Josh Hammond: If this stays 0-0 I will eat the cardboard box that my pizza just arrived in.

  8. Visitors creating the chancespublished at 17:49 British Summer Time 3 September 2022

    Aston Villa 0-0 Man City

    Michael Emons

Aston Villa are struggling to cope with Manchester City's movement, creativity, one-touch passing and class so far.

The visitors should have gone ahead after only four minutes when a beautiful move involving Erling Haaland, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan created a chance for Kyle Walker but the England defender, with only Emiliano Martinez to beat, lashed his shot wildly into the Holte End.

Kevin de Bruyne has fired just wide from the edge of the box and Gundogan just failed to connect with De Bruyne's excellent cross from the flank.

Villa hanging on a bit, but crucially it's still 0-0.

Can you notice the difference in Man City today? It's a little bit quicker, a little bit more direct on the switches in play because they are narrow. Aston Villa's set-up is making Manchester City change, but they are giving them a little bit too much room.

So close. Kevin de Bruyne pings in a lovely deep cross from the right wing and Ilkay Gundogan races in behind the defence but the ball just skims past his outstretched foot.

It was an amazing strike, City play through the midfield. Kevin de Bruyne hits it so well, but just pulls it across. A great chance.

    It's 18-82% possession so far.

And City have their second chance but Kevin de Bruyne shoots wide from 25 yards. No Villa players closed him down there. Risky business.

City are just probing and seeing most of the ball as you'd expect. A long ball is just beyond Ilkay Gundogan.

It was a great move, little round the corners. City's full-back has been able to go all the way. Kyle Walker steadies himself, he goes near post and slices it behind the goal, he will be disappointed with that.

A beauitful passing move by Manchester City.

Ilkay Gundogan plays a through ball to Kyle Walker, who has time and space... and then hammers a shot high and wide.

Erling Haaland was waiting for the ball six yards out...

It's a great atmosphere at Villa Park as Ollie Watkins nearly gets his head on a Lucas Digne cross inside the opening seconds.

It's a big evening for Villa boss Steven Gerrard, who wrote in the matchday programme: "Although the result went against us at Arsenal on Wednesday, we were pleased with the application of the players and how hard they worked was a real positive.

"We get ourselves back into the game and find ourselves in a good place then shoot ourselves in the foot by conceding a poor goal.

"We face another stiff test in the form of Manchester City. Everyone knows they are a world class side led by a top coach who have started this season on fire.

"But today is an opportunity for us to surprise the football world and get a result which we know can only happen if our attitude, application and execution are all spot on."
