When you look at how the game was going, I was surprised with Equatorial Guinea, they were dominating the game but never created any chances.

Senegal have been defending a lot but when you have a player like Mane, he can create a situation like he did for the first goal. He has been brilliant.

The quality of Equatorial Guinea's football has improved since they made their Africa Cup of Nations debut in 2012 when they qualified as co-hosts alongside Gabon.

That team included a number of 'mercenaries' brought into bolster the team and in truth it did not feel like a true Equatorial Guinea national team.

Since then they have searched high and low to find players from the diaspora - and have found several esepcially in the lower leagues in Spain.

It does have the feel of a more authentic team whose football has also improved immensely since then.

It's really important for Equatorial Guinea to ride out the storm. If they let Senegal get another one they could be out of sight before half time.

  10. Mane missing his barber?published at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2022

Seems Sadio Mane is missing his barber while on Africa Cup of Nations duty. His trademark yellow streak in his hair has gone.

    A commentator's nightmare!

Senegal's Leicester holding midfielder Nampalys Mendy pops in a long-range shot that nobody is expecting but Jesus Owono catches it.

  12. YELLOW CARDpublished at 37 mins

    Senegal 1-0 Equatorial Guinea

It's only 1-0 so Equatorial Guinea need to not lose their heads here. Jose Machin shoulders Pape Gueye in the back and gets booked.

  13. Postpublished at 35 mins

    Senegal 1-0 Equatorial Guinea

Equatorial Guinea are just hanging on now. Sadio Mane gets the ball and puts it across the six-yard box. It's a definite goal unless a player in red gets there first, which luckily they do.

The question is now how do Equatorial Guinea react? The more bodies they throw forward the more gaps Senegal will find.

    Senegal's tails are up now.

Saliou Ciss's cross is desperately hacked behind and the favourites are suddenly looking good.

  16. Finally some Senegalese quality!published at 19:32 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2022

    Nick Cavell
    BBC Africa Sport in Cameroon

At last at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Senegal show the quality that the names on the teamsheet suggest they have. Saliou Ciss to Sadio Mane's whose through ball is perfect for fromer Bristol City striker Famara Diedhiou.

Jesus Owono will be disappointed to be beaten at his near post - maybe the promise of a worn Michael Jackson glove was not enough of an incentive.

Former South Africa midfielder on BBC Two

Senegal without really throwing a punch in the opening stages find themselves 1-0 up.

The quality of the pass from Mane is what made the goal. He is world class and when it matters he seems to deliver.

  19. Postpublished at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2022

    Senegal 1-0 Equatorial Guinea

That's a goal and assist for Mohamed Salah and an assist for Sadio Mane today.

Egypt and Senegal (if they win here) reaching the semis means those two won't be going back to Liverpool any time soon.
