  5. 'Can't keep giving goals away like this'published at 17:33 British Summer Time 23 April 2022

    FT: Norwich 0-3 Newcastle

    Norwich City

Norwich boss Dean Smith, speaking to Sky Sports: "You can't keep giving goals away like we do and compete at this level. There was nothing in the game. Thirty-fine minutes and we don't defend well enough with a ball over the top. It is marginal if it is on or offside. Probably would have gone against us, such is our luck. We don't help ourselves. The difference is they took their moments and we didn't take ours.

"The attitude has been good since I came here but sometimes you need to improve your levels and individual responsibilities on the pitch. I would like to see a few of them get more angry when we are 3-0 down. We keep trying to play a certain way but you need to cut out mistakes.

"It is a major setback. At home, our last performance against Burnley was really good and got our supporters up. For 35 minutes they were behind us and supported us. We have points to play for. It is tough to get 15 points but that is what we have to play for."

  8. 'Our effort was there'published at 17:30 British Summer Time 23 April 2022

    FT: Leicester 0-0 Aston Villa

    Leicester City

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I thought we started the game really well and worked the ball into good positions. In the last couple of games, we played really well, but in the finial third we couldn't find the killer pass. Maybe that is a lack of energy because of the number of games we've played; the speed of our attacking combinations is not quite as we want it. Our heart and effort is there though.

"It is great to see Jamie Vardy back on the pitch; he needs more minutes to get up to speed because he's just returned to training, but hopefully he can contribute between now and the end of the season."

On the Roma game on Thursday: "It'll be amazing. We're really looking forward to it. We've had good preparation with all the games, but now we can have a little bit of extra rest. The players need that and the fans will be ready for it."

  10. 'Now is the best moment of the season'published at 17:29 British Summer Time 23 April 2022

    FT: Man City 5-1 Watford

    Manchester City

Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus to BBC Radio 5 Live: "It’s amazing, so happy. Sometimes you play so good and don’t score and sometimes it is like this and you score all the chances you have.

"I’m happy it was my day and I’m very happy not just because of the goals but that we got the three points. We did our job.

"Now is the best moment of the season. When you decide the games and win the trophies. That’s what football is for us.

"We want to stay there to arrive at the end of the season fighting for all trophies. Sometimes it is not always like this but we try to do our job.

"We have a strong game on Tuesday so all our focus is now on Real Madrid."

On whether he has earned a start against Real Madrid on Tuesday: “Everyone can play and help. Today was my day, maybe Tuesday again, but maybe another player.

"I’m here to help with the goals of course but sometimes the assists or passes. Everyone wants to play big games. I’m no different.

"We have to work and keep focused, and to recover because Tuesday is going to be a tough game."

  11. 'The level is catching up with us'published at 17:29 British Summer Time 23 April 2022

    FT: Norwich 0-3 Newcastle

    Norwich City

Norwich boss Dean Smith, speaking to BBC Sport: "I thought there was nothing in the game at half-time but we were two goals down because they took their moments and we didn't take ours. We can't keep giving goals away at this level. You get punished. The level is catching up with us. We gave Manchester United three goals last week. We've given Newcastle a helping hand today.

"Teemu scored at Manchester United. He has a really good chance to make it 1-0 today. Goes around the keeper but unfortunately we don't get the finish. We are a little bit tool reliant on him. We don't have too many goals from other areas. Goals change games. But coming back from 2-0 against a team that have spent £100m in the window and we've promoted an U23 player. That is the levels.

"You just look at the January window they have had. They have improved. Eddie is an unbelievable coach. But they are owned pretty much by a country, so they are always going to improve."

    FT: Man City 5-1 Watford

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to Sky Sports: "We started well from the first minute of the first half and second half. We didn't defend well, we were not aggressive enough. But the players up front, not just Gabriel for his incredible four goals, but all of them were brilliant."

On Gabriel Jesus: "If there's one person who deserves the best in life for him, his family and his friends, it's Gabriel. All of us at the club, when he has one of these situations, we're happy for him because he's so generous. It doesn't matter what position he's going to play, we know how he fights for his mates. He's fantastic."

On the title race: "Nothing changes. When we won against Brighton we were two points behind [before the game], now we're four in front. Brighton was a 'final'. We had another 'final' today and we won it. Now we have an opportunity to play a 'final' against Leeds.

"Nothing changes. We have to win all five games to be champions."

  14. 'An incredible turnaround'published at 17:26 British Summer Time 23 April 2022

    FT: Norwich 0-3 Newcastle

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Newcastle were superb. Eddie Howe deserves great credit. He made changes again to the team that got a good result in the week so the players that came in responded.

They scored three very good goals, Joelinton two and Bruno another one.

The signings, the confidence, the belief that Eddie has given Newcastle has been outstanding when you consider they were five points adrift in 19th when he took over. It's been an incredible turnaround.

  18. 'A clean sheet was the least we deserved'published at 17:19 British Summer Time 23 April 2022

    FT: Leicester 0-0 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We came here to win the game and on chances we could have done that. It is a tough game here; they are well coached and a clean sheet was the least we deserved. We'll take a positive point away, and that is a good base for the next two games.

"I thought Ollie Watkins was fantastic second half; he did lots of running and gave the Leicester defence a tough time. All that was missing today was a goal, but the chances keep coming so a goal will come. We had some good play and overall, probably shaded the chances."

  19. 'We love Joelinton to bits'published at 17:17 British Summer Time 23 April 2022

    FT: Norwich 0-3 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Sport: "It is an important win for our standards and what we expect of one another. We knew it would be a difficult game today and the start was. It wasn't until we scored the first goal that we got control of it. Credit to the players again. They have incredible desire to go and win football matches at the moment and there is confidence running through the team. Really pleased.

"It is a lot of hard work, great team spirit and unity. Quality on the pitch as well. But it is a lot of factors from top to bottom of the club. Our supporters have played a big role too."

On Joelinton: "I have a great relationship with him. Really like him as a player. He has so much ability. The two goals were so great for him to score. Two different goals. We needed the first. He played dual roles today as he has done most of the season. He started up front and then moved to the left wing. We love him to bits. It is great that he has built the relationship with the supporters."

On Newcastle's fans: "It was a great moment at the end with players giving their shirts to the fans. That bond has built since we've been here,. I hope it continues as it is fundamental to a successful football team. I hope they enjoyed watching us today. We were good after we scored, with attacking football, which is what they want to see."
