 500,000 tickets already sold for the tournament - more than double the amount for the Euros in 2017 - does it matter?

"The strength of the France team is in attack, with players such as Marie-Antoinette Katoto, Kadidiatou Diani, Delphine Cascarino, Sandy Baltimore and Melvine Malard, who are young and have great qualities.

"The defence, with Wendie Renard, Griedge Mbock Bathy, Selma Bacha - who all had a great season with Lyon - plus new Chelsea signing Eve Perisset, is also a strength.

"In contrast, I think that without Lyon's Amandine Henry, the midfield is weaker. It was not a surprise she was not selected because Corinne Diacre had not picked her since December 2020."

Syanie Dalmat, a journalist for French daily sport newspaper L'Equipe, assesses their chances.
