Manchester United have won the FA Cup 12 times, with the last of those victories coming back in 2016 when they beat Crystal Palace.

Last season they lost to Leicester City in quarter-finals and reached the semi-finals the season before, where they lost to Chelsea.

With the Champions League and a fight to finish in the top four, it may not be the highest on their list of priorities this season but it nevertheless represents a good chance of winning a trophy.

Aston Villa have won the FA Cup seven times but have not progressed beyond the third round since exiting in the fourth round in 2015-16.

"We see it as a really important game,” says Villa boss Steven Gerrard, who lifted the trophy twice as a player.

“This is not a case of focusing on the league and we’re going to be changing the team and the squad very much.

“We’re going to Old Trafford to try and get a positive result for the club and try to qualify for the next round. This is a super important game for us.”

Ralf Rangnick did his best to temper stories of dressing room unrest at Manchester United, which have dominated the headlines since their home defeat by Wolves.

The German was categorical some of his players will be unhappy at present, because of the size of the squad he has inherited.

When asked if he feels the players are behind him and his staff, Rangnick said: "They are at least trying. I am sure they are listening, they are trying to follow the advice we give them."

With the FA Cup their best chance of ending five years without silverware, he could do with them responding against Aston Villa.

Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has been talking openly in his programme notes for tonight's FA Cup third round tie.

It is a week since United were outplayed at Old Trafford by Wolves in the Premier League, since when rumours of discontent behind the scenes have been rife.

"When I took this role as Manchester United interim manager, I knew there would be a lot of work to do," he said.

"It's not possible to just walk into a new club midway through the season, say a few words and everything is instantly straightforward."

  10. A point to prove?published at 18:43 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2022

After an unbeaten start to his tenure as interim Manchester United boss, the honeymoon period is over for Ralf Rangnick.

The German suffered his first defeat in charge last week following a run of five games unbeaten as United lost to Wolves. That was then followed by reports of unrest within the Manchester United squad.

Consequently, all eyes are on how they will respond when they host Aston Villa in the FA Cup third round tonight.
