While Spain have lacked penetration and purpose, Morocco's outstanding defensive effort has been a huge factor why.

The north Africans have made 19 tackles and five interceptions so far.

One would imagine they will need to make a few more in the five minutes of added time...

That is the game plan for Morocco. The breaks are becoming quite infrequent now.

But they zipped up the field.

They are just waiting for that tiny little moment. They soak up the pressure and they break with danger.

That Morocco shot was their first effort at goal or touch in the Spain area since that Nayef Aguerd header before half-time.

Their fans have still not stopped making lots of noise though.... and that glimpse of goal has just made them even louder.

This has been so disappointing from Spain really. Nico Williams beats one man for pace but is then tackled by another.

Chance for Morocco but recent sub Walid Cheddira can't make enough contact as he spins and shoots and it's off target.

The two changes have livened Spain up.

Nico Williams has brought a little bit of pace, asking questions of a defender and it has livened things up.

West Ham defender Nayef Aguerd has to be replaced, with Jawad el Yamiq coming on.

The triple sub there saw Abdelhamid Sabiri, Walid Cheddira and Yahya Attiat-Allah replace Noussair Mazraoui, Selim Amallah and Youssef En-Nesyri.

Alvaro Morata shoots from a near-impossible angle. He runs onto a ball in the box and just before it reaches the byeline hammers it across goal. He was never going to score from there but if anybody had gambled, they'd have had an open goal.

The referee gives Spain a corner but a replay shows it hit Marcos Llorente last. Spain play it short as per, and when it's eventually headed away as per.

There is no point passing the ball for the sake of it, Pep Guardiola once said. The purpose of pass, pass, pass is to push and pull the opponents out of shape.

But, despite making almost 700 passes so far, this Spain team have not managed that.

The blur of green arrows on our graphic shows how many have been successful laterally, but there are much fewer in the final third.

In contrast, Morocco's more defensive and compact style has seen them produce just 232 passes - illustrated by their sparser map.

Dan: Spain do realise this isn't the possession World Cup? They need to run at players and take some risks to make space and create chances. It's so dull!
