  1. YELLOW CARDpublished at 41 mins

    Middlesbrough 1-0 West Brom

Jonny Howson is in the book for a challenge on the halfway line.

The Boro skipper's not impressed but looks like the right call.

  2. Postpublished at 39 mins

    Middlesbrough 1-0 West Brom

Young Wolves loanee Ryan Giles has had spells with Coventry, Rotherham, Cardiff and Blackburn over the past three seasons.

He's used to settling in at new places then and he's doing just that so far.

The 22-year-old looks like a real threat down the Boro left.

    Middlesbrough 1-0 West Brom

    Oh no!

What a goal this would have been!

Middlesbough pass the ball around for an age before one incissive pass from Matt Crooks frees Ryan Giles out on the Boro left.

He sends in a peach of a low cross but Duncan Watmore can't sort his feet and misses it at the back stick.

Big let off for the Baggies.

    Middlesbrough 1-0 West Brom

Middlesbrough think they should have a penalty as Riley McGree goes down in the area under a challenge from Jake Livermore.

Nothing doing and I think it's the right call.

  5. Postpublished at 29 mins

    Middlesbrough 1-0 West Brom

Chuba Akpom looks like a man with a point to prove for Boro.

The ex-Arsenal player spent last season on loan in Greece and is probably only playing today because Marus Forss only joined from Brentford on Thursday.

Akpom assisted Isaiah Jones' opener and has been full of running so far today.

Meanwhile, Boro defender Marc Bola almost sends a volley into the River Tees.

  6. Postpublished at 25 mins

    Middlesbrough 1-0 West Brom

West Brom have not been shy of looking to get crosses into the box.

They have big striker Daryl Dike on the bench as he makes his recovery from a long-term injury.

Feel like they're going to need a presence like that in the middle to make the most of these centres.

  7. Postpublished at 23 mins

    Middlesbrough 1-0 West Brom

Cheap giveaway on the halfway line by Boro and West Brom are up and running.

It stalls somewhat and Karlan Grant's attempted cross hits a Boro player and then hits him in the face and goes out for a goalkick.

  8. Postpublished at 20 mins

    Middlesbrough 1-0 West Brom

Middlesbrough have the ball in the net again but Duncan Watmore is offside and then the ball is turned in from a yard out by Chuba Akpom.

    Who is also offside.

Bright run from John Swift ends with a shot that is blocked by a Boro defender.

Swift has arrived on a free after a fine season with Reading last time out.

  11. Postpublished at 13 mins

    Middlesbrough 1-0 West Brom

Right, what have the Baggies got in response now?

They suffered a miserable second half to last season and Steve Bruce has looked to change things up in a lot of the forward positions.

His men win a corner after Darnell Furlong's cross causes some panic in the Boro rearguard but Zack Steffen punches it away.

It was an easy tap-in. Albion got caught out in numbers, it was an easy cross and two of them could have knocked it in. It was poor defending from Albion.

  13. goal

GOAL: Midlesbrough 1-0 West Brompublished at 17:42 British Summer Time 30 July 2022

    Isaiah Jones (10 mins)

Lift off for the home side!

It felt like the home side were just getting on top and they have the goal to show for it.

Some nice interplay ends with Chuba Akpom sliding a cross across the face of goal where Isaiah Jones shows fine composure to slot in.

You have to give Jed Wallace credit for vision there because he was only just over the halfway line when he hit it.

He saw the keeper off his line, took his chance and it was great skill.

  15. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 7 mins

    Middlesbrough 0-0 West Brom

    Cripes.

What a save that is from Zack Steffen in the home goal.

Jed Wallace looks to shape a cross to the back stick (I think, to be fair, he could have been going for goal).

It's sailing into the far corner of the net but the big American does wonderfully to back pedal and tip it on to the crossbar.

  16. Postpublished at 5 mins

    Middlesbrough 0-0 West Brom

Middlesbrough have been looking to add a striker all season and got their man on Thursday when Marcus Forss joined for an undisclosed fee from Brentford.

The Finland international is just on the bench today though.

Former Arsenal man Chuba Akpom has somewhat surprisingly got the nod up top after spending last season on loan in Greece.

No Marcus Tavernier for the home side as he's in the final stages of completing a transfer to Bournemouth.

Using my INCREDIBLY scientific data collection method (see 17:24 BST post) it looks like you guys think it will be Boro who have the better season this time around.

    We shall see.

  18. KICK-OFFpublished at 17:32 British Summer Time 30 July 2022

    Middlesbrough 0-0 West Brom

After a minute's applause for Boro fans who have died over the past 12 months, the final game of the opening Saturday of the EFL season is under way.

    Let's hope it's a good one!
