Everton have not been great in either of their two away games under Frank Lampard so far, losing at Newcastle and Southampton, so they will have do far better to get anything here.

At the same time, it's hard to know which Tottenham team will turn up on Monday night. Antonio Conte picked a strong side against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup, but they never really got going.

Conte has been in charge since the start of November but it is still hard to work out why they are so inconsistent. I don't think they are the greatest defensively, but I am not sure what the issue is with them sometimes when they come forward.

They are at home and with Everton's poor form on their travels I am going with a Spurs win, but I am not exactly confident that is what will happen.

    Prediction: 2-0

  10. Kenny thankful for Lampard 'belief'published at 19:38 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March 2022

    Spurs v Everton (20:00 GMT)

Everton full-back Jonjoe Kenny says the belief Frank Lampard has showed in him has helped him thrive.

The former Wigan, Oxford, Schalke and Celtic loanee has featured more regularly since Lampard took over.

“Having that belief from your manager can make a big impact,” he told the Toffees website.

“The manager has been different class and shown that belief in me. I don’t think people did see the best of what I can do. Lately, bit by bit, I’m showing more and more.

“People might see things like the Cruyff turn [against Leeds] – these are things I could do for a long, long time, it’s just that I probably didn’t have the confidence at the time. Now, the belief has been put into me and I’ve got that backing."

Everton's new manager Frank Lampard will be delighted to have England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin back after another injury. It has been an interrupted season for such an important figure but they will hope he comes good as Everton hover dangerously near the relegation zone.

Tottenham v Everton used to be an opportunity to catch a glimpse, an indication even, of which of these two ever-hungry sides might just be nourished with a top-four finish.

These days, the fixture has more of a 'bald men fighting over a comb' vibe about it.

Spurs’ third first-team coach appointment since Mauricio Pochettino’s exit in 2019 has been struggling to stay on message in his recent news conferences.

Before Monday evening’s clash, Antonio Conte referenced the backstory to his appointment: “The Tottenham story is this, many ups and downs," he said. "To win something and to try to fight for something important, you have to be stable and avoid this up and down. To change this is to change the story of this club for 20 years."

Meanwhile, Frank Lampard finds himself not so much flirting with a relegation scrap, but openly courting one. The victor of this game only stands to win spared blushes.

Antonio Conte hopes Tottenham can become more consistent for the rest of the season, but the Italian says changing such "ups and downs" in a short space of time is "impossible".

"I always said from the first day I arrived that Tottenham’s story is that there are many ups and downs."

Spurs have lost their last two home league games, leaving them seventh in the table.

"To be competitive and to try to win something, to try to fight for something important and to become a strong team, the first thing that has to happen is to be stable and to avoid these ups and downs.

"To do this and to change these types of situations in a short time is impossible. Not only for me but for every coach.

"Especially to change the story of this club for 20 years. For sure sometimes you have to be upset. Sometimes, it's normal to be angry."

Really not sure what sort of Spurs we're going to see today. We're up against an Everton team low on form, but with the added bonus of Calvert Lewin in the lineup... it could be a walk in the park, but we could also get thumped.

Frank Lampard says he does not have a “magic wand” to address Everton’s away form but insists he has generally been pleased with what he has seen.

The Toffees have the worst away record in the league after picking up just six points away from Goodison Park this season and Lampard accepts it’s a problem he must fix.

“Those numbers are pretty clear and it’s not what we want,” he said.

“Against Newcastle, there were a lot of circumstances that turned that game. We didn’t play well at Southampton – that’s the only game I didn’t like.

“When you come in mid-season there are some issues that take work and it’s my responsibility to solve them.”
