Really nice play down the right-hand side and Ritsu Doan just puts it into an area where he is hoping one of his midfielders or strikers is making a late run.

Keylor Navas pulled his hand out of the way because he knew he'd only be pushing it out into the penalty area, so he had to leave it and hope for the best.

Doan was one of the scorers against Germany. He's made a lively start to this one. Costa Rica are struggling to find any rhythm.

    That's better from Japan!

Good work from Ritsu Doan who delivers a fizzing ball across the six yard area but there is no one in blue to divert it over the line.

Costa Rica were found wanting at the back there.

I wondered how Costa Rica might set up. They were a bit light in midfield against Spain. They have set up with a three at the back, turning into a five. I think the emphasis is on counter-attacking football.

This is what is known as a slow-burner. Little goalmouth action so far.

Fingers crossed that changes soon. Costa Rica will be the happier of the two teams.

  6. 'Different proposition'published at 10:10 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2022

    Japan 0-0 Costa Rica

This is a different proposition for Japan. It suited them being able to play on the counter-attack against Germany. Now the emphasis is on them to go and break down Costa Rica.

Japan look the more creative but Costa Rica keeper and captain Keylor Navas has had a quiet opening 10 minutes. He'll be pleased with that after all the back pain he endured fishing the ball out of his net against Spain.

  8. 'Good take'published at 10:07 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2022

    Japan 0-0 Costa Rica

Really good take from Gonda. A couple of Japanese players raced away wanting to counter attack but he just held onto it, slowing the game down, realising Costa Rica have just put them under a bit of pressure. Time to take the sting out of it.

Michael Oliver is a busy man. The early stages have been peppered with free-kicks. Here's another for Costa Rica but Shuichi Gonda is off his line to make a confident collect.

Costa Rica's game plan is a no brainer. After conceding seven in their last game, they want to keep it tight and make sure Japan don't score early. It's a frantic start. The team from Central America have won a free-kick inside Japan's half but it comes to nothing.

This is just the start that Japan would have wanted. They are out of the traps like a greyhound.

Everything Japan do is rapid, they don't seem to ponder on anything. It's a fast, flashing start to the game.

    Lightning start by Japan!

They're on the attack immediately and a cross is pumped into the box before they win the game's first corner.

If Germany had been clinical, they would have been out of sight. But they just coasted and we saw the quality Japan have in their squad with the players coming off the bench making such a big difference.

Maybe it shouldn't be as much of a surprise, five of that starting line-up actually play in Germany so they knew the opposition.

After beating Germany 2-1, Japan are looking to win back-to-back World Cup matches for the first time since 2002 (against Russia and Tunisia). They have never won their two opening games at a World Cup.

The Japanese national anthem is one of the shortest in the world. The lyrics are just five lines long.
