  1. 'I think I could teach someone that'published at 22:58 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    Gary Lineker
Ex-England striker on BBC Match of the Day

Pep says you can’t teach that. I think you can. I think I could teach someone that. I see strikers who don’t do the right things. Goalscoring is about mathematics, probability. If you keep making runs into certain areas, eventually it'll come to you.

  2. 'Haaland is the complete striker'published at 22:55 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    Man City 6-0 Nottingham Forest

    Ashley Williams
Former Wales captain on Match of the Day

If I was playing against Erling Haaland now I’d just go for the red card tactic early doors.

It’s a real problem for the [rest of the] league. He’s the complete striker. He’s outmuscled Joe Worrall, who’s a big lad.

His movement, he’s always lively in the box. For a defender he's so difficult to play against. You have to have the perfect game against him and have some help from your partner. He occupies two defenders. He’s got it all - pace, power, awareness. He’s got a knack for scoring goals. I'm excited to watch him this season.

  4. 'Last-minute goal a heartbreaker'published at 22:50 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    FT: Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to BT Sport: "I am really proud of the players, proud of the commitment but that is very painful.

"When you are in the lead here naturally it becomes a different game. You have to defend very well, I don't think they had many clear cut chances but that last minute goal was a heartbreaker.

"He looked really good. We didn't anticipate him playing the whole game. He picked up a knock, a dead leg, so we wanted to protect him but he looks a special player.

"Everybody did well. I can't fault anybody. We have given everything to every game so far, there was no gamesmanship from our side there were just tired bodies."

  5. 'Now everyone has to keep believing'published at 22:46 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    FT: Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BBC Sport: "Football can go in both directions but tonight it went in the right one, a perfect end of the game."

Newcastle brought it on themselves, with the time taken out of the game was added on, it came back to get them in the end? "I am really happy that everyone saw it tonight. It was hard to take. It was a difficult game anyway, Newcastle invested a lot to close us down. They were close to getting pretty much everything for it. Of course everyone wants to see a football game and when it is interrupted that often it is not nice for anybody.

"The only chance we have, not just for this game but in general, the referee has to pick earlier yellow cards. I don't know when the kicking the ball away stopped being a yellow card. When did this rule die?

"I had no idea if that tonight it was on purpose or if they players really had to go down because slightly injured. I don't know."

How do you stop having to come from behind? "By scoring first. We have a lot of space for improvement, definitely. It was well played by Newcastle I have to say. It is still early in the season. You have to fight your way through.

"I am not sure everyone in the stadium kept believing but from now on we have to. What a wonderful goal from the little one. He is in a great moment.

"Harvey Elliott was the best player on the pitch, without a shadow of a doubt. It was nice to see he picks up from where he was before the bad injury. Fabio, what a boy. What a player. I am pretty sure he will want to have that feeling more often and I am pretty sure if he keeps working he will have it more."

In the end, the resilience and the Anfield roar forced Newcastle into that mistake. Newcastle came here and gave everything but it still wasn't enough.

Neil: Regardless of what Newcastle may have done during the game, the referee signalled 5 mins of extra time, then played until 97.30 when Liverpool scored. How on earth did he come up with an extra two and half minutes in that five minutes?? Did his watch stop??

Malcolm: As a neutral, I was fuming when the Liverpool game continued after 5 extra minutes. I saw no time-wasting in that additional time. The big teams aren't playing the same game as the rest of us....

Jon: I think it's plainly obvious that more than 5 mins was played because the goalie spent so much time getting treatment during injury time. Plus, it's always been 'minimum of'.

Anon: Newcastle time wasting all evening, 5 minutes added on, scored in 98th minute, sweet, sweet justice. YNWA.

  8. 'Luiz corner a special talent'published at 22:39 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    FT: Arsenal 2-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard to BBC Sport: “Our technical level in the first half was really poor. We worked ever so hard to stay with Arsenal.

“We were better in the second half, had some interesting breakaways and scored a wonderful goal to get ourselves into a wonderful position and then we made a fundamental error to concede so soon."

On Douglas Luiz’s goal: "It is a special talent, it is not a fluke. We need moments of quality and class and Douglas provided that and got us where we wanted to be. But all the hard work we put in to get back in the game, we lose it so quickly and that is the time you need leadership on the pitch to get you through.”

Villa have a side of decent players who cannot play well together. Only one person to blame for that - Michael Beale. His results for QPR show the influence he had. Gerrard has been found out and it's a total disaster for him. Not coming over to the fans who paid their money to travel and support the team they love is the nail in the coffin for me.

  10. 'We'll remember this for years and years'published at 22:35 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    FT: Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BT Sport: "The perfect moment to win this game because it was a difficult game, very passionate, aggressive defending.

"It's difficult to pick up the rhythm from a game where everything clicked immediately and you find yourself in situations where it isn't clicking immediately.

"Even before we were 1-0 down we looked in situations a little bit desperate. We had to force ourselves to keep calm a little more and keep going. In the end we forced it and what a wonderful goal from the birthday kid.

"This is the best way to win a football game. I think that we scored after 90+8 is the perfect response. I'm really happy about that."

On Carvalho: "For him it's his second goal. Fantastic boy, we changed pretty much everything, very offensive orientated but he can also play there. If a boy is as good as he is then he needs the moment."

Needed the win to keep the momentum going? "It's massive, massive we will remember it for years and years. We had once a 3-2 at Newcastle where Divock Origi scored late. I’m not 100% sure they all believed until the end but from now on we have to as we showed again it is possible."

Funny seeing all these Geordie tears. If Pope hadn't have been time wasting in extra time, the ref wouldn't have extended extra time. Only got yourselves to blame for pathetic gamesmanship, 3 players down with cramp at 77mins. Play with fire and you get burnt.

    Nick, Leeds

So gratifying that all of the players going down with "cramp", "back problems" and myriad other phantom injuries, players kicking the ball away and fans throwing second balls onto the pitch or not returning the ball is the reason for the excessive time added on and ultimately why their team lost tonight. Poetic justice served.

  12. 'Our strikers have incredible sense of smell for goals'published at 22:31 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

FT: Manchester City 6-0 Nottingham Forest

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to his post-match press conference: "What he [Haaland] has done in Germany, he has done here. First ball contact, first goal. We have incredible strikers, incredible sense of smell for goals.

"Of course Haaland is stoppable if we don't play good. The reason we always try to play well is to give our attacking players a chance to score goals.

"What Haaland wants is to win titles. Knowing him, he would not be happy to break records if we don't win titles.

"Julian, we have seen from day one how he behaves, we have incredible opinions of him. The scouting department told me about him for a year and a half, he is special. Now we are enjoying having two strikers with incredible quality.

"Sergio [Aguero] is a legend, no-one can break his position in the hearts of Man City fans. But Erling has the quality to be there. It is not about him or Sergio, what he [Aguero] has done for this club is incredible.

"The numbers speak for themselves, we are prolific [19 goals in five games]. Against Newcastle we could not control transitions, against Palace we could not control set pieces. We controlled these today.

"These two players are so young, they want to prove themselves to the world, in the toughest league in the world. They have the ambition to win titles, to score goals. This gives extra energy for all of us. Step by step, game by game, we will be getting better."

  13. 'The fans kept us going'published at 22:29 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    FT: Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle

    Liverpool

Liverpool matchwinner Fabio Carvalho, speaking to BT Sport: "I was just in the right area. Look at this, these fans they kept us going.

"Without the fans this wouldn't be possible. We just kept going and a well deserved three points. It was a bit frustrating at times, they had players going down but let's not talk about them, let's talk about us.

"Hopefully we can build on this. We have to keep going and keep working and more wins will come."

Pav: Don't see Gerrard turning this around. And that's the critical test - not just looking at current performance but whether there's any prospect of things improving. Seems to have lost the squad, the fans, and any sense of performance.

  15. 'A sickener'published at 22:24 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    FT: Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Sport: "That's the pain of football. That's the horrible side of it when your team has given everything. It is a sickener for us but it is part of the game. We just didn't deal with the corner.

"I thought we played well in the first half. Naturally when you are 1-0 up here you are not going to be the dominant team and you are going to have to withstand pressure. It is difficult to defend against this team."

On Isak: "He looked a threat and his pace was a key outlet for us. There were a number of really good performances.

"The performance and the commitment of the players was second to none. I think we are getting closer, but you need points."

  16. Gerrard has concerns over his Villa futurepublished at 22:22 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    FT: Arsenal 2-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard to BT Sport: "We worked ever so hard to stay in the game and stay with Arsenal. I think technically they were a level above for 45 minutes. Because of our technical level we kept giving the ball back.

“We improved a lot second half and had some really interesting breakaways. Douglas provides a bit of magic to get us back in the game. Again we concede two goals because we didn’t get the detail of our defending right.

"Of course the keeper [Emiliano Martínez] could have done a bit better for us for the second one but he kept us in the game for large parts of it as well. At the moment we a struggling to keep clean sheets and we need to get back to basics.

Asked if he has any concerns about his future as manager: "Of course I do. I am really honest and critical of myself. If I stood here and said I wasn't concerned I think you'd look at me as though I was from a different planet."

Newcastle have paid tonight for some petty blatant time wasting. Referees adding more time on than they have in the past looks like it's working.

    CH, Warwick

That's what you get for blatant time wasting. Liverpool fully deserved that win.

    Mike, Chester

Newcastle were excellent and probably deserved a point but a 98th minute goal is karma for their time-wasting from minute 1.

    FT: Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle goalscorer Alexander Isak, speaking to BT Sport: "I was thinking it was going to be a dream debut. It has been a hectic few days. I am happy I got my first minutes today.

"You can see the boys, very disappointed but we have another game right around the corner and I think we have to use this feeling we are feeling as energy for the next game."

  19. 'Regret we didn't score four or five'published at 22:17 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    FT: Arsenal 2-1 Aston Villa

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager boss Mikel Arteta speaking to BBC Sport: "I was very pleased especially in the first half. We were really dominant and at it and created chance after chance.

"The regret is that we didn't score four or five. In this league you never get two halves exactly the same and I think we responded really well in key moments to show character and resilience to win the game.

"It is about cohesion, understanding and chemistry. You can see the way they link and threaten.

"The atmosphere is incredibly helpful for the team. We are winning games and deserving to but there are still a lot of things we can do better."
