Vivianne Miedema’s return is something a lot of people are getting really excited about. She’s a big game player, a big moment player, and she’s going to want to leave an impact on this tournament.

She’s a leader in terms of getting on the scoresheet, but also one of the players who’s going to be leading from the front in terms of her press and mentality. That’s something we haven’t seen from the Netherlands at this tournament.

MOTDx In The Making: How Arsenal's Vivianne Miedema became a football icon

Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema, 25, is the Netherlands' all-time top goalscorer and was part of the squad who won Euro 2017 and reached the 2019 World Cup final. She has won three domestic leagues titles - one with Arsenal and two with Bayern Munich. She is also the Women's Super League's record goalscorer and at 15, was the youngest player to debut in the Eredivisie.

    Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall:

"She has great game intelligence and great technique. What is also world class, but people don't necessarily see, is her physical ability.

"She's very explosive and strong. The combination of those make it very difficult for opponents to play against her."

    Vivianne Miedema is back!

After missing the group games with Portugal and Switzerland (both of which the Netherlands won), the Arsenal striker is fit and raring to go again.

With 94 goals in 112 international caps and more WSL goals than any other player in history, the importance of her return is self-explanatory, although the hurt over Martens' injury remains.

Netherlands defender Dominique Janssen told the BBC World Football podcast: "Everybody is upset about it [Martens' injury] but life goes on and we have to move forward.

"She went home. For her, it was the best thing to do and if I was in her situation, I totally understand why she left. She just needs to focus on her recovery now, not just the body but also the mind.

"She [Miedema] is definitely very happy to be out of her room again and we're also very happy to have her back on the pitch because she has very special qualities."

The Dutch a big blow earlier this week when forward Lieke Martens was ruled out for the rest of Euro 2022 because of a foot injury.

Martens, who scored three times and was named player of the tournament as the Dutch won Euro 2017, was injured in the 4-1 win over Switzerland.

The Netherlands had already been hit by the withdrawal from the squad of captain Sari van Veenendaal with a shoulder injury.

They were handed a bit of sugar to help them to swallow this bitter pill, though.
