  3. 'Penalty is 70-75% in the head'published at 20:28 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    FT: Everton 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Match-winner Jorginho to Sky Sports about his penalty - having seen one famously saved by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford in the Euro 2020 final:

"Of course you think about it, you work in the week, thinking what the keeper might do in that moment to try to save it. So I took the decision and fortunately it was the right one this time.

"For me a penalty is 70-75% in the head, psychology so I thought a lot and fortunately today it went well."

  5. 'We could use fresh input' - Tuchelpublished at 20:26 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    FT Everton 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel to Sky Sports on possible incomings:

"If we can add, we add. We are open to everything and I think we can use new energy and new legs and fresh input to bring us to a new level.

"If not, we will push this team but I think we could use some more input and some more quality. We are on it.

"I don't want to put pressure on us but at the same time I don't want to lower our expectations."

  6. 'We hung in and did what was necessary'published at 20:24 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    FT: Everton 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel to Sky Sports:

"We have struggled in the last seasons to get points here - and we have the points. A win is a win - it's the most important thing for everything but we have to get better.

"We are maybe not at the highest level - we have brought players in but they came in late, pre-season was a bit turbulent but the last week of training was promising.

"Some situations in the first half were quite good and second half I think we had simply not enough movement on the ball - with less movement, there were more ball losses.

"It was a bit of a strange second half without the rhythm from the team, and interruptions, but we hung in and did what was necessary to keep a clean sheet and we go from there."

  7. 'Tiny mistake decided the game'published at 20:22 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    FT: Everton 0-1 Chelsea

    Everton

Everton manager Frank Lampard, speaking to Sky Sports: “I’m frustrated but not in terms of our performance. I thought we were really good. Chelsea want to pick you apart and we never allowed them to - apart from one tiny mistake which decided the game.

“I thought the lads gave everything. Thanks to the fans who turned up before the game. The atmosphere was great doing the game. I thought our lads played their part in that.

“You look at the benches - Chelsea can make changes, but in those forward areas there weren’t that many changes we could make.

“Anthony [Gordon] was generally the focal point, but [the front three] were mobile. I thought they did really well. Of course if you have a number nine, you might score from one of the crosses in the first half.”

On the penalty: I think Chilly’s smart, but I think Doucoure has a bit of his arm. The mistake was getting pulled slightly out of position as a team.”

On Everton's injuries: “It makes it hard. Ben got his injury, we think it’s a small fracture of the fibula. Yerry has an ankle injury we don’t know too much about. They’re not muscle injuries, they’re freak injuries.”

  8. 'The penalty was the only difference'published at 20:18 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    FT: Everton 0-1 Chelsea

    Everton

Everton manager Frank Lampard, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “I thought we played well against a tough opponent. I thought the penalty was the only difference between the teams. One tiny lack of focus and they got their goal. I felt a draw would be a fair result.

“We’ve got no number nine so we had to be constantly mobile. That’s a big ask on the first day of the season. I thought we did it OK today against a team of Chelsea’s level. I thought we created them a lot of problems. I don’t want to criticise the team too much because the mobility was good.

“We want to have a couple more options. We’re all moving in that direction. Dominic [Calvert-Lewin]’s not going to be out forever. We’ve lost Richarlison. One player is being finalised as we speak. I don’t want to stand here and say it’s done, but we’re very close.”

On Ben Godfrey's injury: “It feels like it’s a small facture, lower down. We’re assessing it. It looks like he’s going to be out for a while. We had a bit of that last season unfortunately. We’ll have to get through that.”

On Everton's debutants: “[Nathan Patterson] was confident and positive in his play. He’s going to get a lot better. Tarky was great - calm and confident on the ball and he stood out like he did in pre-season.”

  10. 'We have things to improve'published at 20:12 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    Everton 0-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "A win is a win and this is super important. We played at Everton and we've struggled over recent years to get points here. We have things to improve but this isn't a. surprise. Most of the time I'm happy with the first half, the second we lost too many balls and weren't as dominant. We struggled physically but showed the spirit to get the clean sheet.

"There were some situations nobody could influence like s big injury for an Everton player [Ben Godfrey], the incident in the stands and we created confusion with the substitutions. Some things that maybe occur once in four weeks occurred in one match; there were seven minutes stoppage time first half, 10 in the second. It shows how disrupted the game was for both teams. It won't have been nice to watch."

  11. 'We caused them problems'published at 20:09 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    FT: Everton 0-1 Chelsea

    Everton

Everton defender James Tarkowski, speaking to Sky Sports: “Points are what it’s all about. Early on in the season you want your performances to be up there – that was the case today. We were dynamic and caused them problems.”

On Ben Godfrey's injury: “Fingers crossed it’s not as serious as we hope. It didn’t look great, then losing Yerry [Mina] disjointed us. People have to slot into positions like they did today. We moved around a bit but we still played well.”

On the penalty: “I’m not sure he was tripped up, pushed over or pulled back. If the ref gives it, it’s never going to be turned around but if he doesn’t give it, does it get overturned? Probably not. I didn’t see any clear contact to make him fall over.”

On the coming campaign: “I was excited going into the game. I’ve seen what this team can do. There are exciting times ahead, it showed in the performance today.”

  12. Godfrey and Mina 'out for a while'published at 20:06 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    Everton 0-1 Chelsea

    Everton

Everton boss Frank Lampard has just provided an injury update on Ben Godfrey and Yerry Mina: "It [Godfrey injury] feels like it is a small fracture of his leg. We are assessing that. He will be out for a while, Mina is an ankle injury and could be out for a while.

    "When it rains, it pours."

'So many players didn't look fit'published at 19:42 British Summer Time 6 August 2022

    FT: Everton 0-1 Chelsea

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

It is a shame because Everton have worked so hard to get themselves into a position to do something against the top teams, but the game was so disrupted.

I don't know the reasons or excuses but so many players didn't look fit. Neither team looked particularly good, both will have to play much better to reach their goals.

Chelsea have not improved their team at all over the summer. Sure they've replaced some outgoing players, but have they improved? I would maybe say the opposite.

    Mike

Chelsea have done nothing but throw themselves to the ground in this second half. I'd be worried being a Chelsea fan. They'll get found out if they play like this against better teams

    All over!

Far from a classic but Chelsea kick off the new season with a win at Goodison Park.

Everton ultimately rarely looked liked getting something from the game.

Bit harsh making season long assessments of teams on day one. If that's the case then Liverpool are in trouble too!
