I interviewed Netherlands boss Mark Parsons before the tournament. His road to international management began at Chelsea Reserves just over a decade ago and includes a very succcessful spell in the United States.

He said he did not expect his side to be ready to win the Euros at the beginning of the tournament, but is expecting them to grow with every game.

This is a make-or-break test of where the defending champions are at, and Parsons wants to create "goosebump" moments with his squad. Making it into the last four would go some way to achieving that.

I am so happy that Vivianne Miedema is back. She's surprised the team after breakfast with a negative Covid test.

I am not sure how fit she is because they waited until yesterday after the training to see if she could play or not. Hopefully she can play an hour or not and make a massive impact.

France keep stumbling at the quarter-final stage. There’s an older generation that wants this curse to end, but there’s a younger generation too - for a lot of them, this is new. It’s not their curse.

If they win tonight, they’ll have a quarter-final win ratio of 100%. This is very important for them.

We are so used to France setting the tournament alight in the group stages and never in the knockout stages. That's the problem with this France team.

Whenever we used to play against France in the tournament, this is the team that can go all the way but they haven't gone past that barrier.

  6. France looking to buck the trendpublished at 19:51 British Summer Time 23 July 2022

    France v Netherlands (20:00 BST)

This will be the second Women’s Euros match between France and Netherlands, with the first also coming at the quarter-final stage in 2009.

After a goalless draw, the Dutch went on to win that tie 5-4 on penalties.

France were also eliminated on penalties again by Denmark in 2013, and by England after a 0-1 loss in 2017.

They have also lost both of their previous Euros games against the defending champions, with both coming against Germany: a 0-3 defeat in 2005 and 1-5 loss in 2009, with Germany also going on to win both of those editions.

The issue for this French side - which is looking to reach the Euros semis for the first time - has rarely been one of talent, but more of their own making.

There were off-field distractions and controversies in the build-up to this tournament, prompting some to describe them as a "ticking time bomb" , externalthat will derail their attempt to win a major tournament for the first time.

Our very own Gary Rose wrote about some of this in a piece immediately after the victory over Belgium that confirmed their place in the last eight as winners of Group D.

This is a Netherlands team that is not probably playing up to the level that we expect as European champions.

But this France team have come into the tournament unknown, nobody spoke about them until the group stages. They have been a phenomenal and really exciting young team.

France versus the Netherlands in a big tournament quarter-final. Iconic blue meets resplendent orange. This game just has that authentic feel about it, a match-up fans of any vintage can relate to.

The printers work fast around here. This quarter-final was only confirmed six days ago but the stalls lining the road to Rotherham's New York Stadium are packed with half-and-half France and Netherlands scarves, flags and all sorts of colourful merch.

Vuvuzelas are also on the menu, with three young kids trudging into the ground in front of me asking their dad for one. "No cash," was his response. "I take card," the savvy salesman shouted after him. Foiled.
