Japan v Costa Rica (10:00 GMT)

Japan must make sure they "don't dance badly" and undo their shock win against Germany when they face Costa Rica on Sunday, says captain Maya Yoshida.

Their 2-1 victory means a win over Costa Rice could guarantee progress to the last 16 depending on the result of the Spain-Germany game (19:00 GMT).

It would be the fourth time in the last seven World Cups the Asian side have progressed to the knockout rounds.

"Make no mistake, when you win you feel more comfortable," said Yoshida.

"We have to stay calm, prepare well and concentrate on the plan to get us the win.

"The spotlight is on us after the last game and we have to make sure that we don't dance badly. We're not through yet."

Since beating both Uruguay and Italy in their group in 2014, Costa Rica are winless in seven World Cup games (D4 L3), failing to score in five of those matches.

The seven goals they conceded against Spain was as many as their previous eight World Cup games combined.

Costa Rica didn't have a shot in their 7-0 defeat by Spain. Only once since 1966 when that data was first recorded have a team not had a shot during a World Cup game... and that was also Costa Rica, against Brazil in 1990.

Japan faced 26 shots in their opener against Germany, the most they have ever faced in a match at the tournament.

I am dining out on my prediction that Japan would beat Germany in their first match - I actually appeared on Japanese TV to talk about it.

I did not see it as a huge shock to be honest, because they have some excellent technical players, but their comeback was a surprise.

Japan had barely laid a glove on Germany in the first half, but then they changed their system and they were braver on the ball. That was the difference.

As for Costa Rica, well they looked seriously poor against Spain, but Spain can do that against teams with their possession and make you look silly. We might see a very different display if they get on the ball here.

I would still back Japan, though. Win and they are probably through to the last 16, so they have that prize to play for.

    Prediction: 2-0

Despite something of a thrashing at the hands of Spain in their opening game, Costa Rica and their fans are still looking to make an impression in Qatar.

A win today would keep them in contention to reach the last 16.

In come Miki Yamane, Hidemasa Morita, Yuki Soma, Ayase Ueda and Ritsu Doan, who came off the bench to score the equaliser against Germany.

Arsenal full-back Takehiro Tomiyasu was introduced at half-time against Germany but again starts on the bench.

Head coach Hansi Flick says Germany's World Cup clash with Spain is a "first final" as they try to avoid another early exit at a major tournament.

A group-stage elimination in 2018 was Germany's earliest for 80 years and they reached the last 16 at Euro 2020.

After a shock 2-1 defeat to Japan in their opening game, another loss to Spain could end Germany's hopes of progressing in Qatar.

"The last two tournaments were not [good]," Flick said.

"We want to avoid a repeat of this. The focus is on concentration. This is the first final for us at the World Cup and that's what it's about - to avoid a repeat of that."

Spain boss Luis Enrique, whose side beat Costa Rica 7-0, is expecting a tough game.

"Without a doubt, they are the team that is most similar to Spain in terms of dominating the play and controlling it," he said.

"That is a beautiful challenge for us. I think it will be an open game."

  18. 'England won't underestimate Wales' - Trippierpublished at 09:12 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2022

Wales v England, Tuesday, 19:00 GMT

    England

Kieran Trippier says England will not underestimate Wales when the two home nations meet in the World Cup on Tuesday.

The Three Lions will qualify for the knockout stage if they avoid a 4-0 defeat in their final Group B game.

"The motivation is there - England against Wales is a massive game," added Newcastle defender Trippier.

""Every single team in our group are in the top 20. So you can't underestimate any team - you have to give respect and we certainly do to Iran, USA and Wales."

An emotional Robert Lewandowski says he knew time was running out to fulfil his dream of scoring at a World Cup, after netting in Poland's 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

The Barcelona striker, 34, ended a run of four World Cup games without making the scoresheet by scoring Poland's decisive second goal at Education City Stadium.

Visibly emotional, Lewandowski held his head in his hands and pointed to the heavens while his jubilant team-mates surrounded him.

"I'm aware that this may be my last World Cup," Lewandowski said afterwards. "Already during the anthem, singing the national anthem, I felt the emotions inside me.

"I wanted not only to be remembered for being at the World Cup, but for scoring goals there too. I always fought hard for a goal at the World Cup and today, I managed it."
