Sulaimon Adelekan: For a team that have never won the African Cup of Nations, I don't consider Senegal as giants of African football and I don't see them getting past Equatorial Guinea tonight.

The underdogs certainly aren't overawed in the opening six minutes. I'm not sure they're going to come out and play too much - although having said that Senegal have only scored three times themselves.

We really hope Equatorial Guinea come out from playing a deep-lying defensive game. Stopping the game with tackles is a tactic that has worked for them against the bigger teams, but we really hope they come out, show us what they are made of and give as good as they get.

What a game we have in store. The weight of expectation lies firmly on Senegal's shoulders, but what a story we could have if underdogs Equatorial Guinea could make it through.

If you want an indication of the difference between the stature of these players.

Senegal have Liverpool's Champions League and Premier League winner Sadio Mane up front.

Equatorial Guinea captain Emilio Nsue, who is expected to play up front, has not had a club since leaving Apoel in Cyprus last summer.

Goalkeeper Jesus Owono has mostly played in the fifth tier of Spain, with one La Liga game for Alaves. Senegal's Edouard Mendy is a European champion for Chelsea.

Senegal's centre-backs play for Napoli and PSG. The Equatorial Guinea versions are at Antequera and Las Palmas' B team.

Equatorial Guinea are really dangerous on set-pieces - this is an area that Senegal have to be really careful.

You could sense the excitement from the Equatorial Guinea players and fans during their national anthem.

This is the first tournament they have actually qualified for - their previous two Afcons have been ones they have hosted or co-hosted.

Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper Jesus Owono has an extra incentive in Cameroon after being given a chance to own a piece of pop music history.

Owono, 20, has been offered a glove worn by Michael Jackson if he can help the team go on and lift the trophy.

The country's vice-president Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, who was handed a three-year suspended jail term for corruption by a French court in 2017, is the man who has put his memorabilia on the line.

Sadio Mane is the main man. He is a guy who loves his country. He is a guy who is willing to fight for his country.

When you look at the challenge [that led to his head injury in the last round] you see the passion he has to make sure he is driving his team and trying to win this Africa Cup of Nations.

Senegal v Equatorial Guinea (19:00 GMT)

Senegal are the overwhelming favourites today despite not impressing so far.

Aliou Cisse's side have only scored three goals - but have not conceded. An injury-time Sadio Mane penalty was their only goal in the group stages - and Mane and Bamba Dieng scored as they beat Cape Verde in the last 16.

"We have been gaining momentum since the start of the competition and we will play our best football to get to the semi-finals," said Cisse.

  15. Can Equatorial Guinea pull off another surprise?published at 18:51 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2022

Senegal v Equatorial Guinea (19:00 GMT)

Equatorial Guinea, ranked 114th in the world, are surprise quarter-finalists.

This is only their third time at an Africa Cup of Nations - although they did reach the semis in 2015.

They beat fancied Algeria and then Sierra Leone in the group stages - and saw off Mali in the last 16 on penalties after a goalless draw.

Boss Juan Micha said: "It will be a final for us, and we will play our game to put on a good match and go as far as possible."

The big news is that Sadio Mane starts for Senegal after going off in their previous game with suspected concussion.

Senegal name the same team who beat Cape Verde 2-0 in that game.

Senegal: Mendy, Sarr, Koulibaly, Diallo, Ciss, I Gueye, Mendy, P Gueye, Dia, Diedhiou, Mane.

Equatorial Guinea make two changes as captain Emilio Nsue and Josete Miranda replace Federico Bikoro and Dorian Jr.

Equatorial Guinea: Owono, Akapo, Obiang, Coco, Ndong, Edu, Ganet, Machin, Buyla, Miranda, Nsue.
