  1. 'There was a different energy to us'published at 21:51 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

    West Ham United

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice to BT Sport: "A positive point. We were probably the better team on the night. We were much improved from the start of the season and looked a threat against a top team.

"It's a game of margins. It was good to get a point and now go onto the next one.

"Tonight there was a different energy to us. We were up for it. A London derby, we know what it means to the fans.

"We bought in eight or nine top players this summer. It won't click straight away. But we're starting to gel a bit more. We need to keep working hard."

Liverpool's tails are up. They're taking charge of this game and Newcastle are just defending for their lives.

  3. YELLOW CARDpublished at 21:50 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle

And another yellow card for Newcastle as Kieran Trippier trips Luis Diaz. James Milner chips the ball cleverly into the box for Fabio Carvalho, who controls well but then scuffs his shot wide.

The fourth official's board goes up and there's five minutes added on.

  4. 'It has nothing to do with the manager'published at 21:48 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    FT: Arsenal 2-1 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa captain John McGinn: “A bit of naivety. We were standoffish in the first half. Douglas [Luiz] scored a great goal and we were right back in it and then we make the same mistakes over and over again and we were punished. It is about us as players taking responsibility and being more streetwise. We need to start getting results and we are all aware of it

“It would be a bigger problem if the effort wasn’t there. There were a lot more bodies on the line. But we seem to be weak when we score a goal. It is something we have addressed after the game and something we need to improve if we are to take the club where we want to.

“Douglas is super talented and practices those corners all the time. It was no fluke again tonight. Tough to take to concede a goal so soon after.

“If you don’t perform you get criticism and you can either go into your shell and worry or you can puff your chest out and try to do something about it. It is not going to turn overnight.

“It has nothing to do with the manager. Players are put out to do jobs and if we don’t perform those jobs it is our responsibility. Arsenal were in a similar position last season and stuck with it and got it right.”

  5. YELLOW CARDpublished at 21:48 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

Into the 87th minute and, surprisingly, we have our first yellow card of the game as Jamaal Lascelles is booked for stopping Harvey Elliott from getting away.

Dom: Milner even being on this pitch is an embarrassment for a team with so called title credentials. I wonder what the net spend brigade will say about our lack of funding in midfield.

Dan: On tonight's evidence. Top 4 for Liverpool is going to be challenging. Top 6 for Newcastle highly likely.

Paul: Obviously we miss Mane, but this is the sort of game we miss Origi turning up with a late goal off the bench.

  7. 'Erling and me fit together'published at 21:46 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

FT: Manchester City 6-0 Nottingham Forest

    Manchester City

Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez to Match of the Day, via a translator: "Obviously I'm very happy for the team performance, and for my two goals, and getting that reception from all the fans.

"I think it's not me or Erling, we can play together in the starting XI. We fit together, which is good for the team.

"Some things are similar from Argentina, like the ball pressing, but the Premier League is faster, I have to adapt to that. My team-mates help me and I am super grateful for that."

When exactly does this new time wasting rule kick in? Do we have to just wait until the 90th minute then the cards come out? Newcastle have been time wasting since the first minute and should have had multiple yellows by now.
