We all know what the sub-plot to this one is but make no mistake that was a very controlled and fluent first 45 minutes from Portugal.

They thoroughly deserve that lead and could be further ahead.

Switzerland have shown little and must be more ambitious or they are going home.

Switzerland striker Breel Embolo has had a quiet night so far.

The Monaco player has only had 13 touches, which is the fewest of the evening.

Three of those have come from the kick-offs and illuminate his heat map at the centre circle...

Charlie: So this is what happens when you aren’t carrying a player when out of possession, and feeling obligated to pass to him when you are in possession. One of his biggest fans, but much like United, Portugal are a better team without Ronaldo.

Joao Felix has also had an excellent half, providing the assist for the opener and creating a couple more chances.

He charges forward down the middle, finds Bruno Fernandes, whose attempt to lob the ball through to Felix as he continues his run into the box isn't the best.

The way the game has gone, what can Switzerland do to change the game? Not a lot. Portugal can leave Ronaldo out and use him as an impact sub. Switzerland don't really have those options.

At 3-0 it would have been game over but as it is Switzerland are just about still in this as we enter first-half stoppage time.

That would have been curtains. That's a big save from Sommer, because otherwise Switzerland would definitely have been out. Sommer gets down early and pushes it wide.

Huge chance for Goncalo Ramos as he is slipped through on goal and he tries to place it into the bottom corner but Yann Sommer reads it well and makes a fine save.

Fabian Schar is then booked for a foul in the build up to that chance.

Two explosive finishes - one from the boot of Goncalo Ramos and one from the head of Pepe - have put Portugal into a commanding lead which they have deserved on the balance of play.

As our graphic shows, they shaded possession and territory in the 15-minute spell which led to both goals.

A good recovery save from Costa. He gets something on it. He leaps up and gets the slightest touch on the header to take the sting off it.

OFF THE LINE!

Switzerland come the closest they have come to a goal so far in this game as Diogo Costa palms a fierce cross into the danger zone and Remo Freuler heads towards the empty net but up pops Diogo Dalot to clear off the line.

Josh: Can't stand Pepe but what a header that was. Swiss defence was questionable at best there.

Willem: Sommer is mainly looking in awe at all shots and headers coming his way. Not his best game ever.

That goal, by the way, came after Fabian Schär had to head behind a brilliant Joao Felix cross with Goncalo Ramos lurking behind.

The movement of that Portugal front three is causing Switzerland all sorts of problems. You have to ask, would Cristiano Ronaldo offered the same degree of mobility up there?

An explosive header and an equally explosive roar from the Portugal fans. The scorelline doesn't flatter them, they have been comfortably the better side. All the substitutes, including Cristiano Ronaldo, ran over to celebrate with Pepe in front of the supporters.

Portugal scorer Goncalo Ramos is enjoying himself out there.

The Benfica striker has already scored more goals for Portugal in the World Cup knockout stages after 17 minutes than Cristiano Ronaldo has in 514 minutes.

After scoring with one of his two touches inside the Swiss box, the other set up another chance while one of those two touches just outside the area forced the save from Yann Sommer.
