Enzo Fernandez smashes the ball across the face of goal, no one gambles on it, but the ball is soon put back into the area where Angel di Maria's near post shot is kept out, although there wasn't much behind the effort.

You feel that if Argentina are able to get one goal to equalise, then they should have enough to go onto win this game. It’s also no surprise that Saudi Arabia’s high-line has deepened drastically, especially now that Alvarez is on.

Lionel Messi tries to slip in Nicolas Tagliafico but Saud Abdulhamid is there to cover off the danger and concede the corner, which comes to nothing.

Twenty minutes to go. Surely Argentina - unbeaten since 2019 - are going to get back into this?

The lack of comparison of teams based in different continents competitively between World Cups always brings up interesting results. The big question is how will South American teams stack up against their European counterparts this tournament - based on the current performance of the Copa America finalists I'd say not well!

Spain lost their first group game in 2010. Turned out alright for them.

Saudi Arabia are going to have to defend well if they want to hold onto this lead because Argentina have upped it a few gears now.

This is a cracking game now. Not necessarily in overall quality but in terms of tension and drama. It has taken me a while to feel fully in World Cup mode due to its timing but I am very much feeling it now.

It is just wave after wave of Argentina attacks at the moment. Definitely no high line from Saudi Arabia now.

That is more of a penalty than the one they got in the first half.

I thought Saudi Arabia might be in trouble there. I can't believe that. There was definite contact.

They should have had another penalty there.

  15. Postpublished at 64 mins

    Argentina 1-2 Saudi Arabia

Argentina dominated the first half and it's 1.03-0.14 in their favour on xG.

What that says is that all Argentina have been wasteful while Saudi Arabia have taken their chances. The yellow circles represent the goals.

Saleh Al Shehri and Salem Al Dawsari have been clinical for Saudi Arabia.

He should really be scoring, he just doesn't connect properly.

Wow! This is football at its best. How have they managed to control their belief even tho after conceding so many goals (even tho they were offsides)? This is beautiful and astonishing.
