I can't imagine too many neutrals will want Portugal to do well in this World Cup with all their ridiculous theatrics, embarrassing.

For those who criticise Ronaldo its worth remembering that he is has the 5th most assists of all time and 41 for Portugal. Added to his 118 goals makes 159 international goal involvements, integral part of Portugal winning their first ever international tournament. Why does he need to track back? There's 10 other players for that.. teamwork.

Portugal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I believe this will calm everyone down a little bit.

Portugal will go into the next game with a bit more confidence and they will analyse the good and the bad.

We need to be more solid defensively and getting everybody back into shape because there was too much space in the second half. Portugal made a few unforced errors.

If they can improve on that they will always create chances and have goals in the team. If they do that, they will have a great chance in the competition.

Ghana are winless in their last five matches at the World Cup (D2 L3), while the Black Stars have lost three of their four opening games at the tournament (W1).

  10. Watch: Ronaldo makes historypublished at 18:10 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

    FT: Portugal 3-2 Ghana

  11. 'Most important was the three points'published at 18:09 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

Former Portugal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It got very nervy and it ended up being a strange game. Portugal's game management and decision-making in the second half could have been better. There were a few mistakes that they normally didn't make.

I liked the reaction after they scored the first goal but after that it could have ended as a draw.

I'm sure they will look back, analyse it and improve for the next one. The first game is always hard and the most important thing was to take the three points.

  12. 'Big players making strange choices'published at 18:07 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

    FT: Portugal 3-2 Ghana

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

There was so much going on. We spoke at half-time saying this game needed to change and the second half probably was a lot more how I expected it to go.

I didn't expect though how when Portugal went 3-1 up they weren't solid and their big players made some really strange choices.

Ghana very nearly got their rewards.

  13. Day to remember for Ronaldopublished at 18:04 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

    FT: Portugal 3-2 Ghana

What a day for Cristiano Ronaldo. He's the first player to score at five different World Cups as Portugal win their first match of a World Cup for the first time since a 1-0 win against Angola in 2006.

  14. 'A theatrical end'published at 18:03 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2022

    FT: Portugal 3-2 Ghana

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

The look on Cristiano Ronaldo's face when Danilo Pereira has to clear that off the line. - it's heart-in-mouth stuff. There were so many little errors in game management and what to do with the ball.

It was a bizarre, theatrical end to the game.

We weren't expecting that as the first half was very dull.

Portugal have won the game but were far from convincing.

Portugal are up and running. Ghana gave it a good go in the end but must respond against South Korea on Monday.

    What. On. Earth.

Play goes on and Portugal almost hand an equaliser on a plate to Ghana.

The keeper doesn't see Inaki Williams and lets go of the ball inside the box but Williams slips at the crucial moment.

Look at the difference in the volume of Ghana attacks between the first half (above) and the second (below).

Why didn't they give it more of a go before the break? Just wanted to stay in it maybe?
