Strong effort by John McGinn as he hits a powerful strike from distance. David de Gea can only bat it away but Danny Ings is offside as he tries to get to the loose ball.

No way this is staying 1-0.

Sir Alex Ferguson is here tonight and looks very happy with what he has seen so far.

Manchester United have looked very good going forward although perhaps a little too open at the back.

Excellent skill from Emiliano Buendia as he weaves through the Manchester United defence before sending the ball towards the far post but just out of Danny Ings' reach.

I think he went for glory rather than the assist there.

Man Utd look very comfortable, the way they've started. They are very wide and Villa haven't dealt with it yet, or anything in the box.

Manchester United win another corner but this one is wasted as Bruno Fernandes gets his cross all wrong after the set piece is initially played short, sending the ball high and wide.

It should be 1-1!

Aston Villa look to respond immediately as they win a couple of corners in succession, the second of which is flicked on by Tyrone Mings but Ollie Watkins can't turn in at the far post.

Looking at the replay it seems Victor Lindelof got an important touch after the flick on to do just enough to put off Watkins.

Great cup tie so far!

What a header and what a ball in. Fred isn't looking for anybody, he is putting it in that danger area. McTominay commits with everything he does and that is a very good goal. Fred takes out five Villa defenders, just passengers in claret and blue. That was an avoidable goal on Villa's part.

Manchester United players seem keen to shoot at the earliest opportunity as Marcus Rashford works his way along the edge of the box before letting fly but his shot is blocked. Scott McTominay picks up the loose ball and his shot does get through but it is straight at Emi Martinez.

You have to play the patient game tonight. You have one bite at this cherry, you've got to get it right. The Man Utd fans have been frustrated with the body-language of their players. Work hard, run hard, you've got the quality.

Manchester United's fans have started the game with a few songs aimed directly at Steven Gerrard or Liverpool.

The man himself doesn't look at all bothered.

Ings sends Mings away down the left but the defender's cross is very much a defender's cross and is scooped up by David de Gea.

Decent start with both sides looking to attack early.

Manchester United are the first to attack as the ball is worked wide to Bruno Fernandes but Ezri Konsa does well to block off his options and in the end his attempt at a cross goes out of play.

If they arent good enough to play for Man Utd, it's not the players fault. It’s the clubs problem for employing them. Talking about standards, what are the standards? The statement is these players aren’t good enough. Don’t vent it at the players, not their fault. If you are going to get ridiculed by your own fans, it isn’t helping.

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard got the reception he would have expected as he walked down the side of the pitch.

He smiled at one of his coaches as if to say, normal reaction here.

For a second it looked like he was going to stand in the Manchester United technical area but he was just waiting to shake Ralf Rangnick's hand.
