  1. 'In England they have to learn to use VAR in right way'published at 22:14 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    FT: West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte tells BT Sport: "I think that maybe we deserved a bit more than a draw but at the end they also had a chance to score and [we'd] lose the game. It is not easy to play against West Ham, a physical team and strong. They play long ball and you have to pay attention, we did well at set-pieces, moved the ball well and created opportunities to score. We can do much better because I always like to tell my players the details at the final result. Instead of winning, you have to speak about the draw."

On the decision to overturn Aaron Cresswell's handball: "Honestly, at the end of the first half, I spoke with the referee and told him 'you have taken the right decision'. It is incredible that VAR looked again, called the referee, he can see it was the right decision and the call from VAR was strange. I can tell only that the referee has taken the right decision. Usually the VAR calls when the call is not right.

"In England they have to learn much more to use the VAR in the right way. You have to study very well and be more accurate. If there is VAR, you have to utilise it in the right way or accept the decision of the referee. If you have a TV then you have time to see. It is difficult not only for me but every coach.

"We started the season very well, we are unbeaten and we play five games and three away. In a difficult place like West Ham, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest, we are doing well and trying to improve. Now we have another game to prepare in two days against Newcastle then we think about the Champions League."

Sion: I don't ever want to hear a Liverpool fan moan about "Fergie time" again...nonsense timekeeping.

Rob: Liverpool couldn't strengthen the midfield because they just bought the referees... 98th minute? Come on.

Callum: 9 minutes of additional time when 5 is added. Absolute robbery. Official was woefully spineless against Klopp's tantrums all night. Disgraceful.

Garreth: Of course the referee added on 8 minutes after just 5 minutes added time. Why do the so called big clubs always get more time added when they're not ahead? Liverpool so lucky to get 3 points there.

  3. 'We are still integrating players'published at 22:09 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

    West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes to BT Sport: "It was a good point. Maybe a missed opportunity. In the second half we made two or three chances to win it.

"Tottenham played well tonight and made it hard for us. A decent point. I can't complain."

On new signing Lucas Paqueta: "We monitored him all summer. For most of the summer it didn’t look likely. It was great for us. We needed someone in the number 10 role who can create opportunities. He didn’t disappoint today in his short cameo. I’m looking forward to getting him trained and used to us and hopefully he can make a big difference."

"We didn’t start the game well tonight. They caused us a problem.

"I thought tonight [overall] we created good chances. We scored a goal good.

"The players are working really hard. We are a little bit behind where we were last season.

"It's been a really long window. The board have been really good and helped me get a lot of talented players. We are still integrating players. Hopefully now with Lucas coming in we can start to build and get some positive results."

On how long it will take them to gel: "I’d love to say only a couple of weeks but it’ll probably take longer for players to get used to each other and start to develop."

Loz: The most beautiful thing about that goal is that the game would've been over had the Newcastle players not feigned injury to waste time.

John: Justice, because of all the gamesmanship and time wasting by Newcastle.

Jack: Just think, if Newcastle hadn't wasted so much time the match would have already been over - karma really.

James: I guess Newcastle will wish they hadn't wasted so much time now.

  6. 'First half was one of best we've played'published at 22:02 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    FT: Arsenal 2-1 Aston Villa

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager boss Mikel Arteta speaking to BT Sport: "I'm really happy with the result. It's so tough to win in this league.

"The first half was probably one of the best we have played. We could have scored three, four, five. We didn't kill the game and then in this league, the game is alive.

"In the second half, obviously, the game was a fight. They really stretch you, they play really directly, there are a lot of second balls, actions, fouls and it became a little bit of a transitional game where you don't finish the actions when you have spaces to attack and they're going to come at you.

"Without really allowing anything to them - one corner - we conceded a goal and then it's game on again. But the team reacted again incredibly well and I think we deserved to win the game."

In the end it was just too much for Newcastle, they couldn't hang on for the rest of the game. Liverpool kept coming and something had to give and it did. Fabio Carvalho off the bench and he gets the goal. So pleased for the young man.

The Newcastle bench was fuming given there were five minutes added on at the end.

For Liverpool's fans and players, however, it is party time.

  9. 'Haaland is strong in all departments'published at 22:00 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

FT: Manchester City 6-0 Nottingham Forest

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to BT Sport: "Really good tonight. The talent we have in our strikers, it was a really good game.

"I know Erling is happy scoring goals, but what he wants is to win. If he breaks records but we don't win, he won't be happy.

"He's strong in all departments, but especially around the box, his finishing, and his work ethic is so great.

"Alvarez has come from another continent, we see him every day, his work ethic. Being a nice guy pays off, there is not one person in the locker room not happy for his two goals."

Guardiola to Match of the Day: "Julian and Erling have a special sense for the goal, it is difficult to buy or teach. The two goals from Julian are amazing, and Erling's mentality is contagious for our team.

On Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji: "He is not signed yet, but we are trying."

Liverpool always seem to find a way at home. They never give up. It doesn't matter what minute it is. The fans were screaming to get it into the box and look what they get. All three points.

That is unbelievable! The fans have scored that goal, they were telling the players to get the ball forward. Fabio Carvalho gets the winner for Liverpool. His strike is in off the bar from four yards. Newcastle fans have got nothing to say.

    Fabio Carvalho (98 mins)

    WINNER!

Fabio Carvalho snatches all three points with the last kick of the game as Newcastle can't clear a corner and the youngster hooks home a volley.

What drama, what a moment for Carvalho.

At the other end, Dan Burn superbly denies Mo Salah.

Anyone else fed up of the Forest signings bashing? They came up using a bunch of loanees and pretty much needed to buy a new team. If they manage to stay up they'll probably be there for the long haul and if they go down, they'll have a good base of a squad, parachute payments and likely come straight back up. Either way it's a fun ride.

  16. 'We were naive'published at 21:55 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

FT: Manchester City 6-0 Nottingham Forest

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper to BT Sport: "I have to say, first and foremost, Man City are an incredible team. You have to be more than perfect to succeed against them.

"We were naive with the goals in the first half, which made it even tougher. The first and third were from set-pieces, the second we let them into our box too easy.

"At half-time I just asked the boys not to give up, and we didn't. But again, there were goals in the second half we could do much better with.

"Tough night, supporters were amazing, thank you to them. What we have to do now is draw a line underneath it, and we get ready for Saturday.

"I'm glad the game is out the way, maybe other than Liverpool away it's the toughest challenge you'll face. We had to be perfect to get a result, and we weren't."

  19. 'They showed incredible bravery'published at 21:52 British Summer Time 31 August 2022

    FT: Bournemouth 0-0 Wolves

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth interim manager Gary O'Neil to BT Sport: "I couldn't be prouder of what the lads put in, from where they were last weekend.

"They showed incredible bravery and determination. We had a few issues with players, knocks and things that we had to juggle around. Wolves are a good side and caused us problems. We had some good moments when we could have nicked something.

"Full credit to the lads and the fans, who could tell that the boys were giving everything and out on their feet. They managed to pull us over the line.

"I said to the boys, 'what a chance to show resilience and togetherness at a difficult time.' It gives you a chance in every game. That's what we built our foundation from and it can't just be today.

"I enjoyed the first 10 minutes, maybe, and then when it got a bit messy, I didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped.

"I set off on a journey of coaching to be a football manager. Did I expect it to come at this level? No. We'll roll with it until I'm told further."
