I feel like I need to apologise to the 5 Live Breakfast listeners because I said I thought this was going to be a great game. The game has hugely lacked in quality.

It feels like both sides have already gone out of the tournament.

Kendall Waston has done really well defensively. He just struggles when the ball is at his feet, to play out. It's not what he wants to do. He just wants to defend and make life difficult for the Japan players and he's done that.

For Japan, though, their decision making has been poor. Against Germany, after making the substitutions, they made such good decisions. But so far today it's been really poor.

It's just so high and wide. You can see what Campbell is trying to do, he tried to push it with the outside of his left foot into the top corner. But he gets it horribly wrong.

Germany must be scratching their heads and asking: 'How did we lose to Japan?'. They've managed one attempt in the opening 35 minutes - and that was off target. They're struggling to make an impression.

This is one of the last days where we've got four games to watch in a day. Soon it'll be the last games of the group stage and only being able to watch two games a day. It's cold turkey stuff!

Before you know it we'll only have one game a day and this World Cup will be running away from us. We've got to enjoy it while we've got it.

Costa Rica were 3-0 down after 31 minutes against Spain. They'll be delighted they've kept it tight and frustrated Japan so far.

Worst game of the World Cup so far? There's lots of time for it to improve but it hasn't been great so far.

Noel Fitzpatrick: Japan need to bring on Mitoma to break from midfield and create something in the box.

Maybe it is a game plan for Costa Rica to sit in and frustrate Japan then really go for it in the second half.

You can see the quality of Joel Campbell and Anthony Contreras but finding opportunities to get them on the ball, that's where it's been really difficult for Costa Rica.

Costa Rica are sloppy in possession. They're giving the ball away cheaply. A crunching challenge sees a player in blue go down but he immediately springs to his feet to carry on. No theatrics or trying to con the referee.

What's apparent in this game so far is that Costa Rica are playing very narrow. They're making sure that, whenever Japan come forward, they're pushing them wide.

Lively scenes in Tokyo where it is early evening and thousands have gathered to crowd around screens. Not too much to get them excited so far.

Much is made of the heat in Qatar but Keylor Navas looks like he's about to go for a hike up the Pennines in November. He's the most wrapped up player I've seen at this World Cup.

Half a chance for Japan before Kendall Waston hoofs it clear. The team in blue are looking the more likely to score.

Lots of empty seats but those who are inside are making a terrific noise. Half the ground is decked out in the red of Costa Rica and the only half is the blue of Japan.
