I think one of the biggest issues with VAR is that usually the manager that the TERRIBLE decision goes for never comes out and disagrees with it, even though the games over and points are in the bag. So in the FAs eyes they must believe that the top managers still agree with our VAR decisions.

Luiz playing very well for Villa. Good move to play him today from Gerrard. Looked a tighter group so far. Would like to see Archer given a good half hour.

    Stephen, Birmingham

No panic. City are a second-half team. Probably help if Villa were 2-0 up though.

  9. 'The best penalty-taker in the world'published at 18:27 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    FT: Brentford 5-2 Leeds

Brentford boss Thomas Frank, speaking to Match of the Day about hat-trick hero Ivan Toney: "Normally he's not allowed to shoot from outside the penalty area. Today, again, a penalty from the best penalty-taker in the world - I know those are big words but I just say what I see during the week, how he does it. He's so cool and composed and he's got a strategy for it.

"The free-kick - I must say, that's decent, a brilliant one. The last one is brilliant, so composed. Instead of smashing it or side-footing it, just to chip it over."

On his tactics: "Last year, we struggled a bit with defensive transitions. It's something we didn't create enough from and we've been focusing on. Leeds are a very good team and very difficult to play against with so many good players between the lines. We knew that gave some space away behind them and we tried to exploit that."

On Leeds boss Marsch demanding a penalty and being sent off: "I trust VAR and the refs to take a decision on that one. I haven't seen the penalty decision [not to award Leeds a spot kick] back. I saw our own one back after the game and it's a clear penalty. There are so many emotions in this job - I am not the calmest guy. I am calm and then I explode. I had that after the game against Wolves.

"I understand it's difficult to try to control emotions but we have to try to do it."

  10. Villa fighting hard to deny Man Citypublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Aston Villa 0-0 Man City

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Villa Park

A half without a single shot on target and Steven Gerrard will be pleased with the fight and determination his Aston Villa side are showing as they're battling hard to keep the champions at bay.

Kyle Walker had the best chance of the first half but showed a lack of composure when faced with only Emiliano Martinez to beat and wastefully shot wide after only four minutes.

Erling Haaland, with nine goals in his first five matches, has only touched the ball 10 times, while Villa are looking to spring on the counter attack and only good defending from John Stones denied Ollie Watkins late on.

But there will be absolutely no panic from Manchester City, who have dominated possession. This could be an occasion where this game is won from the bench, with Riyad Mahrez, Julian Alvarez and ex-Villa hero Jack Grealish all options for the visitors, while Philippe Coutinho and Danny Ings will be hoping to get a chance to make an impact for the hosts.

Aston Villa felt their way in and showed a couple of little sparks. It was Ashley Young making that tackle - it got everybody up. All of a sudden the Villa players commit, drive forward and the belief was there.

Manchester City should have been ahead, but they weren't, and that gave Aston Villa the confidence to come back into it.

Thomas Chery: Ashley Young is such a professional and example for young aspiring professional football players. As ready and fit as anyone can be and well in the game against some of the best players on earth!!

Jon Evans: Villa kept shape well in that half but didn't look like they had to work that hard, even though City have dominated the ball. Hopefully City's tempo doesn't pick up in the second half and maybe Villa have a chance.

  13. 'I feel there's disrespect'published at 18:26 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    FT: Brentford 5-2 Leeds

    MarschImage source, Getty

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, speaking to Match of the Day: "I said last week that I like our team and that doesn't change. We have an incredible mentality and it's now really about getting a little smarter and understanding how to limit what the opponent wants to accomplish on the day and make sure the game is tilted more in our direction.

"We have a good group - we know that. We have work to do and we're going to keep pushing forward."

On his sending off: "I was really calm when they gave a penalty for a play that I didn't think was a penalty. It's called 'clear and obvious' - and, for me, it wasn't clear and obvious. The ruling on the pitch was 'no penalty'. For our [penalty claim], it was clear and obvious.

"If you give one soft VAR penalty decision, it's just an easy thing to do to say it's fair and within the laws of the game to give another, when it's also a more clear penalty. But we didn't get that, and that's what the frustration is.

"When you don't get the behaviour that you think you should get, you have to decide what to do. I can have more discipline and our team can also have more discipline in these moments, but I also have to think about how to discuss these things. I don't know if it's with the league or other referees, because things I was told at manager meetings before the start of the season aren't happening.

"That's really the source of the frustration. I was calm all the time before there's an egregious act for me. I don't ever want to get tossed and I don't want to show disrespect to referees but, when I feel there's disrespect going in the other direction, I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do right now."

Phil Foden is playing more regularly but in wide positions, not in the number eight slot that you felt he would be when he was bursting on the scene for Manchester City and England.

He is enjoying his football, he is starting to drift in more, showing that energy, and I have seen him demanding the ball from his team-mates.

He is developing and coming of age. A wonderful player and a great talent - where will he continue to play as he develops further as a player.

  15. 'We need to celebrate every win'published at 18:25 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    FT: Brentford 5-2 Leeds

Brentford boss Thomas Frank, speaking to Match of the Day: "It felt much better to be ahead - it's a better position to be in, definitely. Leeds edged the first half in terms of performance - they looked a little bit better on the eye and caused us problems in the final third, without us giving anything away.

"But in both boxes we were very good - defensively in the first half, and at the other end we scored two goals and had two big chances. That's a very big threat.

"In the second half, I really think we gave too much away. But on counter-attacks and creating chances - wow, we are such a threat going forward.

"When you win 5-2 in only our second season in the Premier League, we need to celebrate every win. It was well-deserved but we need to work on the defensive side."

  16. 'We have to learn'published at 18:24 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    FT: Brentford 5-2 Leeds

    MarschImage source, Getty Images

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch, speaking to Match of the Day: "We're disappointed and frustrated that we gave away too many easy chances and goals and made too many mistakes. But we also showed our character in some moments and also got ourselves back in the game.

"We have to learn from these situations, especially when you play away from home. We talked before the match about Brentford being a smart team who know how to play to their strengths. We knew we had to limit their set-piece opportunities and chances to play on the counter.

"We didn't do enough of that today and it wound up costing us."

  17. 'Delighted for the performance'published at 18:23 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    FT: Tottenham 2-1 Fulham

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte speaking to BT Sport:

"Today we played a really good game. In this type of game you need to become killer and to close the game because we have seen if you keep the game open it can happen when your opponent score and you finish the game with worries. Two goals and some offside, but I'm delighted for the performance, we have seen positive things, we have to recover well and prepare ourselves for the Champions League this week.

"I think the final result, we deserved much more for the chances we created but at the same time, congratulations to Fulham because they showed a really good team but I'm happy because we got the three points."

On Richarlison: "Not bad - we are talking about another player who came into our team quickly, he can play all three positions in the front. He's a really good option for us. Today with three strikers they worked really well. If they work in this way they can play together."

On Son Heung-min: "He has to be calm because today the performance was good, he's important for us, the most important thing is to get three points, for sure he can have the personal satisfaction to score this season.

On Champions League: "We got Champions League last season and we did a good job with the team, now we want to enjoy it. We know how important it is to start well and now the players have to rest and recover and be ready for the game on Wednesday because we want to try to start well."

  18. 'I thought he would say it is a goal'published at 18:21 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    FT: Chelsea 2-1 West Ham

    West Ham United

West Ham boss David Moyes, speaking to Match of the Day: "It was a scandalous decision, incredible - the goalkeeper spills it about five yards, acts because he cannot recover the ball. The referee gave it and I don't know who sent him from VAR, but I always thought he would say it is a goal once he went to the screen.

"I have seen it from all angles and find it incredibly difficult to see how that is chalked off. I don't know who in VAR sent him there.

"We are maybe not at our fluid best yet but we are showing a resilience, we are building a new team at the moment and are starting to do the basics well.

"We should have got a draw, it might have been a fair result, I don't think in the end we deserved to lose the game. We didn't lose that one today, we got ourselves back."

  19. 'Our first half was not good enough'published at 18:19 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    FT: Tottenham 2-1 Fulham

    Fulham

Fulham boss Marco Silva speaking to BT Sport: "Tottenham deserved three points, our first half was not good enough, we didn't get to our standards. On the ball we were not at our level, even without high pressure from Tottenham we took many wrong decisions on the ball first half.

"We gave the ball away easy many times and for me that was the main thing of the first half because doing better on the ball we would control the game better and take more decisions and put them under pressure as well and we didn't do that. After the injury of Robinson that created a different scenario for us and we had to adapt. We had much more courage in the second half and tried to match them, we had some problems in our pressure definitely but we were more aggressive.

"Not just because we lost the ball in an important decision it was our reaction after. The way we like to play is to take risks but our reaction has to be different.

"We missed Robinson on and off the ball. The way they scored the second goal they created problems for us.

"I wanted a reaction, I expected to see that after half-time. I didn't see that after 10-15 minutes in the second half so I decided to change something.

"We didn't get our standards, we have to improve on the ball, there is a lot of room for us to improve. We will do it, we need more time to work with the players. It wasn't our best afternoon, but we tried to get the equaliser until the last minute."

  20. 'It was a clear foul'published at 18:18 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    FT: Newcastle 0-0 Crystal Palace

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira, speaking to BBC Sport: "I think both goalkeepers were really good today. I believe Vicente's best game since I was here. We needed a big performance from him and we had it today. He is terrific and has the experience. We needed to defend well and we did that.

"When you come here you know it will be difficult. We managed there dangerous players good and we had our chances. The keeper made good saves. If you look overall at the chances made a draw is a fair result.

"Even in the last third, our decision making was not that good. We did not make the right decision and this is something we need to improve. But overall I am happy with the attitude."

"You need to perform and be consistent. Looking at what we produce game after game. There is a lot to take form that. If we keep fighting for each other and having the right spirit we will score goals and win football matches.

On Newcastle's disallowed goal: "Rightly so. It was a clear foul and if it wasn't the keeper gets the ball in his hands. The referee makes the right decision."
