Argentina have been frustrated by Saudi Arabia's high line, but will they get the better of it in this second half?

Laurie: How about we change the offside rule to say ALL of the attacking player has to be goal side of the defender? Open air between the two would make everyone (except slow defenders) happy?!

Credit to Saudi Arabia. They have taken a high risk with the high line but they've stopped Argentina doing what they want to do. They've had to go more direct.

Easiest solution to the offside issues (tight calls, delayed flags etc) - just get rid of the law. The game’s ultra-professional now, players can’t just goal-hang for 90 minutes. Play without it.

If you look at this Argentina the only way you can say they are candidates is how they defend. Saudi Arabia have closed the lines so tightly, Argentina couldn't find Messi but they are full of players who look sharp and can resolve even when Messi is not found.

I really haven't seen enough from Argentina in this half to make me agree with their favourites status.

Since 1966, three of the 10 instances of a team failing to have a shot in the first half of a World Cup game have been Saudi Arabia.

Argentina have already had more offsides in this game (seven) than they had in the whole of the 2018 tournament (six). That could prove costly in terms of goal difference.

Enjoying the game so far. Watching Messi play is always a joy, take it in folks you'll never see a player like it again.

Argentina have been utterly dominant but they will definitely feel like they need another one.
Lionel Messi has been on the fringes of things but you get the feeling at any moment he could just spring to life. They need to get him on the ball more...

This Saudi offside trap has been top class! An extremely brave high line, high press approach.

Argentina have created chances but they just haven't been able to time their runs properly. They will be frustrated.
Saudi Arabia have stayed in the game. They've been alright in possession but they are lacking a creative spark in the final third.

For all the hype about this Argentina team, how many of them would get into England's side? Messi undoubtedly. Any others..?

Lionel Messi's early penalty is the difference at the break, although Argentina did have three ruled out for offside, two of them very tight calls.
Saudi Arabia will be happy to keep the score so close, however. They are still in this.

He looks emotional because you work so hard to come and play at a World Cup, not many players get to. There are tears and grimaces there. He will be disappointed.
Argentina 1-0 Saudi Arabia
A blow for Saudi Arabia as captain Salman Al Faraj is having to go off. He had tried to carry on after a knock earlier but he can't continue. Nawaf Alabid replaces him and Al Faraj looks absolutely gutted on the sidelines. Hopefully that isn't his World Cup over.
