Memphis Depay has been very secure with the ball. He knows he's got the pace and the skill. If he had seen Gakpo flying down the win, he would have laid him in and crated a chance.

Zimmerman needed to stand firm. Again the counter attack for the Netherlands. I'm just wondering if they're inviting the US on, the counter seems to be their best ploy.

USA are getting so far and then they are running out of ideas. The Netherlands players are not getting sucked out of position, they are keeping their shape really well.

The Dutch may not be seeing as much of the ball but they are so much more threatening when they come forward.

Memphis Depay is held up and tackled in the box for a Netherlands corner.

Oof, Matt Turner nearly gets himself in all sorts of trouble with a heavy touch to a back pass. It dangles the carroty briefly to the Dutch to nip in, but he then quickly scrambles to belt the ball away.

Some nerves in that.

There were 20 passes that lead to the Netherlands' opening goal.

Pretty, pretty good...

The emphasis is on the USA to try and break down the Netherlands but it's breaking down too often in midfield.

If you don't move the ball quickly enough, it is hard to do anything but go backwards. They need to move it quicker.

The USA just need a bit more quality in the final third. That final ball that creates a chance for a team-mate has got to be so much better.

The USA continue to see plenty of the ball. The Dutch are funnelling them where they want, though.

USA have never won a World Cup match in which they have conceded the first goal (23 games - D5, L18)

The problem for the USA is scoring goals. They don't really have a recognised goal scorer.

The Dutch are in again as a long ball forward drops over the top for Memphis Depay to muscle past his marker. He is wide and far out and ill-advisedly opts to fire a shot that bobbles past the far post.

Never short of confidence is old Memphis.

Netherlands have avoided defeat in their last 22 matches when scoring the opening goal in the World Cup dating back to 11th June 1978 against Scotland (L2-3).

The Dutch are very dangerous on the counter-attack here. There's a defeaning silence from the USA fans every time they come close to the final third.

It must be really hard as a player when you feel you're seeing a lot of the ball and have created chances, but then get picked off like the US have been.

It'll certainly leave the thought in your mind that you can't afford a single mistake.

It's a bit of a risky game for the Netherlands because they're not really trying to engage too high, they're picking their moments but the USA are getting in at times.

One shot and one goal so far for the Netherlands.
