  1. Jones to stay?published at 09:15 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Manchester United defender Phil Jones now looks likely to stay at the club.

Jones recently made his comeback after almost two years out with a knee injury.

He had been in talks with French club Bordeaux but negotiations have stalled amid concern over the amount of playing time Jones would get.

It is still possible a loan deal could be arranged but United think the most likely scenario now is for Jones to remain at Old Trafford beyond this evening’s 11pm deadline.

Michael Smith: Very happy with NUFC this morning, the clips of Bruno show we have a talent coming and a strong leader too, Trippier was the starting point and if the Hugo Ekitike rumours are true then we are going to be a different side next week.

  3. Defensive midfielder missingpublished at 09:08 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Aston Villa

David Michael, My Old Man Said podcast

Steven Gerrard said that Aston Villa supporters should be "excited" by their transfer targets at the start of the window and the club certainly haven't disappointed. The recruitment team have proven to be great opportunists in adding two bonafide world class players to the Villa first XI in Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Digne.

Securing both Emi Martinez and Kortney Hause on longer contracts and adding Calum Chambers and keeper Robin Olsen, on top of Digne, sees the defensive unit set up nicely for the immediate future.

This is Villa's best January transfer window since 2007, when they bought in both Ashley Young and John Carew.

A top class defensive midfielder is perhaps the remaining missing link. Is Juventus's Rodrigo Bentancur, the man?

  5. More to come for Newcastlepublished at 09:02 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Alistair Magowan
    BBC Sport

Bom dia. It certainly is if you’re a Newcastle fan. Sunday’s signing of Lyon’s Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimarães for £35m took the club’s spending to £72m during this window and they are hoping to add Brighton centre-back Dan Burn to their incomings after the two clubs agreed a £13m deal.

But Newcastle have further interest in France, and could look to sign Reims striker Hugo Ekitike while Aston Villa full-back Matt Targett has been linked.

There are sure to be outgoings too, so a busy day awaits on Tyneside.

  6. Quarter-back Guimaraes?published at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

Nobody knows football players better than the team behind the Football Manager game series. Scouts from all over the world provide detailed analysis to build the game's comprehensive database.

Sport Interactive's Andrew Sinclair, PR & Content Executive, & Tom Hardy, Social Media Assistant, will be giving their assessments of players throughout the day.

A Brazilian international, Bruno Guimaraes has been one of Lyon’s most creative players this season, recording five assists in 26 games across all competitions.

Guimarães is quarterback-like in his approach to the game, looking to dictate the tempo, recycle possession and spring his teammates clear with killer balls from the base of midfield when the opportunity arises.

A confident passer blessed with great vision and a delightful first touch, it’s the 24-year-old’s array of mental strengths that should put him in good stead to hit the ground running in England.

Donny VDB to anyone today is a sad indictment of how Manchester United has been and continues to be run as a football club. All the best, go and enjoy actually playing football, you know, what you were signed for.

The earlyish arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood have been very much welcomed by Newcastle fans. Trippier in particular is already being spoken of as a future captain.

The Bruno Guimarães deal is done and from 48 hours ago barely knowing of him I am now convinced we’ve signed the equivalent of Patrick Vieira 2003.

With Guimarães coming in along with - hopefully - a centre back (possibly the left-footed Geordie Dan Burn) I should think most Newcastle fans would be overjoyed with the business done.

  9. Ferguson future uncertainpublished at 08:44 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

A day of great significance ahead at Everton. They will appoint Frank Lampard as their new manager, confirm the signing of Donny van de Beek on loan from Manchester United and try to bring in other re-inforcements.

One sub-plot to all of this is what the future holds for fans' icon Duncan Ferguson?

Ferguson has been on the staff of six managers - five of them sacked - at Goodison Park and had two spells as caretaker manager. Will there be any place for him in the new set-up or will it be time to finally break away from the blue bubble elsewhere?

It seems he will not achieve any wish to manage Everton until he does.

Transfer deadline day has become a biannual staple of the football calendar.

It is a day when the high-octane drama of a football match can be recreated without the action, and the same emotional highs and lows achieved.

But it can also be filled with upheaval and worry, changing real lives very quickly. So what is the day itself actually like?

BBC Sport asked three people with three very different perspectives to find out.

    Brentford

Discussing the process of signing Christian Eriksen, Phil Giles, Brentford Director of Football, said: “We first discussed the possibility of Christian joining Brentford when we heard that he would be leaving Inter. It is fantastic that he is now with us.

“Naturally the process of signing Christian was more elongated than most transfers. I understand that many people will have questions about the process. In order to respect Christian’s medical confidentiality, we won’t be going into any details. Brentford fans can rest assured that we have undertaken significant due diligence to ensure that Christian is in the best possible shape to return to competitive football. Now Christian has made the decision to sign for Brentford, all parties want to focus fully on football.

“We are sure that Christian will make a big impact at Brentford and on the Premier League between now and the end of the season.”

  14. 'A world class player'published at 08:25 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Brentford sign Eriksen

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank, speaking about new signing Christian Eriksen: “I am looking forward to working with Christian again. It has been a while since I last coached him, and a lot has happened since then. Christian was 16 at the time and has become one of the best midfield players to appear in the Premier League. He has also won trophies all over Europe and become the star of the Danish national team.

“We have taken an unbelievable opportunity to bring a World Class player to Brentford. He hasn’t trained with a team for seven months but has done a lot of work on his own. He is fit but we will need to get him match fit and I am looking forward to seeing him work with the players and staff to get back towards his highest level.

“At his best, Christian has the ability to dictate games of football. He can find the right passes and is a goal threat. He also has very, very good set piece delivery, both from corners and direct free kicks. He is a player you can find with the ball, and he will come up with a solution to the problem in front of him. Christian will also bring experience of top level football to the club. I expect him to have an impact in the dressing room and at the training ground."

How can any of us forget just what Christian Eriksen has been through in the recent past.

We all watched on in horror in the summer when the Dane collapsed on the field, suffering a cardiac arrest during his country's game with Finland. The quick thinking of medics and team-mates thankfully meant he was saved.

Speaking to Danish broadcaster DR earlier this month, he said: "My dream is to rejoin the national team and play at Parken [Denmark's home stadium] again and prove that it was a one-timer and that it won't happen again. I want to prove I've moved on and that I can play on the national team again."

His agent, Martin Schoots, told the BBC: "Playing in England again would absolutely feel like coming home for Chris and his family.

"Christian has been treated exceptionally well by the British public, not only because of his top football skills, but also because of his human values, his modesty and altruism."

It's a nice start to the day to have such a feelgood story get the ball rolling. Welcome back Christian!

  16. 'A leader likened to De Bruyne'published at 08:13 Greenwich Mean Time 31 January 2022

    Newcastle United

Bruno Guimaraes led Brazil to Olympic glory and has been likened to Kevin de Bruyne - but can he help Newcastle avoid relegation?

"If anyone here is afraid to play, pass the ball to me because I want to play and win this trophy."

It has been more than two years since that half-time speech at the Beira Rio stadium, but manager Tiago Nunes still remembers it vividly.

The team he coached at the time, Ahtletico Paranaense, were playing Internacional de Porto Alegre in the second leg of the 2019 Brazilian Cup final and were drawing 1-1 after the first 45 minutes.

As it stood, following a home 1-0 victory in the first leg, they were risking seeing the game head to penalties if they conceded another goal.

Bruno Guimaraes was far from happy with what he had just witnessed on the pitch. And so, despite being just 21 at the time, he told players much older than him to keep it simple and send the ball to him if they needed to.

It worked out and, after a much better display, Athletico sealed a 2-1 victory and lifted the trophy.

One player who doesn't look like going to Newcastle is Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele.

The France international has agreed terms with Paris St-Germain and could move on Monday's transfer deadline day if the two clubs can agree a fee.

The Spanish club want 20m euros (£16.6m) for the 24-year-old, who is out of contract in the summer.

Barca paid an initial £96.8m for Dembele in 2017 but are now asking him to take a pay cut or leave.

Manchester United and Chelsea also showed interest in a deal for him.
