Summary

  • RESULT: Belgium 1-1 Iceland

  • Group D - France v Italy (20:00 BST)

  1. Postpublished at 10 mins

    Belgium 0-0 Iceland

The first chance of the game goes to Belgium and it's from a cross from the left, with Janice Cayman coming in at the back post.

Unfortunately for her she loses her balance under pressure and the ball bounces off her knees and Iceland goalkeeper Sandra Sigurdardottir can dive and deal with it.

  2. Postpublished at 7 mins

    Belgium 0-0 Iceland

It's been a bright start from Iceland, utilising both flanks well but the delivery into the box needs to be better as a couple of good positions have come to nothing.

  3. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Belgium 0-0 Iceland

A few early touches of the ball for Belgium goalkeeper Nicky Evrard, who has to launch the ball to safety a couple of times.

Gudrun Arnadottir, down the left wing for Iceland, looks a handful and a key outlet for them. Her team-mate Sveindis Jane Jonsdottir also gets a bit of space down the left and looks to cross into the middle, but there's too much on it and it drifts out of play.

It might be the smallest venue at Euro 2022 but what an atmosphere.

The noise was off the scale when the teams emerged from the tunnel into Manchester's baking heat.

Around 2,000 of the 4,400 fans inside the ground are from Iceland with Belgium having about 600 supporters cheering them on - the rest are neutrals.

Standby for water breaks. It's hot, hot, hot...

  6. Belgium aim to do better than last game in Englandpublished at 16:59 British Summer Time 10 July 2022

    Belgium v Iceland (17:00 BST)

Belgium finished top of their qualifying group, which also included Switzerland, Romania, Croatia and Lithuania and won seven and lost one of their eight matches.

They had no trouble finding the net, scoring 37 times and only conceding five with Tine de Caigny grabbing 12 goals (including five in a 6-0 win over Lithuania as she ended up the top scorer from any nation in qualifying.

However, their last match in England was not a happy one as they lost 3-0 to the Euro 2022 hosts in a warm-up game in Wolverhampton last month.

    Anita Asante
Former England defender on BBC One

I think Iceland have got consistent form at the moment. They will be coming in with a lot of confidence. As you can hear, the sound and atmosphere behind us is absolutely incredible.

Dagny Brynjarsdottir - I've played against her in the WSL over the past season. Her presence in midfield is always felt and it's about her intelligence too, including her timings into the box.

One of her biggest strengths is her heading ability and the opposition today in Belgium are going have to be glued in to her movement.

There will be fans on both sides of the Academy Stadium today, but no-one behind either of the goals as they are standing areas.

  10. 'The balance in the team is good'published at 16:52 British Summer Time 10 July 2022

    Belgium v Iceland (17:00 BST)

And here are some pre-match quotes from Iceland midfielder Sara Bjork Gunnarsdottir, who said: "The squad is calm. We have a lot of experienced players and the balance in the team is good. We have been able to control the excitement level really well."

Gunnarsdottir recently playing her first 90 minutes since giving birth in November and of that match said: "I felt pretty good. The first 75 minutes were solid, and then you got a bit tired which is understandable.

"The most important things is that I had a good and quick recovery, which says a lot for the future."

  11. Belgium boss Serneels calls for patiencepublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 10 July 2022

    Belgium v Iceland (17:00 BST)

Belgium coach Ives Serneels has said his side will need to be patient against Iceland in their Euro 2022 opener.

With tournament favourites France and Italy completing Group D, Belgium will know the importance of their first match, but Serneels does not believe today's match is a must-win fixture.

"This match is not decisive," he said. "Remember our first game against Denmark in 2017, we lost that and ended up staying in the race until the end."

Of today's opponents, he added: "Iceland are a tough team and a team that are always a united unit on the field. There are players with special qualities, but they are also the players that we have to be able to handle.

"I'm afraid we'll have to be patient."

  12. Another finals appearance for Icelandpublished at 16:46 British Summer Time 10 July 2022

    Belgium v Iceland (17:00 BST)

Iceland are 17th in the world, two places above Belgium, and this is their fourth appearance in a row at the Euro finals, reaching the quarter-finals in 2013, but going out in the group phase in 2009 and 2017.

They are also guaranteed at least a play-off place as they aim to qualify for next year's World Cup, which would be the first time they have done so.

  16. 'A great opportunity to qualify from Group D'published at 16:36 British Summer Time 10 July 2022

    Belgium v Iceland (17:00 BST)

    IcelandImage source, .

Mist Runarsdottir, founder of women's football podcast Heimavollurinn and a writer for Icelandic sport website fotbolti.net, assesses their chances this summer.

    How will Iceland do?

"Icelanders are positive going into the Euros and see a great opportunity to qualify from Group D. France are obviously the favourites but we believe we can do well against them, as well as against Belgium and Italy.

"Saying we expect to qualify would perhaps be a bit strong but we hope and really believe that we can.

"The form of the team has been very good. In the last year, Iceland have only lost two competitive games - against very strong teams in the Netherlands and United States.

"New and fresh players such as Karolina Lea Vilhjalmsdottir and Sveindis Jane Jonsdottir have made a huge impact."

That's Iceland's prime minister Katrin Jakobsdottir on the left having fun with supporters in the fan zone. She grew up watching English football games with her dad on television and is a Liverpool fan.

"Everybody in Iceland has a favourite team in England," Jakobsdottir tells me.

"I'm excited to be at Euro 2022. We have a great team."

She had to dash back to her hotel to change her top before kick-off because they do not allow team colours in the VIP area at Manchester City's Academy Stadium.
