Bristol Rovers are in with a shot of stealing the third automatic promotion place from Northampton Town today and they have started quickly at the Mem.

First and foremost, they need to beat relegated Scunthorpe, but that might not be enough.

Northampton have a five-goal advantage over their rivals and Joey Barton said this week that if Rovers get in front they might start throwing everything at it to close that gap. He’s certainly stacked his bench full of options just in case, with five of the seven players there all attacking-minded.

While the title race is pretty simple, who gets the third automatic promotion place behind Exeter and Forest Green is anyone's guess.

On paper you would say Northampton are the favourites - they travel to a fourth-from-bottom Barrow side with nothing to play for and boast a healthy five-goal advantage over Bristol Rovers.

But should the Cobblers slip up all bets are off.

Rovers host bottom-of-the-table Scunthorpe, so on paper a win should be straightforward against a side who have tasted victory just four times all season and just once away from Glanford Park.

But you would think Scunthorpe's players will want to go out of the league on a high, so it might not be as simple as it seems for Joey Barton's men.

Should either side slip up then Mansfield, Port Vale or Swindon could all strike.

So don't go anywhere because you won't want to take your eyes off this!

If you think Manchester City supporters have it tough after their side's 14-point lead over Liverpool at the top of the Premier League has been cut to just one, spare a thought for Forest Green Rovers fans.

After their 1-1 draw at Sutton Unitedon 12 February they were 11 points clear at the top of League Two and absolutely flying.

Title rivals Exeter at that stage were 16 points behind them with a game in hand - but what has happened since has been remarkable. There has been a 17-point swing in favour of the Devon side, who are now a point clear of Rovers.

Here's how top of the 2021-22 Championship table finishes.

It'll be Luton v Huddersfield and Sheffield United v Nottingham Forest in the play-off semi-finals.

The first leg in the Hatters v Terriers game is on Friday evening with a 19:45 BST kick off and the game at Bramall Lane is a 15:00 BST kick off on Saturday.

• Sheffield United finish fifth and Luton sixth after home wins over Fulham and Reading respectively. The Blades humbled the Whites 4-0.
• Middlesbrough miss out on a place in the play-offs after falling to a 4-1 defeat at Preston.
• Second-placed Bournemouth beat Millwall 1-0 and Huddersfield finish third with a 2-0 win over Bristol City.
• Nottingham Forest finish fourth after two late goals see them draw 1-1 at Hull.
• Relegated Barnsley hammed 4-0 at West Brom and League One-bound Peterborough end the season in style with a 5-0 victory over Blackpool.
• Blackburn win 2-1 at Birmingham and Swansea lose 1-0 at home to QPR.

Harry Cornick's cheeky goal gives Luton three points that sees them finish sixth, although even a defeat would have seen them claim the final play-off berth because of the other results.

They'll face fellow surprise package Huddersfield in the play-offs.

Brennan Johnson's penalty in time added on looked to have won it for Forest but the home side then grabbed a late leveller to mean Forest finish fourth.

They will play Sheffield United in the play-offs!

Sheffield United finish fifth with a thumping 4-0 win over the Championship champions Fulham.

An afternoon to really forget for Middlesbrough, whose play-off hopes ended in the worst way with a heavy defeat at Preston.

Emil Riis scored twice for the hosts - one from the penalty spot - to end his season on 16 league goals.

Kieffer Moore's fourth goal in four matches proves the difference between the Cherries and Lions.

Promoted Bournemouth enjoy one final win of the season, while Millwall fall short of the play-offs at the final few hurdles.
