Jack Grealish sends a wild one out of play for a Southampton throw - about the only mistake by a Manchester City player so far this afternoon. They've otherwise been so typically good in possession.

Good tackle by Tino Livramento and he sends a quick ball down the line. Adam Armstrong gives chase but Aymeric Laporte reads the danger well.

Southampton were pressing Manchester City high early on and it was giving them some reward but that goal has shaken them a bit and the hosts are now standing off their opponents.

Well someone was going to score early the way this one started with both Southampton and Manchester City going for it. And it's City who strike first.

Raheem Sterling should have scored, Adam Armstrong hit the post for Saints then Sterling made amends.

It's all action. Southampton's very dapper manager Ralph Hasenhuttl claps his hands in encouragement after the goal,. He knows Saints have already threatened City here.

Not good news for Southampton because this is the 28th time this season Manchester City have scored the first goal. The previous 27 times they have taken the lead they have gone on to win.

Gabriel Jesus tries to add a second but fires well over.

It's a shame for Southampton because they started the game so well - they left the door open and now they've been punished. I still think the game-plan for them is to keep pressing and try to win the ball.

Gabriel Jesus goes to ground inside the box under pressure from Mohammed Salisu but he does go down a little too easily. No penalty.

It's a gift - the central defender gives the ball away very very cheaply and you can not afford to do that around this quality that Manchester City have.

They pass the ball beautifully but this ball should really be cleared but they're on it in a flash and Raheem Sterling is not going to miss from there.

Not great defending. I don't think City have done a lot to warrant a goal. It's poor from Southampton and that's disappointing because they started the game very well.

Oriol Romeu plays a wonderful ball through the Manchester City defence and Adam Armstrong peels away to go clear on goal.

The former Blackburn forward flicks a shot towards the far post and it seems to take an age to get there before bouncing back off the upright.

I think Sterling's having a go at Gundogan for not playing him in earlier.

But he should still be hitting the target. It just shows on the counter-attack the quality Manchester City have.

Lots of space for Ilkay Gundogan to run into as Manchester City charge forward. He has Raheem Sterling for support and eventually feeds the forward inside the box but Sterling slams his shot into the sidenetting.

Manchester City are just starting to click. Southampton's best bet is to go after City in possession. They want to get it into the front two nice and early when they win the ball back.

We saw Sterling practicing that finish before the game. Goalkeeper reads it well.

Raheem Sterling curls an effort from the edge of the box towards the far corner but Fraser Forster dives across to snatch the ball out of the air.

Good tempo at the start of this game.

Stuart Armstrong drives through the middle, gets to the area before squaring to Shane Long. The ball is just behind the striker and he gets it trapped under his feet as he tries to claim control. He almost bundles his way through but Manchester City deal with the danger.

Good start by Southampton.

The Saints have another free kick soon after that earlier one one James Ward-Prowse sends it into the area but too close to Zack Steffen in the Manchester City goal.
