He is one of the all time great players but in the short term he has to do better.

There were already thousands going through the snake-queues towards the spectator entrances when we arrived about three hours before kick-off.
I spotted a group of Portuguese fans with some Argentinians who they had made friends with in the queue.
Will they meet up again in the final?

Image source, Getty ImagesPortugal coach Fernando Santos says he "really didn't like" Cristiano Ronaldo's reaction to being substituted in the World Cup defeat by South Korea.
Ronaldo was taken off 65 minutes into their final group-stage defeat and has denied directing an outburst towards his coach.
"I am not worried if information is right or wrong," said Santos. "I do not read this type of information. I am focused on my team. We are focusing on training and not paying attention to any polls [in the Portuguese media].
"Yes, I did not like it, not at all [Ronaldo's outburst]. I really did not like it and from that moment on that issue [it] is finished."

There were rumours that Cristiano Ronaldo might not start going through the media centre before the team eventually dropped.
There were plenty of raised eyebrows at his absence from the team, while several reporters have had to abandon the TV screens showing the Morocco-Spain penalty shootout to go and report on the news.
It is also an odd decision to leave Joao Cancelo on the bench so everyone is now racing to their seats to write words - mainly of unanswered questions.
Could this be the night of big upsets?
Spain have just been KNOCKED OUT by Morocco on penalties.

There are eight changes to the Portugal side who dramatically lost to South Korea in their final group match.
Cristiano Ronaldo is only on the bench after Portugal coach Fernando Santos said he "really didn't like" his reaction to being substituted in that last defeat.
Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo is also on the bench.
Antonio Silva, Matheus Nunes, Ruben Neves, Vitinha, Ricardo Horta and Joao Mario all drop out too.
Portugal XI: Costa, Dalot, Pepe, Dias, Guerreiro, Fernandes, Silva, Joao Felix, Carvalho, Otavio, Ramos.
Switzerland boss Murat Yakin makes two changes from their decisive victory over Serbia in their last outing.
Goalkeeper Yann Sommer returns, alongside defender Edilmilson Fernandes, replacing Silvan Widmer.

The Cristiano Ronaldo news is sweeping the media centre here in Lusail and as you can imagine the reaction is shock.
The bottom line for Ronaldo is that both Manchester United and now Portugal appear to have decided they are better off without him.
It’s a stunning fall from grace but he could yet make a big contribution against Switzerland tonight.

Like some of Manchester United's games before the mid-season break, the build up to tonight's last-16 tie with Switzerland has largely been about the Portugal forward.
Coach Fernando Santos was clearly not best pleased with Ronaldo appearing to sulk at being subbed off during the final group game against South Korea.
The outcome of that is he does not start tonight's crucial knockout tie.
