Subs: Henderson, Bailly, Jones, Mata, Greenwood, Wan-Bissaka, Matic, van de Beek, Elanga.

  5. Premier League contextpublished at 13:09 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2021

Aside from the game showcasing the start of the Ralf Rangnick reign at Manchester United, it also represents a chance for the Red Devils to move themselves up to fifth in the table. A win takes them three points behind fourth-placed West Ham, who secured that superb win over title-chasing Chelsea yesterday. Palace could do with a result themselves. They've lost the last two to see them slide into a host of clubs in midtable but looking over their shoulder.

If Tottenham beat Norwich, it will be they who move up to fifth, regardless of what Man Utd do. They'll also have a game in hand on the Hammers. The Canaries were sent bottom of the pile by Newcastle's first win of the campaign yesterday and so could do with a response. Because of goal difference, even a win wouldn't take them out of the bottom three, though.

Leeds are still floating near the bottom, but only a point behind today's opponents Brentford, who are 12th. A win for either would mean they can breathe ease... for a little bit anyway.

As for Villa and Leicester, the win is probably more crucial for the former, but the latter could really do with the three points to try and get a season back on track to match their efforts of the last two campaigns.

  6. 'It gives us some balance'published at 13:08 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2021

    Tottenham v Norwich (14:00 GMT)

    Norwich City

Norwich boss Dean Smith, on going 5-3-2 today: "We felt with the quality Tottenham have got we might need that extra defender, but it also gives us some balance with the ball as well.

"By going with two up front we can occupy their three centre backs as well. We can't just be reliant on Teemu Pukki, hopefully Adam Idah can help take some of the pressure off him.

"Spurs play a simialr way but more aggresive, hunt the ball back and will run hard."

  7. 'We need to keep our identity'published at 13:07 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2021

    Tottenham v Norwich (14:00 GMT)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte: "The next step is to improve in all the aspects we are working on and to continue to work on the physical, mentality and tactial aspect - to improve and be better in the future.

"After one month I can be sastsified for the commitment, behaviour and desire they have shown me, now we have to continue and implement the football for our identity, a big solidity and all the improvement I want to see.

"Emerson Royal is ill and I decided to change only one player, with Japhet Tanganga, he is a young player, a good player and I trust him.

"We need to keep our identity, our system, our idea to play football and then if there are changes in formation from our opponent it can become a bit difficult at the start, we must be ready to face the situations."

  8. Into the unknownpublished at 13:06 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2021

Man Utd v Crystal Palace (14:00GMT)

    Simon Stone

Manchester United are taking a leap of faith with Ralf Rangnick.

The 63-year-old has excellent credentials as a director of football and a clear vision for how the game should be played.

But he has only been an orthodox manager for two seasons since the 2011 Champions League semi-final, when his Schalke side were dismantled by Sir Alex Ferguson's United.

Rangnick gave an excellent 30-minutes press conference on Friday though and these are the first words in his programme notes today.

"Managing Manchester United, even in an interim capacity, is a massive challenge but, to me, this feels like I am in the right place at the right time."

He has picked the same XI that started the win over Arsenal on Thursday. So Cristiano Ronaldo starts up top.

Patience is not a common commodity in modern football. But it is something Manchester United may need to show a little bit of in the coming weeks. They're unlikely to undergo a revolution overnight, but if Rangnick's track record is anything to go by, they will evolve into something far more imposing.

And to be fair, things are not that bad on the field. Yes, it's all comparative, and while seventh in the Premier League and a place in the Champions League last 16 is absolutely grand for most clubs, it's not enough for Manchester United.

So, out with Ole and in with the new.

  18. Postpublished at 12:46 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2021

Much has been said and written about the kind of football Ralf Rangnick will bring to Manchester United - the high-pressing, full metal revolution that will finally bring the Premier League's most successful club kicking and screaming into the modern age.

Well, if they come out all guns blazing as a fully-formed, wholly new beast today after just a few days of the German working with them they should probably start plotting where the statue goes.
