  2. CLOSE!published at 15:10 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    Bournemouth 1-0 Aston Villa

Dominic Solanke has a shot parried by Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez before last season's 29-goal striker sees another one blocked by a Villa defender.

Lively start at the Vitality Stadium.

    Tottenham 0-0 Southampton

It's been mostly Spurs pressure in the opening few minutes in north London.

But the biggest problem Southampton's debutant keeper Gavin Bazunu has had came from an errant Jan Bednarek backpass that he just about dealt with.

    Leeds 0-1 Wolves

    Phil Dawkes
    BBC Sport at Elland Road

Well, this has punctured the balloon.

The home crowd at Elland Road have been vociferous in the opening minutes but they've been silenced by that Daniel Podence finish.

Wolves fans may have wondered where the goals would come from in Raul Jimene's absence, but they worked that move well and while not clean, Podence's finish found the net.

Suddenly, there's a nervous tension in the ground.

  5. CLOSE!published at 15:07 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    Bournemouth 1-0 Aston Villa

Villa new boy Diego Carlos flicks on a corner at the near post and it goes across the goalmouth before being bundled behind for another corner.

It's cleared, but moments later Villa striker Danny Ings tests home goalkeeper Mark Travers with a shot from the edge of the box.

    Newcastle 0-0 Nottm Forest

Make that a very bright start from Newcastle.

Allan Saint-Maximin's twisting and turning run has Forest defenders backtracking and he finds Joe Willock, whose shot would have been on target if not for a deflection that took it wide.

    Daniel Podence (six mins)

    Perfect start by Wolves!

Daniel Podence only scored twice all last season but it has taken him just six minutes to open his account for the new campaign.

Leeds are wide open at the back and a cross from the left is nodded down by Hwang Hee-chan to Podence, whose shot into the ground bounces over Illan Meslier and into the net.

Silence around three quarters of Elland Road.

    Leeds 0-0 Wolves

First sight of Patrick Bamford as he scampers after a ball over the top but he's got too much to do with two defenders squeezing him out.

Bamford only made nine league appearances last season because of injuries and Leeds will hope those injury issues are now well behind him.

Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

As soon as Eddie Howe came into the football club, he changed the culture, he changed the environment. You can see what he's trying to build here at Newcastle United.

When they get the fans behind this team, they could become unstoppable. I fancy them to go high up the table into the European places. They've bought well and they'll keep on doing so.

    Newcastle 0-0 Nottm Forest

A bright start from Newcastle who win a corner inside the opening minute at St James' Park but Dan Burn's looping header is easy for Forest keeper Dean Henderson.

New keepers at both ends, of course, with Henderson's fellow England stopper Nick Pope making his debut for Newcastle.

The Magpies have made a late change on the bench - Paul Dummett in for Jamaal Lascelles, who picked up an injury in the warm-up.

    Jefferson Lerma (three mins)

    Wow, Bournemouth lead already!

An early corner by new signing Marcus Tavernier is nodded down by home defender Lloyd Kelly and it bounces out to Jefferson Lerma, who bundles a shot in from eight yards.

What a start to the Cherries' return to the top flight.

What a game for both sides, I can't wait for the kick off. I'm intrigued to see how Nottingham Forest play and how they attack this season.

Newcastle v Nottingham Forest (15:00 BST)

    Alan Shearer
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Newcastle could challenge to be the best of the rest. I think the top six is what it is; if they challenge West Ham or Aston Villa for seventh, eighth, ninth.

They've made some good signings, they've not overspent. I think they need another forward, whether a centre forward or someone who can operate from out to in. I would be really confident of them having a good season. They'll want more of the same from last year; Eddie Howe has done a fantastic job, signed a new contract yesterday.

    Newcastle is buzzing.

Rachel Daly is here. The Harrogate-born full-back has just come out to lap up some well-earned applause following her part in England's triumphant Euro 2022 campaign.

She plays in American with Houston Dash currently but began her career with Leeds. She's certainly not lost that Yorkshire accent.

You've got to love that first game of the season feel - the return of familiar rituals, the anticipation, the hope and the optimism before whatever transpires over the next 90 minutes has a chance to impact that.

Players are walking out onto pitches up and down the country as kick off approaches.

    Here we go.

If you ask every person out there the one team who is almost guaranteed to go down, Bournemouth is at the top of everyone’s list.

That will be very frustrating but from a club perspective it’s a financial thing, it’s about maintaining life in the Premier League and finding the right level of players to bring in.

  19. 'We got a point from a really bad game'published at 14:54 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    FT: Fulham 2-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to BT Sport: "The best thing about the game was the result. We got a point from a really bad game.

"The result was fine, I don't think we deserved more than that. The performance can be massively improved.

"We could have won the game because we had good chances but it was probably a bit too much today."

  20. Wolves need to find some bitepublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    Leeds v Wolves (15:00 BST)

    Phil Dawkes
    BBC Sport at Elland Road

Wolves have had a much quieter summer than Leeds. Nathan Collins is their only new recruit so far, arriving from relegated Burnley to play at the back.

Their bigger concerns are further forward, though. Last season they scored the fewest goals of all the sides who remained in the division. Just 38. It was still enough to help them finish 10th, though, thanks largely to a solid defence.
