It has been business as usual for Manchester City, though they are sat in second behind Arsenal in the table.

They can close that gap to one point again with victory over United today.

Manchester United have four wins from their first six games, putting them in sixth place.

Victory for Erik ten Hag's side would take them to within two points of City.

  2. Squad depth could play key rolepublished at 13:22 British Summer Time 2 October 2022

This isn't a derby about best XIs. This derby could come down to squad depth and who can handle it better.

Ruben Dias carries a stong reputation, but a man growing quickly and favourably in popularity among Blues’ supporters is Manuel Akanji.

He's been impressive in the Champions League and the Premier League, and could prove pivotal at the back.

For United, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are yet to lose in the league as a partnership.

The match-ups will be fascinating to watch at both ends of the pitch.

Ismail: Without a DM again? Any counter-attack from Fernandez to Anthony, Rashford is a goal. Guardiola will learn a lesson.

Harrison: I don't see how Manchester United back four can cope with the Targaryen dragon in the form of Haaland.

    Peter Schmeichel
Former Manchester City and Manchester United goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

Manchester United need someone who can take leadership at the club and be visually in charge. So the players know this guy is deciding everything. What I really like from the short period of time that Erik ten Hag has been at the club is that he can deal with big players and big egos. I think previous managers have been troubled by that. As much as I like Cristiano Ronaldo, he's put him on the bench for the benefit of the team, that's what he said and that's leadership. That's what you want from your manager and that will give you the respect of the players.

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola tells Sky Sports: "They know it. It is special for both clubs. We try to perform well, hopefully the emotion is there and we try to win."

On the absence of Rodri in the squad: "It is an injury. Yesterday in the training session he felt something. It was a little more than a niggle in his leg so we did not want to take the risk. It is an important role but one of the success the biggest clubs have is that excuses don't exist. Nobody is second in the locker room."

It is almost a month since Leeds United were in action - and they've had a long time to reflect on a 5-2 hammering at Brentford last time out way back on 3 September.

Boss Jesse Marsch was sent off for complaining too much when his side weren't given a penalty when 3-1 down and will finally serve his one-game suspension today after scheduled matches against Nottingham Forest and Manchester United were postponed.

On Friday, Marsch tried to talk up the positives of having to watch from the stands and not the dug-out, saying: "I actually like the vantage point of being up high.

"I think it allows you to see the match better. I've often considered actually managing or coaching from that position, and then coming in at half-time and things like that."

Leeds, without a win in three, are 13th, one point and one place above Aston Villa, who beat Southampton 1-0 on 16 September after coming from behind to draw 1-1 with reigning champions Manchester City the previous game.

“We know we're going into a really hostile environment, so the challenge is big,” said Villa manager Steven Gerrard. "It's going to be a tough game, but we're in a good place ourselves on the back of a couple of positive results.

“We want to go there with confidence and belief, be really tough to beat and we've got enough quality in our team to hurt Leeds.”

Everton and England midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

The big two words for Manchester City is Champions League. We can talk about legacy and delving into how good of a brilliant coach Pep Guardiola is but that is a big gap. The club do a good job of deflecting the fact that they're not too concerned about the Champions League.

But I think where City are at and who Pep Guardiola is, deep down the Champions League is the one they want. They've probably got the best chance of winning it now with the identified number nine in Erling Haaland and the impact that he's already had on the team. He's only going to get better.

How that translates into European football remains to be seen. He's done it before with Borussia Dortmund, I'm sure he'll do it here as well but will that take Man City into the final and then eventual winners? We'll see. But I can't see Guardiola going anywhere until he's got his hands on that one.

Man City v Man Utd (14:00 BST)

Pep Guardiola makes three changes to the Manchester City side who beat Wolves in the Premier League last month.

John Stones misses out with injury so in comes Nathan Ake, while Kyle Walker replaces Ruben Dias.

Rodri is not in the squad so Ilkay Gundogan starts.

Man City XI: Ederson, Walker, Ake, Cancelo, Gundogan, Haaland, Grealish, De Bruyne, Silva, Akanji, Foden.

Subs: Ortega, Carson, Dias, Laporte, Alvarez, Gomez, Mahrez, Palmer, Lewis.

Erik ten Hag makes just one change to the Manchester United team who beat Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League in their last outing.

Diogo Dalot comes in for Cristiano Ronaldo, who has to settle for a place on the bench.

Marcus Rashford starts despite injury concerns. Anthony Martial is fit enough to be named among the substitutes.

Man Utd XI: De Gea, Martinez, Fernandes, Rashford, Malacia, Eriksen, Varane, Dalot, Antony, Sancho, McTominay.

Subs: Heaton, Lindelof, Ronaldo, Martial, Fred, Casemiro, Shaw, Pellistri, Elanga.

Manchester United's Erik ten Hag and Marcus Rashford won the Premier League's manager and player of the month awards for September.

Ten Hag has lead United to four consecutive league wins.

Victories against Liverpool and Southampton in August preceded wins over Leicester and Arsenal this month.

Rashford scored twice against Arsenal to fuel United's rally.

Manchester United's midfield has played a big part in the recent resurgence by Erik ten Hag's side - but it is absolutely crucial he gets that area right today.

Ten Hag has to decide whether he keeps both Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes in there against Manchester City, or chooses a more defensive-minded set-up and goes with two proper holding players this time.

With a player as good as Casemiro waiting in the wings for his first league start, the temptation must be to partner him with Scott McTominay to give extra protection to his defence.

But if Ten Hag does that and leaves one of his more creative players out, and United lose, he will be asked why he changed a winning team and didn't go for it more.

Can Manchester United get up to the intensity required to perform and win in a derby? They're in a better place than they were seven or eight weeks ago but now the motivation needs to be long-term. They need to instil the manager's plans, his new ideas, his methods and also stick to the values of the club.

  20. 'City by far best team in Manchester'published at 12:49 British Summer Time 2 October 2022

Man City v Man Utd (14:00 BST)

For all the positivity about Manchester United's progress under Erik ten Hag, they are playing Manchester City - who are the best team in the country and by far the best team in Manchester.

We saw Arsenal created chances against United in their last league game, but failed to take them.

If City play anywhere near as well as they can do, they will do the same - and they won't miss.

United could cause them problems on the counter, but a more likely scenario is that they are going to get pumped.

    Prediction: 4-1
