  1. 'Anyone but England' - the game Wales do not wantpublished at 18:33 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

If you hear a Wales fan utter the words "anyone but England", it may not necessarily be a declaration of support for their neighbours' opponents.

Sure, there might be a little schadenfreude involved but, for many, that phrase is more representative of a desire not to face England.

Wales have waited 64 years to play at a World Cup, a precious opportunity to bask in the tournament's technicolour glow and showcase this nation to a global audience it has never enjoyed before.

What they did not want was to find themselves in England's orbit again; to have their time in the limelight diminished by the overbearing presence of their oldest rivals, for whom there is nothing new about gracing this grandest stage.

So when the World Cup draw was made in April, there was a collective groan around Wales when the winner of their play-off was put in the same group as England. They had not even qualified yet - that would come in June - and already a little of the magic about the prospect of a first World Cup since 1958 had gone.

25 year old Ieuan from Maesteg is positive about Wales' chances: "All the pressure is on England. They're going to, hopefully rotate the team and with a bit of luck.

"[Wales] know they did poorly against Iran and they're going to want to put it right against England."

Celdon, 23 from Llanelli says: "It's not looking good, the odds are against us but you've got to support Wales when it's against England no matter what, so hoping for a goal.

"It's not looking good but support to the end."

21 year old Carys from Maesteg says, whatever the result, she has been made proud by the Wales team.

"I think either way the boys have done us proud. They've made history since 1958," she says.

"For us to be a nation of three million people as well they've done us proud, whatever the score."

  3. The big boy pants are on - Pagepublished at 18:31 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

Wales manager Rob Page, speaking to BBC One, on the changes to his side: "This is a must-win game. We've got to rely on the other result as well. If this is our last game, then at least we got up and had a go. It's a brave decision but it's one that we want to go out and have a go.

On Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey starting: "It was an easy one for me. They're still worldclass players who at any moment can chage the game.

"As a team we haven't performed to our capabilities, not just the individuals, so we take that responsibility - myself included - and we hope tonight we can put a performance in that our supporters can be proud of."

On his comments about Wales needing their 'big boy pants': "Oh yes, they're on! We want to roll our sleeves up and have a go tonight."

  4. 'Southgate must ponder balancing act'published at 18:30 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer in Doha

Southgate will have to ponder a delicate balancing act before the final group game against Wales.

It would take a catastrophic reverse for England to miss out on qualification for the last 16 but the simple fact that there is still work to be done means Southgate cannot contemplate widespread rotation, as he surely would had they been through already.

England will know this will be a different sort of World Cup game, more akin to a Premier League local derby, against a Wales team in a desperate plight after drawing with the USA and being deservedly beaten by Iran.

Southgate is aware that the narrative that he is a conservative manager was back on the agenda after the dismal goalless draw with the USA on Friday.

He is an expert, though, at keeping out such noise and will rightly feel that phase one of his and England's task at this World Cup is complete if they move into the knockout phase and come out on top of Group B.

  5. 'I would love to score against Wales'published at 18:28 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

    England

More from England captain Harry Kane on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Without the ball, we had to be more compact at times, we were a bit spread amongst the team from back to front, not everyone was pressing, we got caught in between so we need to be better at that aspect. In the final third, we just need to be more clinical.

"Against Iran we showed how clinical we can be, we scored six goals in about seven or eight chances and run away with the game. Against the USA we maybe didn't have clear cut chances but we got into good areas where we just missed the final pass. Little details that can make a difference when you're playing tough teams.

"Throughout my career as a striker and my own personal ambitions, I want to score in every game and I always say that. The Euros was no different, I wanted to score in the group games, it didn't come until the round of 16 against Germany and this tournament is no different.

"Of course I would love to score against Wales and get off the mark and hopefully get up and running in this tournament. But, as always, if it doesn't happen, I won't panic. I feel my game is a lot more than just scoring goals, whether it's assists or hold up play or defending, I feel like I can bring a lot to this team and that's what I try and do every game."

The Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium is starting to feel like a home from home for Wales, who are playing all three of their World Cup group games here.

Not that they've particularly taken to the place so far, drawing against the USA and losing to Iran before tonight's match against England.

The venue is hosting six group games and one second-round tie in total, and you can see the first signs of a bit of wear on the pitch.

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

    Danny Gabbidon
Former Wales defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

The midfield area has been the poor area for Wales so far in this competition. Players too far ahead of the ball such as Aaron Ramsey, Harry Wilson. What Joe Allen gives you is discipline. He'll just sit in front of the back three or four.

He's capable of handing the ball in those tight areas, he can play those through passes and get the likes of Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey on the ball in the right areas of the pitch where you can hurt the opposition. No surprise to see him starting. Needs must tonight.

We didn't come here expecting to win the World Cup, but we did come here to watch our players perform on the field, as well as our fans showing who we are off the field.

More than anything, even tonight, as long as this group of players put on the performance we know they can put on, I think everybody sings until the morning and will have enjoyed the World Cup.

It's about the performance, the pride and the passion that represents who we are - that's what we want to see on the field.

Phil Foden's non-appearance against USA created a stir of debate but he gets his opportunity tonight as England look to seal qualification for the last 16.

Manchester City's creator is an England star of the future but will want to make an impact here and now against Wales.

England manager Gareth Southgate has made four changes but this is stlll a side with plenty of attacking quality.

They cannot be as passive as they were in the bore draw in their second game because Wales, wounded and desperate as they fight to stay in this World Cup, have to go for it and will be determined to make their mark here in Qatar after a such a disappointing campaign so far.

  12. Wales must 'put big boy pants on'published at 18:22 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

Manager Robert Page says Wales must put their "big boy pants on" to cope with criticism and finally give their fans a World Cup performance to be proud of in their final group game against England.

As we know, Wales are bottom of Group B after drawing with the USA and losing to Iran, a game in which Page says his players "crumbled" under pressure.

Wales must beat England on Tuesday to have a chance of reaching the last 16.

"We've worked so hard to get into this position," said Page.

"My frustration and disappointment for the players is that we've shown nowhere near the levels of performance that have got us to this World Cup. That's what really disappoints me.

"We've picked them up, we've addressed it, we've got to draw a line under it, the last performance.

"Irrespective of the other results, whether we go home or whether we go through, we have to give a performance that our supporters can be proud of.

"We want to react in a positive manner and I'll pick a team that'll go out and give everything to the cause."

England manager Gareth Southgate, speaking to BBC One: "We think [Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford] can cause Wales problems and it's some freshness for the side. They have both trained really well."

On Kyle Walker's selection: "He's ready to start now and I think it's good to get him in the team and for him to get some football behind him will also be helpful."

On the emotion of the occasion: "We haven't talked much about it being a local derby. There has been a lot of noise around us. We have to concentrate on our football and our work rate has to be higher than our opponent's."

England have won each of their last six games against Wales, scoring 11 goals in that run and conceding only one, that Gareth Bale free-kick at Euro 2016.

Wales’ last victory dates back to May 1984, courtesy of a Mark Hughes goal (1-0).

Wales are in a weird position for the next couple of days because we are not definitely out of the World Cup yet, but we know we are really.

Being realistic, we have to forget about making the last 16 because our chances are so slim. Instead, our focus should change to just leaving this World Cup on a high.

That's the mentality I would have as a player in this situation and then if by some miracle we do stay in the tournament, the celebrations would be unbelievable.

So we have to lift ourselves for this final game in Group B and it obviously really helps that we are playing England on Tuesday.

That's a massive occasion in any situation, but especially because it's the first time we have met at a World Cup.

We haven't beaten them since 1984 so, if we win, whoever scores will probably be a hero for life in Wales.

This is the first ever meeting between England and Wales at a World Cup finals. No big revelation there, considering that the latter have only reached one previous World Cup, back in 1958.

In fact, this is the first meeting either side has had with a fellow British nation in a World Cup finals.

The pair have met before, though, in one other major tournament finals - in the group stage of Euro 2016.

In that encounter in Lens, Daniel Sturridge scored a dramatic injury-time winner to give England a comeback victory after Jamie Vardy had cancelled out Gareth Bale's free-kick opener.

Wales would have the last laugh, though, going on to win the group and brilliantly reach the semi-finals before losing to Portugal.

England would suffer a humiliating loss to Iceland in the last 16.

I'll give you a clue... his surname rhymes with mine.

Yep, it's the one and only Chesney Hawkes.

A booking very much with a young audience in mind, that.

Who's doing the last 16 games? Tiffany? Lou Bega? Toni Basil?

Professional sport, you think one team is out of it and then all of a sudden there is a little twist, a sending off, a goal out of nothing or a free-kick and the game turns on its head. Momentum swings.

Tonight that's what I'm hoping for. I'm hoping we can keep a clean sheet for as long as possible, some of those demons might creep into English minds.

For me, coming out of this game with a positive result would do wonders. If we draw, we don't want to come home, but it ends the campaign on a positive note.

If we could nick a win and go through, you probably won't hear from me for the next couple of days.

It's going to be a really big ask, but it's not impossible.

I want to see the same aggression and pace of play [from England] that they had in the first game against Iran.

This is a game that splits loyalties amongst friends and families and towns and villages. All that goes out the window tonight and every single man on that pitch wants to win tonight.

And what I will say, from an England point of view, remember when the Wales players were laughing at England in 2016 when they got knocked out the Euros? I'm sure Gareth Southgate will mention that.

  20. 'Our performance is key'published at 18:12 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2022

    Wales v England (19:00 GMT)

We all know the score. Or rather, the score England need to avoid. Gareth Southgate's side will advance if they avoid a four-goal defeat, while a win would guarantee top spot.

It means Southgate may not be able to rotate the side as much as he would have liked.

There have been calls for the likes of Manchester City forward Phil Foden to start. He came on after 71 minutes in the 6-2 win over Iran and was unused in the draw with the United States.

But Southgate said the goal is "to win football matches" and that he must find the right formula.

"We have to balance freshness with stability and that's always a decision you're making when picking a team. We have a chance to win the group with a positive result," the England manager said.

"There's a lot resting on the game for both teams. Our performance is the key."
