  1. Dembele to PSG is OFF!published at 10:23 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Guillem Balague
    Spanish football journalist

The message from PSG now is that Ousmane Dembele's transfer from Barcelona won't happen this winter.

Dembele's representatives admitted to be happy with the agreement with PSG and Barca were suggesting players that could have been coming the other direction.

However, there is now no way out for Dembele...at this moment in time.

  3. 'Sell to buy strategy'published at 10:20 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Wolves

Kim Smith, Wolves Fancast – Official_Smithy:

Four wins in a row and six matches unbeaten has resulted in many fans daring to dream of Europe. Holding onto key in form players such as Ruben Neves and Max Kilman will be crucial to our success and developing our ‘Bruno Ball’ style of play.

Wolves transfer business so far has been minimal with a ‘sell to buy’ transfer strategy frustratingly apparent. Japanese midfielder Hayao Kawabe was signed for a minimal fee from Grasshoppers and instantly loaned back to the Swiss team. The permanent 12 million signing of Hwang Hee-Chan from Leipzig was also confirmed, however the deal is not expected to go through until July 1st 2022. With four goals, Hwang is Wolves joint top goal scorer so far this season but considering Wolves have an option to buy in the summer on the player, this seems strange timing.

I like many Wolves fans breathed a sigh of relief when Adama Traore’s proposed transfer to Tottenham had been scuppered by Barcelona. However, the reported loan deal until the end of the season with no obligation to buy seems like really poor business.

Renato Sanches is a name that won’t go away and one who would bring a different dimension to the Wolves midfield. It’s unlikely, but if Wolves were to pull this off, European football under the lights would become serious possibility.

So where could Aaron Ramsey end up then? If reports of his weekly wage are correct, and Juve expect any club taking him on loan to pay that in full, there surely aren't that many who could afford him?

  5. Ramsey not Wolves boundpublished at 10:15 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

There have been rumours of a Wolves move for Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

Ramsey has been frozen out in Italy and is open to returning to the Premier League.

But I have been told Wolves are not one of the clubs expressing an interest.

  7. Lampard 'will galvanise the fans'published at 10:10 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Everton

Former Everton captain Alan Stubbs believes the appointment of Frank Lampard will galvanise the supporters at Goodison Park.

"It's been so fragmented over the last few years," Stubbs said on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast. "I hope Frank can galvanise the supporters.

"From what I was hearing, he was the one most fans wanted so he has a headstart and is getting off on the right foot compared to some of the previous managers."

"It's not going to be easy to avoid relegation though. He has a squad of players that need an arm around them. Goodison is a hostile place to play in and some have been found wanting.

"Frank will need to instill some confidence in them."

  8. Big Dunc to assist Lampard?published at 10:08 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Everton's new manager Frank Lampard (he is but we're just waiting for confirmation) has asked Duncan Ferguson to remain as part of his staff.

It will be interesting to see how he responds and what role he has actually been offered. Will he simply take his place on the bench as he has under six different Everton managers or will he try to prove his credentials for the managerial job elsewhere after missing out this time?

Liverpool fans were pretty much resigned to another bland transfer window, until the quick-fire signing of Luis Diaz from FC Porto.

Naturally, supporters have spent hours watching YouTube compilations of the 25-year-old Colombian and decided unequivocally that Luis Diaz is the second coming!

Diaz adds depth to an already world-class frontline. Like Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Jurgen Klopp can now rotate his forwards without facing a severe drop-off in quality.

The reality is when Liverpool spend big under Klopp - and at £37m plus add-ons, Diaz counts as big - we rarely miss. Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Fabinho, Diogo Jota, Mo Salah, Sadio Mane...

In fact, the only expensive transfer under Klopp who could be deemed a failure is Naby Keita - and that's firstly debatable and secondly largely as a result of his injuries.

You'll no doubt have seen that Liverpool got some significant business done yesterday with the signing of Luis Diaz from Porto.

The arrival of the wide forward could well have a knock-on effect into today, on Takumi Minamino and on Divock Origi. Here is a little bit on Diaz from Empire of the Kop editor, Jordan Chamberlain...

  12. Who is Hugo Ekitike?published at 09:53 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

So, apparently Newcastle are looking to spend another £20m plus on a striker this window. The striker in question is Hugo Ekitike. But who is he?

Well, he is a 19-year-old French right-footed forward (of Cameroonian descent) who has been plying his trade at Reims for a couple of seasons now (with a loan last season thrown in). Having worked his way up through their reserve side, Ekitike made his senior debut in October 2020 but was sent out on a temporary deal to Danish Superliga club Vejle Boldklub soon after.

He netted eight times in 17 appearances before returning to France for this campaign. So far in 2021-22, he has eight goals in 19 Ligue 1 appearances. Reports suggest his biggest assets are his movement and work-rate - someone that Newcastle may feel will feed off the knock-downs supplied by Chris Wood.

At 19, though, he is still a young, raw talent. He may well hit the ground running, but he is also one the club can develop.

  13. Targett to Newcastle on loan?published at 09:48 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Newcastle United are hopeful of securing a deal to sign Aston Villa left-back Matt Targett on loan until the end of the season today.

The 26-year-old defender's first team opportunities are likely to be limited at Villa Park after manager Steven Gerrard signed Everton's France left-back Lucas Digne in a £25m deal.

  14. Newcastle have had an eye on Brighton all windowpublished at 09:43 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Brighton & Hove Albion

    Scott McCarthy, WeAreBrighton.com

Sitting pretty on the edge of the European spots, Brighton were never likely to do much January buying. The one player they need to scale even greater heights is a striker, but that issue was never going to be addressed halfway through the season.

Brighton’s main business this month has been batting off interest from Newcastle for well, everything. Three Albion players and technical director Dan Ashworth have been on the St James’ shopping list that we know of. Dan Burn looks set to be on his way there.

Why stop there, though? Newcastle might as well go the whole hog and bid for the tea boy, the receptionist and the pic n mix stall in the Amex East Stand concourse.

A good deadline day for Brighton would therefore involve keeping this squad together – unless Newcastle (or anyone else) want to offer ridiculous money to get their hands on Yves Bissouma and Adam Webster.

  15. 'Burnley need everything but I'll be happy with one'published at 09:38 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Burnley

The lack of depth in the Burnley squad is well documented. So when asked the question “what do Burnley need to buy before today’s deadline?”, it is easy to default to the “everything” answer.

Analyse a little further and you can probably narrow this down to three key positions: a central midfielder, a centre forward and a right-sided winger.

The potential signing of VfL Wolfsburg's Wout Weghorst would fill one of those positions. And to put it bluntly, it just feels nice to have legitimate transfer activity to get excited about.

Part of the struggle so far this season has been the gap left when Westwood and Brownhill have pushed forward in a hope to try and create at least something for our strikers. - which in turn has left our defenders horribly exposed.

Fill that team with Orsic, Cornet, McNeil and Weghorst and direct them to lead the attack, and Westwood and Brownhill can just sit a little deeper and help out at the back.

I would still like three, but after the previous 4-5 transfer windows, one would do.

Is it right that Newcastle might be able to buy their way out of relegation when the clubs around them don't have the money to do so? There is no doubt that with more than half the season gone, Newcastle were one of the worst 3 teams in the league. Should the rules allow them to do this mid season?

Brentford have signed "the highest profile player we've ever had", according to Beesotted podcaster Billy Grant.

Eriksen has joined the Bees until the end of the season and Grant says his arrival is a huge coup for Thomas Frank's side.

"We've got lots of Danish connections at Brentford," he said on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast. "But the Danish fans can't believe Eriksen is coming here.

"He's a brilliant footballer, the highest profile we've ever had, and I'm absolutely delighted.

"We can't believe he's coming here either - it's brilliant."

James: Whoever is pulling the strings at Arsenal doesn’t understand the importance of making the top 4 in the Premier League. January has been a calamitous month. From not winning a single football match to letting players go, the last 31 days have ruined the club’s season.
