England are a very good team and their squad has unbelievable depth - it is probably the strongest in terms of depth that there is in the tournament.

You look at their bench... you don't want to look at their bench because so many players can change a game in a second.

There is nothing about tonight that is going to be easy, but I have seen stranger things happen.

I've been to every English game so far and it feels like it is the best atmosphere so far. Wales fans and England fans are making a real noise outside... and it's starting to fill up inside as well.

  4. 'Wales have overcome the odds before'published at 18:45 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

    Dafydd Pritchard
    BBC Sport Wales in Doha

It felt quite telling when Robert Page, during his post-match news conference after Wales' 2-0 defeat by Iran, said: "We've got to prepare for another game against England, a local derby to finish off with."

To finish off with? Perhaps he just meant the group stage but, while Wales are not officially out of the World Cup yet, this did sound like an unconscious admission of defeat.

Wales have overcome the odds before in major tournaments, most notably by beating Belgium - then ranked second in the world - in their momentous Euro 2016 quarter-final.

But that was a better Wales team than the current one, and that was the last time Wales beat a team ranked above them in a competitive match.

They have nothing to lose against England. Page must learn lessons from the first two matches, be ready to change tactically and finally give Wales' fans in Qatar a performance to match their pride at seeing their country finally play at a World Cup.

Football fans at the Baildon Hall Club in West Yorkshire

Dozens of people have already arrived at the Baildon Hall Club in West Yorkshire to watch the match on a big screen.

Proud Welshman Oswin Parry (front centre, red shirt) is the club president but he’s outnumbered by England fans.

He reckons Wales will need to play one of their best games in history if they’re going to qualify.

I asked if everyone will still be friends come 9pm.

There was a long pause... and then they agreed they probably would be. Probably!

Liv: Trent's not getting a kick in this tournament, is he?

Richard: Come on Wales. We don't need to be as good as we once were. We only need to be as good once as we ever were.

Mr Higgins: Good changes. A fair balance. However, it's never about who starts. It's usually about how Gareth Southgate uses those that come on.

After scoring an England calendar year record 16 goals in 2021, Harry Kane has only scored three times in 10 games in 2022, all from the penalty spot. Kane hasn’t scored with any of his 20 non-penalty shots in 2022 so far.

  8. Dodgy recent formpublished at 18:43 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

Wales have never previously gone through a major tournament without winning at least once; they won once at the 1958 World Cup, four games at Euro 2016 and one game at Euro 2020.

They (D2 L5) are on a run of seven games without a victory in all competitions for the first time since May 2003 – November 2003 (D2 L5), last enduring a longer winless streak in between March 2000 and September 2001 (12).

England have won just one of their last eight games in all competitions (D4 L3), their fewest across an eight-game span since a run between October 2001 and June 2002 (also one win).

  9. 'When will Southgate take the handbrake off?'published at 18:42 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

    Stephen Warnock
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

There's always a feeling with Gareth [Southgate], certainly my feeling, when is the handbrake going to come off? At what point are you going to let this team of individual brilliance be allowed to express themselves? He loves them to play within a system and he wants them to be organised and have the defensive capabilities and I understand that. But these guys play at top teams.

They play for Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool. whoever they play for, they're playing for the top teams. They are capable of doing it, they have to do it for their club teams and have that discipline. I don't understand why Gareth doesn't trust them to do that but that's his style. I've been very critical in the past.

I think we should be winning. I'm not being overconfident but I think we have the ability to win it. From a Wales perspective, as an outsider looking in, that passion that we see from Wales, we haven't seen it in the last few games. Whether the occasion has just got the better of them at times. You see it form the fans, but from the players point of view, we just haven't seen that energy from them. Whether we will see it today will be a big question.

You can run around all day, but if you are not tactically sound and set up well, it's a bit of a waste of time.

We haven't had that for 90 minutes yet.

All the Welsh players will be concentrating on will be improving their performance. As a player you don't want to leave this World Cup knowing you haven't given a performance in three matches.

That won't sit well at all with some of these players, so performance is everything tonight.

  13. 'Moore can do all facets of the game'published at 18:40 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

    Danny Gabbidon
Former Wales defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Kieffer Moore can cause problems for any defence really. He's a bit of a throwback centre forward which you don't see much of or that central defenders don't come up against these days.

He's capable of doing all facets of the game, he's not just a big target man. We know how good he is when the ball comes into the box, he attacks the ball really well and his hold up play is good. He's really mobile for a big man and we will run in the channels as well but he does need that service from wide areas.

We need to get on the ball in the right areas. We need to be better in all departments, defensively more solid, less open, particularly with the type of players England have in the attacking areas, we have to retain possession better to allow our better players to get on the ball in the right areas to hurt them.

  14. Kane says 'hype' around injury similar to Beckham and Rooneypublished at 18:39 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

England captain Harry Kane says the "hype and noise" around his injury is similar to when David Beckham and Wayne Rooney suffered their issues before and during previous major tournaments.

Kane sustained a heavy blow to the ankle in the opening 6-2 win over Iran and was taken off after 76 minutes.

The Tottenham striker had a precautionary scan, but then played the whole of the laboured 0-0 draw against the United States.

"Whether or not I am fully fit or injured, someone else can come in - in any position," Kane told BBC Sport.

"The team isn't just me. We have 26 players here who are all looking to achieve the same thing: to win a World Cup.

"I was an England fan before I was an England player. I know [about] when Rooney got injured, when Beckham had the injury, so I know the hype and noise that can come.

"I know and understand why it happens, but from our point of view, we are fully focused on ourselves to go far in the tournament.

"I feel good. I know there has been a lot of noise. In the Iran game, I could easily have played the full 90 minutes, but the manager changed it for tactical reasons.

"I had a precautionary scan - which is common in our sport - and it came back pretty much all clear. Good to go.

"Physically, I feel good and I will be ready for the game."

I really like the Wales team. Playing Aaron Ramsey at 10 gives him the chance to go and be creative, then you have the back four and the midfield two protecting everything else.

This is exactly the team what I wanted to see - thank you Rob [Page]!

I like to see Joe Allen back in there. I was gutted for him missing out through injury.

He is a player who over the years has made us tick and has been a huge miss for us in the last two games.

It's quite an attacking team. It shows intent with that formation.

I am glad to see Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey in the side because they can produce that one moment that opens England up.
