Iceland and Belgium were forced to settle for a point each after an entertaining Euro 2022 Group D encounter in front of a raucous crowd at Manchester City's Academy Stadium.

Berglind Thorvaldsdottir's second-half header had put Iceland on course for only their second win at a European Women's Championship.

But a penalty by Reading's Justine Vanhaevermaet, after Gunnhildur Jonsdottir's foul on Elena Dhont, ensured the sides ended level in what was the first match of the tournament for both.

At 0-0, Thorvaldsdottir had a penalty saved by Nicky Evrard after experienced defender Davina Philtjens had handled.

• Iceland have won one of their 11 matches at the Euros (drew two, lost eight).
• Belgium’s four total goals at the Euros have come in only two different minutes of play – they have scored in the 59th minute twice and the 67th minute twice.
• Iceland have only managed to win one of the four matches in which they have taken the lead at the Euros (drew one, lost two), beating the Netherlands in 2013 (1-0).
• Belgium have conceded a total of four goals at the Euros, with only one of those coming in open play (1x free-kick, 1x penalty, x1 corner).
• All five of Iceland’s goals at the Euros have been scored by different players, with Berglind Thorvaldsdottir the fifth different player to score for them in the competition. Only Switzerland have scored as many goals at the Euros without any player scoring more than once (also five).
• Belgium’s Nicky Evrard saved a penalty effort from Iceland’s Berglind Thorvaldsdottir in the first half. Excluding shootouts, there was only one penalty saved in the entirety of the 2017 edition of this tournament.

Riley James: I don’t know Iceland’s standing in women’s football, but they have fought and played excellent.

Alexandra Johannesdottir only came on in the 91st minute and in the 92nd minute she could, and should have, won it. She is free, unmarked and the ball is on her head, but she can't get a good contact and glances the header wide. What a chance for the substitute.

Iceland goalkeeper Sandra Sigurdardottir is the most relieved person in the Academy Stadium. She wipes out Belgium's Janice Cayman and referee Tess Olofsson points to the spot, but the assistant's flag comes to Iceland's rescue as Cayman is ruled offside when she collected the ball.

Iceland are wanting a penalty as it bounced up off the arm of Julie Blesmans, but her arms were close to her body and nothing is given.

It then fell to Karolina Lea Vilhjalmadottir who shot just wide.

Time running out. Any goal from now on could well be a winning one.

They've just announced the attendance - 3,859. It's the smallest crowd at Euro 2022 so far but it has sounded like 38,000 at times.

Both sets of fans have been brilliant. We've had two versions of the Viking clap, drums, singing and Belgium's fan band has not stopped playing all game.

The decision to use Manchester City's Academy Stadium as a venue for this tournament has provoked criticism.

But small is beautiful and the atmosphere has been off the scale.

Both teams are just lacking something in front of goal. When they move up a little bit, the last pass is loose.

Belgium substitute Hannah Eurlings, on for Elena Dhont, tries to make an instant impact, shooting on the turn from the edge of the penalty area, but she can't wrap her foot around the effort and it drifts wide for a goal kick.

Into the last ten minutes. Can either side grab a winning goal?

Belgium so close to taking the lead. Tessa Wullert, close to the top corner of the penalty area, tries to curl one past Sandra Sigurdardottir, but the Iceland number one does well to scamper across her line and palm it away.

Watch how Berglind Thorvaldsdottir made amends for missing a penalty in the first half as she headed home Karolina Lea Vilhjalmadottir's cross to give Iceland the lead against Belgium.

Iceland have made a change and it's Berglind Thorvaldsdottir, who missed a penalty then put Iceland ahead, who has gone off with Svana Gudmundsdottir the one coming on.

Fifteen minutes to be a hero.

It's been so much better in this second half and both sides will know the three points are there for the taking.

This time Iceland have a chance and Dagny Brynjarsdottir produces a looping header which is dipping under the crossbar before Nicky Evrard shows great athleticism to leap up and push it over the top.
