It is interesting times at Southampton. After a tough start and a heavy defeat at Tottenham on the opening day and a poor run-in from Ralph Hasenhuttl's side last season, there was a lot of negativity, a lot of noise, people writing Southampton off.

There was a comeback against Leeds after being two down, and then the victory over Leicester when again they came from behind.

Today is set up really nicely.

Erik ten Hag's Manchester United reign is under way. And in the best way possible.

After a miserable opening two weeks of his maiden season, Old Trafford was treated to victory over Liverpool. If any United manager could choose an opponent to get their first win against, it would be them.

Dropping captain Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo was risky and invited further criticism and doubt. But Raphael Varane enjoyed his best United game, Lisandro Martinez silenced his critics, and the attack gelled better than it has all season.

Casemiro's arrival is the fourth of the summer. But now Ten Hag needs more reinforcements, particularly in attack, and United must hand him the required tools in the final days of the transfer window.

I am very, very surprised at what I have seen from Liverpool so far this season. They look fatigued and off the pace completely.

They play at such a high intensity and that's what we are so used to judging them by. When they dip from what we have seen them do under Jurgen Klopp, that is when the criticism comes.

No-one could cope with the intensity they played with last season and the season before. When they drop below those standards, that's when people like us say 'there must be something wrong'.

But I do feel that the players they have had missing this season has played a part.

Southampton midfielder James Ward Prowse, speaking to BT Sport: "I want to improve year on year and I have done the last couple of years.

"I will be trying to get 10 goals or above this season, maybe more goals from open play. Playing the way we have been playing gives me more licence to get into the box.

"Against any good team you have to be aggressive and that's a big factor in the way we play and you have to identify their threats."

Sadio Mane is a big miss for Liverpool. I said it when they let him go. I didn't understand that. Maybe he wanted to leave but for me he is a big miss.

Not only for goals but there are certain players you have in your team that bring that extra element.

They might not be scoring or creating, but you just need them out there.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to BT Sport, is asked about his team selection, which sees an unchanged line-up and with both Casemiro and Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench.

He says: "We have a squad that's quite competitive, it's always difficult decisions. We had a really good performance on Monday then we stick to it.

"It's also to give Casemiro the time. He has not played 90 minutes, he has to adapt to England and to Manchester United and it's to give him time to integrate into the team."

    Darren Fletcher
BBC Radio 5 Live The Friday Football Social

The schedule we are about to see between now and the World Cup, it will essentially be a Championship season in terms of fixtures.

If you are in Europe, it means from Saturday until 12 November - when the Premier League breaks for the World Cup - teams will play every midweek.

They will either play a Premier League match, a European match or a Carabao Cup match every midweek between now and 12 November.

The one exception is the international break at the end of September when all those players playing in the Champions League or Europa League go off to play for their respective countries.

If you are a player, you are going to play weekend, midweek, weekend right the way through to November. Then you are going to go and play World Cup warm-up matches, then play the World Cup and then come back to play in the Premier League on Boxing Day.

I don't know how the respective coaches and players are going to deal with this. It is absolutely relentless.

It’s been a good week or so for Southampton, and there’s relief from fans and the manager that the season is truly up and running.

For a team notoriously bad at holding on to leads, it’s been great to see Saints come from behind against Leeds and Leicester to pick up four points and a crucial first win - and the character the players have shown bodes well, especially from a dressing room that was apparently not pulling for the manager two weeks ago.

Ralph Hasenhuttl will know there’s a long way to go, but it will be a relief he got that response from his players, and now maybe everyone can focus on the football and not the distractions.

Now they need to make sure they perform well in huge back-to-back home games against Manchester United and Chelsea.

A new buoyant mood surrounds Manchester United after their thrilling victory over Liverpool at a vibrant Old Trafford on Monday.

Erik ten Hag’s first win as manager showed United several times removed from the hapless team that had been outplayed by Brighton and Brentford in their first two Premier League games.

United were energetic, intense and defensively secure after Ten Hag dropped captain Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Surely they will still be sidelined once more at St Mary’s and Ten Hag will have new marquee signing Casemiro available for his debut after his £60m move from Real Madrid.

The trick for United now is to repeat the performance against Liverpool because the questions asked of this under-achieving squad will not go away after one win, no matter how significant, if it is not backed up by a display that proves they were not just rising to a single occasion.

Southampton will provide a real test after winning at Leicester City and will provide intensity of their own that United must not just match, but better.

United deserved all the praise that came their way on Monday – but they must now do it again at Southampton and beyond.
