Jon Evans: The fact is, shape has been much better in this game, particularly in the middle of the pitch. Hope Gerrard learns something from that.

Great goal. Best of the match so far. Come on Villa!

    Dave, Dunblane

Game management is key now for Villa. Do it wisely and not like Newcastle did it against Liverpool. Silly time wasting will lead to more stoppage time and inevitably more Halaand goals.

That's a shame. The whistle goes for offside just before Philippe Coutinho curls a screamer into the top corner, via the inside of the woodwork from 25 yards out.

A deafening roar and Aston Villa have snatched an equaliser. Jacob Ramsey, who should have done better with a counter-attack but produced a heavy touch, plays a square pass and Leon Bailey hits it first time into the roof of the net with a super hit.

What a result this would be for Aston Villa, although they will be weary of conceding quickly after equalising just as they did against Arsenal on Wednesday.

Great noise around Villa Park. Can either side find a winner in the last 15 minutes or so? It's set up perfectly.

Emiliano Martinez looks uncomfortable but he's going to play on. Villa do have a proper sub keeper in Robin Olsen.

Wow - what a finish. The stadium all around us erupts and rightly so. They are back in this game. Leon Bailey comes across inside the left foot, hits it into the top corner giving Ederson no chance.

I was just about to say City need a second goal to make this safe and then...

That finish, under that pressure, travelling so quickly. I know it is Kevin de Bruyne, we have to be slightly critical and he will be disappointed, but it was a tough one.

  17. The missing piece in the puzzle?published at 18:59 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Aston Villa 0-1 Man City

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Villa Park

Earlier this afternoon the Villa supporters sang "champions of Europe, you'll never sing that" at the Manchester City fans - a reference to Villa's European Cup success 40 years ago.

City lost in the Champions League final two years ago to Chelsea but is Erling Haaland the missing piece of the jigsaw? After being contained and dealt with in the first half, he has come alive in the second.

He's scored one, had another two shots saved by Emiliano Martinez and won a free-kick just outside the edge of the area, which Kevin de Bruyne bounced off the bar.

City begin their Champions League campaign with an away game against Sevilla on Tuesday so Pep Guardiola will be hoping his side can wrap this game up and then think about saving legs for midweek.

Villa will still think they can get something, and should have done better on a counter attack but a heavy touch from Jacob Ramsey saw Ederson make a save.

    Aston Villa 0-1 Man City

This is a great spot for Manchester City. Make sure you test the goalkeeper... What a free-kick. He hits it side-footed, it just dips back. No goalkeeper is getting close to that. So close from Kevin de Bruyne.
