The US lack the Ducth quality when they come forward.

Antonee Robinson has space to run into and does so effectively, but a heavy touch means he is unable to get the ball effectively into the middle.

There is a clear holding pattern to the Dutch when the USA have the ball. They are fine with the US defenders carrying the ball to the halfway line. They want the team in white to overcommit and then 'bang'! They know they have the tools and talent to smash their opponent apart on the counter.

USA had made all the running until that strike but what a goal by Memphis Depay at the end of a wonderful passing move.

It will feel even more painful after Christian Pulisic missed that early chance but the Dutch goal was a thing of beauty. Ruthless finishing the difference.

What a huge chance this was for the US!

Every time the USA have an attack and they lose it, they're open to the counter-attack by the Netherlands.

This is encouraging for the lads in white. Christian Pulisic is almost in again on the left, but his low cross fails to find a team-mate.

That's the best bit of football we've seen from the Netherlands and the first time they have been in the USA half. Really assured passing to feet and back. We call it up back and through. Memphis Depay just held his run slightly and waited for the pull back.

It's very Netherlands like, assured, confident, knowing that they have the quality. Every pass was the right weight. One touch passing all the way through, what a goal.

It’s not an American watch party if you don’t have banging drums, someone dressed like Uncle Sam and boisterous shouts of USA USA!

Fans are feeling super nervous though because it’s very much do or die. As Andy tells me “whatever happens no penalty shootout please.”

On screens here we can see that it’s not just this DC basement bar that is crowded full of excited fans, the hype is building in other parts of America like Kansas City, Missouri as well as Ohio to name a few.

In New York one fan said he got into his third back up bar to watch the game. The women’s team have done so much to put the game on the map. So now eyes turn to the men - the second youngest team in the tournament - to consolidate that.

It had been all USA in the opening 10 minutes.

The Netherlands had hardly got into the final third before their opener.

You can only marvel at a goal like that.

It was a glorious passing move, played with such precision and speed.

The USA are a fine side at reacting to danger, but they were picked apart there.

This is one of the best goals you'll see in this World Cup. Beautiful, incisive passing. It's pulled back to Depay and it's a lovely finish. It's textbook. They just cut through the US.

We talked about quality and class and it was there in abundance in that goal.

Memphis Depay is away down the left but after cutting inside he fluffs his shot. It makes for an easy clearance.

The Dutch are set-up so deep. It's clearly deliberate as Virgil van Dijk and Nathan Ake are in line with the six-yard box when they have a goal kick. It means Memphis Depay is the highest one up the field and he's barely close to the halfway line.
