It's alarming how easy it is for the Canadian midfield players to put their head up, put their foot and the ball and just chip one over the defence. There's no pressure at all.

The Canada fans are up on their feet in anticipation everytime their side get the ball.

And they do look dangerous, fizzing the ball forward quickly into the final third.

I think Canada have just got to be careful that they keep focus. I think Vitoria will be very vocal in organising the back four. It's a bold move as Croatia have gone for a front three but Herdman must fancy that his wing-backs can cope with them.

    Croatia 0-1 Canada

Croatia produce a cross from the left from Borna Sosa and it is a bit unconvincing from Canada goalkeeper Milan Borjan as he opts to punch instead of catch and doesn't get much distance on it. Luckily he gets away with it as Canada soon win a free-kick.

As a Canadian/English dual national I’m so much more excited watching this Canadian team actually have a go and be brave rather than England just trying not to lose games. Absolute breath of fresh air.

Alphonso Davies’ strike after 1:07 was the quickest goal scored at the World Cup since Mathias Jorgensen (Denmark) vs Croatia in 2018 (57 secs).

Davies' goal was Canada’s first ever goal at the World Cup in what is their fifth match.

I'm concerned about the space in front of Croatia's back four. They have to sort it out and quickly. There's just so much gap between the defence and midfield. The ball can just be knocked through. It's a real shaky start from Croatia.

This is a young and vibrant Canada side that are getting stuck into the ageing Croatians.

Can they create another early chance and put the game to bed?

Interesting that Luka Modric is playing very high in the Croatia midfield. I expected him to do that because he played very deep in the last game.

Obviously still a long way to go in this one but this is how it stands in Group F...

That's Belgium, ranked second in the world, in third place in the group.

That's Croatia, finalists four years ago, bottom of the group.

David: Canada are just a joy to watch - a young, hungry, proactive and tactically astute side, even if they don’t progress from this tough group I think they’ll be a great host nation in 2026.

Rakesh: Wow! What a start, amazing Alphonso! this is the World Cup which just keeps on giving. All the European teams being made to look bang average by so called average teams! More of this please.

  12. 'Croatia just so passive'published at 16:08 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2022

    Croatia 0-1 Canada

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was a poor start from Croatia's back four, really fearful. Jonathan David just controls the ball and you can't believe the centre-back hasn't gone tighter.

Early in the game as a centre-back you're looking to lay down a marker that you're going to dominate the opposition. It's just so passive the whole opening from Croatia.

    Croatia 0-1 Canada

Croatia push for an equaliser and Andrej Kramaric's cross takes a deflection and causes Milan Borjan some problems, but he is just about able to sort his feet out and stop the ball from creeping in under the crossbar.

  14. 'Croatia must get passing game going'published at 16:06 Greenwich Mean Time 27 November 2022

    Croatia 0-1 Canada

    Martin Keown

So many of the games at this tournament have been 0-0 at half-time but this one has delivered perfectly.

Croatia must get their passing game going, especially with that midfield.

Canada are so interchangeable, switching to a back four when out of possession. The Canadian players know their responsibilities and work incredibly hard for one another.

    Shell-shocked in fact.

What a start that is for Canada and their fans have erupted inside the stadium.

It was some leap from Alphonso Davies and it had to be him to get Canada's first ever World Cup goal.

What a goal from Canada, what a strike. I was just thinking that if Croatia wanted to sit off then they'd get punished and boy have they paid the price!

Alphonso Davies has arrived totally unmarked. It's so simple. It's a really good header.

How bad a start is that for Croatia?

    Alphonso Davies

    What a start!

Canada come racing out of the blocks and score the fastest goal of this year's World Cup. It's a great cross from Tajon Buchanan and it is met by a charging Alphonso Davies and he leaps high above his marker and powers a header into the net.

That's Canada's first ever goal in a men's World Cup finals!
