    Nope.

Emi Martinez comes out and claims it with such ease. Could have been catching a frisbee in the back garden.

“We’re just not in the game. We can’t string four passes together. The team’s too stressed,” says Gaston.

“It’s a terrible start. If we can’t get the ball into our possession, we’ll never recover,” says Laura.

“Deschamps will give them a real pep talk. He knows how to do it. It’s our only hope.”

“The French side is too nervous. We need a quick goal,” says Basil.

“The replacements will make a difference, let’s hope so. Though personally I wouldn’t have taken off Giroud,” says Christophe.

Argentina are straight on the front foot and it takes some rapid movement from Hugo Lloris to beat Alexis Mac Allister to the ball in the box.

Not the best sign of improvement from France!

There haven't been any changes. Certainly not from Argentina. For them, it's just a case of repeating the same display.

What have France got in the tank?

This needs to be a heck of a half of football from them if they are going to retain their title.

They have 45 minutes to stage their rescue act against a buoyant and brilliant Argentina...

  15. 'Di Maria on fire'published at 16:07 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2022

    HT: Argentina 2-0 France

    Pablo Zabaleta
Ex-Man City and Argentina defender on BBC One

There are 45 minutes to go but it was fantastic first 45 minutes from Argentina. On the front foot from the first minute in the game, playing good football, high tempo on the ball.

Well done to Scaloni for moving Di Maria to the left as well, he has been on fire for the first 45 minutes. We spoke about how important he was too that team and I am so happy for Di Maria.

  16. 'Terrible from Dembele'published at 16:05 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2022

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC One

It's a penalty for me. You've got to look very closely to spot it but there is definitely contact. He is running at pace.

He is trying desperately to get back. You should never get turned like that. Di Maria's left leg makes the contact and causes him to kick himself. Really good play from Di Maria but terrible from Dembele.

    Rio Ferdinand

Argentina are just bullying France in there. They are far more aggressive, the tenacity, they look hungrier and when they have had the opportunities, they have been absolutely clinical so far.

I think it's fair to say that Olivier Giroud was very, very unhappy to be taken off in that first half (as you would be). The water bottle went down, the seat took a pounding, he was uttering words into a towel held to his mouth.

  20. France in a trancepublished at 16:02 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2022

    Chris Bevan

The Argentina fans are bouncing as their players head down the tunnel. What a performance by them.

The France team disappeared very quickly, although you could argue they never actually turned up. They have played as if they are in a trance so far - whatever their problem is, can it be rectified at half-time?
