Tom Davies hitting the post is the closest either side has come to scoring in this first half. It was a chance off a rebound from Neal Maupay, who has started very well on his Everton debut.

Oof. Darwin Nunez has an awkward moment as he is shoved into the corner flag by Nathan Patterson. He's lucky the stick is bendable or it could have caused a bit of damage to a rather sensitive area.

Whatever the perceived notions of bias in favour of Liverpool, Anthony Gordon's just got away with two deliberate fouls in quick succession and no yellow card. We're all so myopic as football fans, aren't we?

The temperature is rising inside Goodison Park and referee Anthony Taylor is feeling the heat. Everton fans feel Liverpool left-back Konstantinos Tsimikas has been lucky to escape without a yellow card while the Greek was unhappy with Anthony Gordon's challenge on him.

Usual feisty fare. Not much quality so far.

Closest we have come! And a big let-off for Liverpool!

Joe Gomez is so clumsy with his clearance and allows Neal Maupay to stick in a boot to tackle Virgil van Dijk. The ball falls to Tom Davies, who pokes a shot against the inside of the post.

We've had 30 minutes of goalless football at Goodison.

Only a couple of easy saves made by the two keepers.

Anthony Gordon tries to find Demarai Gray with a cross whipped to the back post. He over-hits it, though, and the ball flies out for a goal-kick.

It's feisty, but there's precious little quality.

Joe Gomez underlines this by belting a cross-field pass straight out of play.

    Oh, almost!

Kostas Tsimikas' free-kick deflects towards Luis Diaz in the box but he can't get a touch to trouble Jordan Pickford. The Everton keeper gathers.

Demarai Gray is the latest Everton player to go to ground, near the Liverpool box.

Anthony Taylor waves play on, and with good reason. It is a dive. No booking for Gray, though.

Moments later, Liverpool have a free-kick in the Everton half after Tsimikas is caught by Gordon.

    This is getting very tasty.

Yet more proof that the officials are terrified to give anything against Liverpool. How is Diaz not even getting booked for swinging an elbow into the back of someone off the ball right in the refs face. Farcical.

    Callum, London

First time in a while the Liverpool bench has looked stronger. Nice to have a few potential game changers available as a plan B.

Kostas Tsimikas must be flirting with a yellow card.

His latest foul is a trip on Anthony Gordon near halfway.

    Save!

Everton's first corner of the game is half cleared but only to Anthony Gordon, who curls a low shot on target but too close to Alisson, who saves.#

Liverpool try to break quickly, but Darwin Nunez can't find a team-mate.

Richard Browne: Not loving this modern day English diver (Gordon/Grealish). Who is coaching this nonsense?

Jay Jones: I was expecting Liverpool to dominate…but good to see Everton willing to match Liverpool’s energy. Good game thus far.

Sulaimon Adelekan: Great to see that a coach has finally unlocked the potential of Alex Iwobi. Kudos to Frank Lampard.

This one is an infringement by Tsimikas.

Howls of "handball" as Tom Davies' pull back strikes Kostas Tsimikas in the Liverpool box. Hit his back, though. The referee is in just the right place to make the correct call.

The first flashpoint of the match from Luis Diaz. He was being man-marked by Nathan Patterson. He managed to hold off the Everton defender but as he got the ball away he sort of threw his arm out. He didn't connect properly but the boos rang out from the Everton supporters. No bookings but the atmosphere is building very nicely.

    Chance for Liverpool!

Darwin Nunez arrives at the back stick to meet Trent Alexander-Arnold's deep cross but he heads just over under pressure.

Should probably have hit the target despite the presence of the Everton defender.

Two chances to break, both come to nothing.

Demarai Gray is halted at one end and then Luis Diaz's poor pass to Mo Salah denies the visitors on the counter.
