    FT: Chelsea 2-1 West Ham

    Chelsea

Chelsea goalscorer Ben Chilwell, speaking to Sky Sports: "The last 20 or 30 minutes were a lot of different emotions! Just happy to get the win.

"I have had to be patient, bide my time and make sure I am training hard to make sure I can come in and make an impact."

On Maxwel Cornet's disallowed goal: "I went over to look at the VAR screen and from my point of view it was a foul - we put ourselves in that position and should have done, it's that bit of luck we got today."

What a horrific ref decision in the Chelsea match. Accidental contact with Mendy, who rolls around like he's been shot and it didn't affect what happened after. Terrible refs and VAR is pointless when they make decisions like this.

    Adam, Shropshire

Starting to get fed up with VAR. Two perfectly good goals ruled out today - one for Newcastle, one for West Ham. Two things are frustrating - firstly that the VAR officials can make such bad calls, and secondly that the referee doesn't seem to have any power to disagree with them and stick with their original decision once they've gone to the monitor. VAR was never supposed to be the final say except for offsides, it was supposed to aid referees in making the right call... but it seems like refs are too scared to go against VAR advice and back their original decisions. Farcical.

    Victor Chatfield, London

VAR is killing the game of football. Never known so many disallowed goals in one afternoon. Absolutely shocking decisions in the majority of cases.

  4. Can ‘concerned’ Gerrard lift the Villa Park mood?published at 17:05 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

If Aston Villa lose today they will have collected their lowest ever Premier League points tally after six matches and will have lost five of their first six top-flight games for the first time since 1986 and only the third time in their history.

And the Villa fans are starting to get restless as they booed the team after their 1-0 loss against West Ham last week before a 2-1 defeat by Arsenal left them 19th in the table.

Asked if he was worried for his managerial future, Gerrard, only appointed in November with the club 16th and two points above the relegation zone, said: "Of course I do. I'm honest and critical of myself and will do my job the best I can, step forward and take responsibility.

"But if I stood here and said I wasn't concerned you'd look at me as if I was from a different planet."

It's all different from the optimism of March when a 3-0 win over Leeds, Villa's third successive win, left Gerrard's side ninth and eyeing up a late push for European football.

However, they have only won three of 16 games since, ended last season 14th and made a horrible start to this one. A home win over the champions would be a great way to get back on track and change the mood at Villa Park.

  5. 'We have to be clinical'published at 17:03 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    FT: Newcastle 0-0 Crystal Palace

    Newcastle United

Newcastle midfielder Joe Willock: "We had loads of chances and we have to put them away. We have to be clinical when you have a team by the scruff of the neck.

"I believe it should have been a goal [which was disallowed]. The ball came across and I thought I got pushed in the back. Very disappointing.

"We have to just focus on what we can control. We have a brilliant team and a manager. We have to look ahead to the next game. We have to stay positive. It was good performance."

Var is meant to take away human error, all I've seen it do today is amplify it. Ridiculous for Newcastle, Ridiculous for West Ham. Use it better or bin it off because this is rubbish.

It's not VAR - let me get this correct. It's not VAR, VAR just records the TV footage, it's the people who are running VAR. It's those human beings who are making the decisions. It's the referees stuck in that office, wherever they are, making the decisions.

Dave: Shocking decision. No way Mendy was getting near that, so he just stayed down. Ref bottles it in front of home crowd.

Jaleel: That was not right VAR. Mendy and Chelsea bottled the ball and the referee joined in bottling his original decision.

Zahi: No way that is a foul on Mendy. Chelsea got away with one. David Moyes will be fuming…and rightly so.

    This bonkers game keeps delivering.

Forest pile forward in search of a leveller but after Neto flaps at a delivery, Taiwo Awoniyi can only turn and slice a shot high and wide in the box.

    Chelsea 2-1 West Ham

    Tony Pulis
Former Stoke manager on BBC Radio 5 Live

He's [Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy] parried the ball out and it is Jarrod Bowen's momentum that takes him into the goalkeeper. It is a game of challenges. That's extraordinary. It's his laces that catch the lad not his studs. That's ridiculous.
